6800 with RIM delayed

I just received word from one of the US Nokia reps that the version of the 6800 with support for RIM's Blackberry email system will be delayed due to the ongoing lawsuits that RIM is dealing with.

Does the carrier have to support this feature? When it comes out that is... As well, will this be possible to put this on any series 40 phone with built in email (like the 6220 for example).

I have no idea how it would work, but I imagine the same way as the current RIM GSM/GPRS devices that are on T-Mobile do.

There are no plans for putting the RIM tech in any other phones currently. And considering the neverending string of suits against and from RIM, I wouldn't be surprised if Nokia just lets this quietly die.

then why does the 6820 have it?

If that's the case, I hope they have one hell of a return policy because THAT'S what I bought it for!!!!

Well, you are kinda replying to an old post.

That was Nokia's official word at the time I posted that.

In any event, who is selling 6820s now? I certainly haven't seen them anywhere.

oops. See what happens when you use the SEARCH function!

I have been pretty frustrated since Nokia is dodging the subject. I sent three emails to their support (since their phone support was a HUGE time waster). I specifically asked about the X-UIDL header issue and the RIM (both which were to be fixed with an upcoming FW update. I bought this thing in July.

Well, acccording to Ron, the Email specialist,

"Dear McHale

Thank you for e-mailing Nokia's Contact Center.

We apologize if no one has addressed the issues concerning Blackberry support for your Nokia 6800 phone.

Nokia gladly accepts returns within 30 days of your purchase. Your local Nokia dealer cannot accept returns for items purchased at nokia.com/us."

Boy did *THAT* answer my questions. No wonder Symbian is going the way of the dodo. Thank God (and Microsoft) that the MS Smartphones are finally out and in the US. The 6800 is the worst phone I've ever had. The sound quality is so distorted I can't decipher what people are saying at times. Since I worked for Cingular when I got it, I tested 10 other units and they were all the same. JUNK JUNK JUNK (and *WAY* overpriced)

-Mc

p.s. I saw the 6820 from a local Nokia rep. I prefer the 6800 keyboard because the 6820 has them TOO close to be quickly functional. I prefer the 6340i over the 6800 and it has taught me to love T9. When my MS Smartphone comes in, I'll be ready. Besides, I have found that T9 is faster than the keyboard most of the time...

I'd have to say the problem was Cingular then. I loved the 6800 and had no reception or audio problems at all on T-Mobile.

hmmmm... interesting. The audio is REALLY distorted. So much that I don't use the phone at all and went back to my 6340i (which has no audio problems). I'm not kidding, I tested a slew of 'em so I could swap it out. Now I'm going to have to find someone who ISN'T on Cingular so I can test it. Reception was good though.

That mail problem drives me nuts though. If I could do pop3 with it (X-UIDL header issue) and the audio wasn't distorted, I'd be extremely happy with it.

Thanks for the info. I now have some hope...

Yeah, they still have yet to offer a solution for the mail problem. It better not be the same way in the 6820 or I'm gonna be pissed.

quick question for you. If you still have the 6800 that is...

When I have everything set up for pop, I get the header errors and I can't download email. But if I switch the incoming mail type to IMAP and leave all other settings alone, I am able to download just fine. My server also identifies the email as being read. Since sending email using the phone isn't a problem, I haven't had too many problems with it. Have you tried it?

I did slap a T-Mobile SIM in my phone but it sounded the same. Nokia says to send it in and they will check it. But I'm waiting for a new FW (with all the new bells and whistles) before I do that.

I am quite disappointed in the lack of support and updates for this phone. I love the keyboard design and if everything worked as expected, I'd fall asleep every night with a smile on my face.

I don't have IMAP email access, so no, I haven't tried it.

I don't have the 6800 any more anyway.

no no no.. I don't have IMAP access either, only pop3. I have all my settings the correct pop3 settings. The only change I made is on the phone. There is a setting for Incoming Mail Type. The choices are pop3 and IMAP. I just changed it to IMAP and it brings it all in. The type of Mail Server is still set at pop3. It still uses the POP3 authentication.

If you want, I can give you a complete list of the settings and what I have. It may help some other frustrated 6800 owners out there.

Hell, I could care less about RIM support anyway. I was told a while ago (July) by the Chicago Nokia rep that they would soon release a new JAVA Email version to fix this problem that we could just download and install. Of course, they didn't. Hell, there hasn't been a FW upgrade since the day it came out. I imagine they are putting a lot of effort into the Symbian 60 effort. MS based smart phones are soon to be a threat.

Yes, I'm very familiar with those lawsuits. I work for Siemens doing work for Metlife up here in Clarks Summit, PA and I support and deploy Blackberries to/for Metlife employees. I have had many people asking me about that, but I don't think we'll see it too soon at Metlife. It would be nice...
