N-Gage+256MB MMC?

I realy want to know if the n-gage suppurts 256MB MMC cards
i know it doesn't say so in n-gage.com but i want to hear it from someone who tried it

Hi,

I would definitely not advise anybody to use a 256MB MMC on the Nokia N-Gage, or any other phone that uses the 104 MHz ARM9 Processor (3650, 3660, 7600 and 6600). They already have some difficulty reading in the 128MB MMC Cards. With the current software on the phones I would definitely not advise anybody to use cards higher then 128MB, actually 64MB cards would be recommended.

Officially Nokia does support MMC cards up to 128MB for these series 60 phones, 256MB is NOT SUPPORTED (for the above mentioned reasons).

Off course you can try to use the 256MB MMC, but the problem is that you might crash the system in the process.

If it detects the card correctly then you can use the card, but the processor will be working overtime to read and process the card-script.... meaning that there's a high possibility that I'll crash.

notice that the 3300 has a weaker CPU (i think) and the 3650 has the 104MHz CPU to.
How do they suppurt the 512(!) MB card?

There is no Nokia device that support the 512MB cards, seeing that they are not officially from Nokia. Plus the fact that no Nokia CPU could read in these cards properly. If it works then good luck to you,... but 512MB are NOT supported (no mather what Nokia phone you use). Nokia supports cards up to 128MB, other cards higher then 128MB are not official Nokia cards, so when it would crash the system, you're on your own.
This is not dependend on the CPU alone, the MMC-reader in the phone has some say in this as well. However, when using 256MB or 512MB cards Nokia does not give support, no matter what Nokia device is used.

Will this 'flaw' occur in all the new upcoming Nokias? The 6230 in particular.

So 128MB flash card is the recommended size for all current and future phones and 256MB+ will cause the phone to crash? Would the phone operate normally after a reboot after it crashes or will it be permanently damaged?

I'm afraid to say that for the 6230 the same rules apply.
Maximum 128MB MMC, that is the limit (or recommended size at least). If you would use a 256MB card, there is a definite risk that the system would crash. This does not mean that it automatically would permanently damage the phone. In most of the cases that I have dealt with it does not permanently damage the phone, it would crash (and sometimes reboot automatically) until the card was removed.

In some cases however the system is permanently damaged, almost all of these cases (although still few) are with 512MB cards.
After this, it's off to the Service Point for a software reflush, that always does the trick.

There are some upcoming models that would support the 256MB card. Or could at least work with it without crashing. Seeing that Nokia does not have an official 256MB cards of it's own, Nokia will always recommend 128MB max, until it has a 256MB of its own. But you can be sure that Nokia will release a 256MB soon, around the time that curtain upcoming models would be released. Most of the upcoming models unfortunately still need to live with these current "limitations".

A phone re-flash will certainly cost money am I correct or will Nokia do it for free?

Also, have there been any incidents of a 256MB card working perfectly fine on Nokias? If so, what brand/make/type is it? Or does the probability of working all just luck?

Since Nokia is offering phones that do allot more than hold ringtones and wallapaer - like Mp3 and voice recording, photos, etc, it migh be a good idea to upgrade the current reader/CPU to accomodate the larger cards. If the upcoming 7700 has this limitation - I really dont see the point in having all the functionality with all the limitations.

A phone re-flash might cost money, dependent if your phone is still under warranty (one year, starting from purchase date). It's always best to contact the service point to make an appointment and ask for the details there.

There is not one brand of 256MB cards that always works, there always could be some problems. So, unfortunately I don't have a brand name for you that "definitely will work".

What the 7700 is concerned, you can sure that by the time this phone is on the market, Nokia will have release a 256MB card and possibly even a higher-capacity card. And more importantly that the CPU of this phone will be able to run these cards without any problem. Seeing that the CPU is of a higher class.

Right to clarify, I have an N-Gage and 2 3300s and have seen 256mb MMCs running just fine in them. They are build by Kingmax. I suspect the reason for the limit on MMCs is that the MMC spec states they were only supposed to be up to 64mb in size, then 128mb. 256mb is out of spec.

My N-Gage has never crashed nor have the 3300s. I experienced a bit of strange behaviour where some icons disappeared but I think this is because of the way I transferred the files across, as properly installed apps don't do this.

So I have tried, tested and am permanently using a KINGMAX 256mb MMC card in my N-Gage - so I would recommend you go ahead with it, as the N-Gage really benefits from the large memory space.

I have never heard of a 256/512mb MMC card crashing the Symbian OS, I may just have not looked hard enough but if it were to crash personally, I wouldn't care that much. I reckon these people must've done something really weird with them. Lots of sellers on Ebay sell 256/512mb MMC cards guaranteed compatible with 3650, 6600 and N-Gage.

By the way, I used two different 256mb MMC cards by Kingmax, both were fine. They cost about £50 brand new and come with 5yrs warranty.
