new phone: SGH-D710

Hey all - being a long time fan of Samsung who recently switched to a Nokia 6600 because Samsung has YET to bring a bluetooth smartphone (running either Palm or Symbian OS), I found this very exciting! Check it out:

http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/4746.html

Here's hoping this one actually makes it to market ... it looks great!!

Enjoy.

Thanks for the heads up!

Was pretty bummed when they cancelled the D700 - a clamshell Symbian phone... that would have been cool, but the D710 looks even better and I rate Samsung's designs (shame about their UIs and features to date). I would have an X700 but I have a silly thing that Panasonic clamshells open too far back and hence look stupid...

But then the 7700 on that same page looks pretty tasty too...

It doesn't mention it, but in fact, the D700 was set to have Bluetooth so I see no reason why this shouldn't.

Also another point to note is the placement of the T9/texting buttons - it's the same as Nokias, which in my book is a very good thing! (0 - space, * - change word, etc.)

The phone looks like a cross between a N6600(top part) and a N7650(sliding design and silhouette...well somewhat)

Yeah, I have to say that all in all I'm pretty excited about this phone.

Sadly, after many a Google search I still haven't found much more info on it. I'm very happy with my N6600, but the idea of the sliding design and smaller bulge in my pocket (I know, I know ... first time you heard a guy say that) offered by the Samsung is very tempting to me.

...fingers still crossed that it makes it to market ASAP.

Has anyone else noticed the photo says 'Cameras' on the display? Is there more than one?

Anyway, does anyone have a release date for the phone? Not that I trust release dates, they seem to be more just 'paper' releases to try and get more coverage and interest in a product. I can never remember when someone released a phone on time...

What's the bets they'll cancel this phone too? It's N-Gage for me, for the meanwhile (unless someone can produce something better soon).

DEViANT - somewhere in the back of my head I want to say that I read that it was due Q4 of 2004. I've tried to find the source of that info and have not been able to do so. But, as you said ... who can trust expected release dates. I for one don't consider a phone on the market until there's some place where I can enter a credit card number and get charged too much for it, you know?!

I don't know if you've noticed, but the 7610 is the same way. In the new Series 60 devices, the Camera and Video Rec are being put into one application.

If this makes it to the market, and nothing else is announced, this is definetely my next phone. Shame about the Pana X700, if only it had a 1MP Camera instead of VGA that would be my model of choice.

I may be wrong but I think the D710 is due for release in Q2 2004.

maaaan, i love this phone but duno why samsung is so adamant about the antenna, it ruins the shape, i reckon if it didnt have it, design wise and only design wise itd be a competitor for the SL55. but overall itll probably level up nicely against, other phones released at the same time

No bluetooth that stinks. 7610 is much better apart from the screen but 65k is good enough. the movie diredtor and all the stuff you get on the 7610 is so much better than the D710.

There's a brief writeup of each of the new Samsungs - over a dozen - at Mobile Gazette

The new Samsung range looks pretty good to me. Some real innovation like the X910 which is a slightly strange hybrid between a phone and digital camcorder, the rather nice P730 camera phone and the interesting SGH-i500. There's some more mundane phones too, but that's one heck of a product range, and they manage to cover Symbian, Windows and PalmOS.

One of the things I don't like is the naming conventions.. take the i500 for example, there are two distinct versions, the GSM SGH-i500 and the PCS SPH-i500 which are over a year apart in technological terms. It can get awfully confusing.

If you're looking for the natural successor to the SL55, then have a look at the SGH-E800, only 86 grams and a similar sliding arrangement.

And don't forget they've got the almost-normal-looking 3G phone, the z105 too.

Oh yeah, the D710. Looks pretty good, but maybe it's not quite going to knock the P900 off the #1 spot

Dynamoo, thanks for the heads up on this. These looks really cool and make things look definitely exciting in the next few months - here's hoping Nokia hit back with some killer phones as well!

Did anyone else notice the lack of Bluetooth on the D710 (according to that site)? That's going to make for a pretty crappy Symbian smartphone but I can manage just so long as it has IR and USB and it looks nice (Samsungs always do). Do they have something against Bluetooth?

The X900 looks kind of funky, stereo ringtones and MP3s! It's very E700-style which is a good thing as that was a nice looking phone (though it was lacking in Java gaming and data synchronisation). But am definitely on the lookout for the D710.

Bluetooth is amust nowadays on smart and all high end phones. I love the look of all samsungs but the lack of bluetooth repels me from them. 7610 kicks the crap out of D710. Anyday.
