Sx1?
Hi there - thinking about getting a new phone, and was just about decided on the Nokia 6230, then saw the Siemens SX1. Does anyone have any experience with this phone, and is it decent? Most important thing for me is SMS, MP3 playback with memory card.

Total AGREE ! SX1 rocks (specs) SendoX rocks (form factor) I'd personally go for Siemens. A reliable brand is important.

The SX1 looks great...but I don't know...I heard there are some serious problems with it, like too slow and MMC reading is a hastle. If those aren't true, then I'd go for it

*Apparently* the sx1 has a very slow UI. However I cannot back this up as I have never used one. My opinion, wait for the 6630. Its not too long. Only a few months! ![]()

I've had my SX-1 for less than a week, and the phone is simply stellar. I can't say enough good things about it. The memory card feature is fantastic. I bought a 512 meg card last night but I'll be returning it as I found a 1GB card on ebay that will work. 1 Gig in this thing, incredible! Mp3 playback sounds very good, but there isn't a way of tweaking the sound (bass and treble) that I've found so far. The picture quality on the camera is so-so, but hey, it's incredible that it has a camera with zoom that does video as well. Surprising features that I didn't know about before buying it like the hands-free speakerphone are really cool as well.
I really enjoy the FM radio when I'm sitting at my desk at work, even if the reception is so-so. As for the UI being slow, I'd argue that it's very quick. Every once in a while there's a slowdown when you're running multiple apps (yes, you can run multiple things at once. Talk on the phone and play games, listen to the radio and browse files on the memory card with the file manager, etc). It has a task manager like a pc does where you can view what is running. There is 16 meg of RAM and it seems very capable of keeping up with things. There is a slight delay when starting up the camera app, but I think it acceptible. If you "heard" that the UI is slow, I'd say that you should see an SX-1 in person and play with it for a while before rendering an opinion. Take my old Sony/Ericsson T68i ... now THAT was a slow-ass UI. Total junk. The SX-1 is in another universe in terms of features, look, feel, and slickness. The number arranagement is a bit awkward, but a lot of times I dial a number from the contacts list and you can set up speed dial options on the phone as well. I think it's a non-issue considering how much other stuff this phone does. Anyone who is dialing all their numbers by hand in a phone of this caliber isn't using it to it's maximum potential, agreed? I'll list a few complaints just so this doesn't sound like a review by some Siemens fanatic that will say nothing wrong about it. Every once in a while there's a slight pause when switching between apps, but nothing has crashed. It just pauses for a second. I wouldn't call this a slow UI, as it's less than a second. The joystick is a bit hard to push at times especially when your hand gets sweaty playing one of the great games you can get for this phone. It needs to stick up a bit more and be slightly easier to push. And I wish there was a way to make the backlit display stay on longer. And I wish the web browsing had some way to load standard web pages and not just the smaller, lite versions that are text based. It probably wouldn't look right on the SX-1 screen anyway as it's not big enough to support that. I hear there are some 3rd party app web browsers that might work so I may try one. As for my version, the SX-1 McLaren, the phone looks simply stunning in black and you can be fairly sure you'll never run into another person with the same phone, even if you had a standard SX-1. Everyone I've shown is amazed by it, which of course doesn't say that much considering how bad a lot of the phones are that people have here in the United States. Old Nokias that are big and clunky with only a few, mono ringtones and black and white screens, etc. If someone has a color screen phone, that's still rare here in the US. The SX-1 looks like something that I went into the future to buy and brought back to 2004. I'd buy one again in a heartbeat. How many phones out there have a 65K color display, FM radio, mp3 player, Java apps, an OS as slick as the Symbian, Bluetooth, IR, a camera, and support for a separate memory card? Say it with me now .... SX-1. Here are some pictures of my phone next to the old T68i I used to have .more pictures here: link to more pictures of my SX-1 Adam Wilson Chicago, USA |

i so love the mclaren version, and the best part is is that its still very cheap! like 400US or something right?.. shouldve bought it but i thought that since its a collaboration wiht mclaren it had to be expensive. but it isnt. i just wish they fixed the keypad but hell, with that kind of black colour id easily forgive not fixing the keypad...hmm. maybe ill get it anyway! i mean for a device that dominates symbian market now its pretty darn cheap. just a few questions about the sx1
1. does it support bluejacking? 2. what kind of headset port is it? 2.5mm or 3.5mm or custom siemens one? 3. is the camera pics better then standard sx1? i know theyre both vga but like p900 is to p910, p910 cam is better. ive seen pics. 4.does it have any new apps or software or games or anything besides just the Mclaren edition name add on and black colour compared to standard sx1? thanks alot bud!

Before you buy the SX1 take a good look at the Sendo X.
It is smaller, has much better battery life, has a lot more built in memory, takes SD cards and MMC cards up to 1GB, and has a normal key pad layout. You can see it here. http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/52923/art/sendo/x.html Last edited by xerxes : 09-18-2004 at 09:24 AM. |

Cdover, if you want to be picky about the semantics, yes you didn't offer an opinion without having seen the phone. You related a non-firsthand experience with it, which is also known as "heresay". My point is you should try out the phone yourself, before repeating what others "supposedly" said about the UI.
I don't know if it supports "bluejacking". The headset port is a Siemens proprietary thing, i.e. it only uses the one port which is also for connecting the USB cable, or the charger. There is not a standard headphone jack. The camera photo quality is o.k. Still nothing compared to a real digital camera, but it's adequate. Yes, the McLaren version comes pre-loaded with some McLaren stuff. There's a whole menu folder called McLaren with videos, pictures, and when the phone boots and shuts down, there are McLaren graphics that are displayed letting you know it's the real Siemens McLaren SX-1 phone. It also has a McLaren F1 car ringtone which is very cool. I think the phone is worth the premium over a standard SX-1 because I like F1 and the McLaren team. Even if you changed the cover plates on the SX-1 to the black ones, it'll never have the "limited edition" written on there as the McLaren does. And trying to locate all the McLaren specific things on my SX-1 to load on a standard SX-1 would be a waste of time. With shipping to the United States, I paid $530 for mine. You can get them for around $450+ right now on ebay. If you want the person's ebay id that I bought mine from, I can tell you. I'd recommend her highly. Refering to the memory card, I've already had a 512MB MMC stick in there, which I returned after I found a 1GB one on ebay from the same brand. That card is on the way which will work I'm sure in the SX-1. People have said that the slot and pins actually are set up to support SD, but it is believed to be a firmware limitation that the SX-1 does not recognize the card. Perhaps they will add this in a future firmware release? Finally, I'm not familiar with the Sendo brand the way I am with Siemens. The Siemens brand was one that I felt comfortable spending $500 to buy a phone from. Adam Wilson Chicago, USA Siemens SX-1 McLaren |
