Camera: VGA vs. Megapixel
I know this souns like a dumb question, but what's the diffrence between the two?
Isn't it, it all matters with the actual size of the camera screen? The bigger the screen the better the shots whether or not it's VGA or a megapixel camera, right? |

VGA is 640x480.. or basically .5 MP.
Also some camera's (not necessarily cellcams) are inerpolated reoslutions, (pixel doubleing) which is essentially taking the image captured, and before rendering it through its algorithm, is doubled through some software to make it the larger resolution - but its not true 1mp or whatever spec they claim - AND, its usually pointed out in the specification if its interploated ot not. There is also 1mp, 1,1. and 1.2 and 1.3 MP cameras out there I believe. Not a whole lot diff in pic quality - it just depend son what CCD, or CMOS variant the manu's put in there. IM pretty sure there is somewhere on this forum the exact pixel count for the 1mp and above I mentioned. ![]() |

And then what is QVGA, CIF, QCIF etc...? Can you give the whole line up? are there more and how is a mega pixel camera called? SVGA? XSVGA?

I think that for 1.3Megapixels the resolution is 1280 X 960.
Or something like that.. QVGA is 320 X 240 (Quarter VGA) CIF is 352 X 288 (Common Intermediate Format) QCIF is 176 X 144 (Quarter Common Intermediate Format) Hope it helps! Last edited by justop26 : 04-08-2004 at 11:14 AM. |

Thank juststop
good job with the numbers! Also - QCIF is the resolution that MMS uses to send photos... it has to be that res to support MMS transfer from what I understand... even though no one asked this.... I figured I would tell anyway :-D haw haw haw haw |

So basically, for viewing purposes, VGA and megapixel cams are pretty much the same as long as the phone has a big screen??
And megapixel will only matter if I'm going to print it? Coz isn't it, 2 or 3 megapixel is equivalent to 4R printing? |

It is always preferable to scale down an image from a higher resolution than to have one shot originally at that same resolution. Meaning: 1024x768 scaled down to 640x480 will be preferable to something shot at 640x480 to begin with. Then there is just the fact that the megapixel sensors are better, regardless of the resolution. The VGA (and smaller) sensors used in phones are garbage. The GX-20's VGA sensor is decent, but still can't comare with the megapixel sensors.

Ok
So why is the camera of the Nokia 7650 better than the SE T610? The 7650 has a bigger screen but only 4K color whereas the latter has a smaller screen but with 65K color. Isn't it for a phone with 65K, even camera shots should be better? Or does this only concern the menu icons and not camera shots? |

If the camera is crap, the best display in the world won't help. A bad photo is a bad photo.

Thanks for clearing that up
Lastly, why is the camera of the Nokia 6600 better than the SE P900? With the hefty price of the latter, I expected it to have the better camera shot. |

Obviously the price is due to the sum of the costs of *all* of the components, and the R&D/Marketing costs.
The P900 in general is more expensive to manufacture. And in my experience, I don't know that the 6600's camera is any better than the P900's. The 6600's focus is better, or at least more consistent, but the P900's color rendition is better.

But the camera image in a 6600 looks better than the P900. The P900 gives a blurry image while the 6600's image is much much clearer.

oh common..
some phones put more money to make ur view finder looked better thru the lens, some don't. but i still think afterall sony has a vga from the UX50, why not move it to the P900?, its jus that i'm murmuring about, i dun take pictures for bout 1 n a half months already, the P900 can't seem to display properly when something such as a few lines of text from the monitor or newspaper is hold up very near to act as if a zoom from the distance my eyes are from the texts. The T630 is better here when compared.
BUT, i do like the settings enabled in the P900 to do the frequency thing, the refresh rates can be set at 60 hz so tht when aiming at a monitor screen, one won't see the flickers dat u do on other cam phones.

What type of cam does the Nokia 3200 and the mca-25 have ? I have both and the pics from the mca25 seem to be more clear .
