my second 3650 - dead - workaround?

This morning I pulled my 3650 out of my pocket, and noticed it was turned off. Fearing the worse, I tried to power it up. The screen turned white... then flickered and died.

This is the second 3650 to do this to me. My first phone had a similar occurence, except that when I turned it on, it would try to boot up about four times before it gave up.

Is there a way to clear/reset the phone in this state? Besides taking it in for a factory flash, that is. My best option right now is to use my AT&T warranty to get a refurbished replacement.

(If only those 3rd-quarter models were available, darn it!)

discovery: If I boot the phone without the SIM card, it seems to do a little better, and I get an error message to insert the SIM. Is there a "safe" mode (w/out 3rd-party software, obviously) I can start in, that would let me either reformat the phone or use PC Suite to restore a backup state?

fixed! - but how?!

I somehow fixed my phone. But I don't know why it worked.

I remember reading about some rumored "safe mode" but nobody ever seemed to know what exactly is was.

I was able to start the phone with the memory card removed and the pencil key held down during boot-up. The phone finally started normally, and prompted me for date and time.

I turned it off, replaced the MMC and turned it on... worked perfectly.

Now who knows why that worked?

Odd. I wonder if that is just something like a hard reset, where normally it is always running (even when "off").
