Nice review.. a couple of questions?

- what media center is that controlling?
- GPS maps are free..? Is that sync'd with a BT gps receiver?
- Can you use your phone as a BT modem?

Audio transcript from the footage.
Quote:
Basically, you have a home network, 802.11g and a router down below. It's networked into the 1600 DVD player which is a network attached DVD player.

You have (points left) a media server so what this (N800) device does is find any media server connected to your server connected to your network and displays it, and this basically acts as the rendering engine and from the server and you can control it via UPnP.
Quote:
- GPS maps are free..?
GPS functionality will be available as an add on for the N800.

Not sure how the maps are going to work, but in N95, apparently the only thing with additional charge is the "turn by turn" navigation solution. But that is GPS already....
Quote:
Is that sync'd with a BT gps
You are correct
Quote:
- Can you use your phone as a BT modem?
Yup, see 6.2.2, I should have used that phrase

Nice work. Always good to have proper first hand reveiws. I know a few so called professionals that could learn from you (not MB staff of course).

lol, I couldn't hope to match MB style reviewing. Michael, Michelle, brad, Jin and sam all those other guys I've missed out have so much extra information to play around with (via past experience from numerous handset encounters/ownerships or just general super know how from being in that business)

But thank you for that.

Like I said in the internet tablet forum that I haven't had much experience of this platform or the 770 to make a large demanding improvement segment of flaws carried through from 770 as I have none to base.

But I did try to find flaws, research others incase it's not a flaw I'll slate phones when necessary (like the crappy N93 door covers and it's cheapy attempt at silver plastic...damn what were they thinking?) but I was just impressed by the whole package.

It's just a shame we can't use them as standard phones.

Thumbs up I'm not disappointed

If there's any one with any doubts about getting an N800 they shouldn't after reading your review. Excellent work!

I hummed and ha'ad about upgrading my N770 (6months old) to this new beauty but wouldn't have spent so much time procrastinating if I'd have found your review first! I got mine yesterday and it's a heck of an improvement.

You didn't (I think) mention that SKYPE will be coming to an N800 near you later this year. This is one of the (many) main reasons I spent my Christmas money on the N800.

How to make youtube (or google video) to work on your N800

I've just added this information to the conclusion page:

From internettablettalk.com, aflegg has a solution for youtube playback.
Quote:

Quote:
YouTube on the move could be done with VidConvert or, soon, MaemoTube

I've tried VidConvert. Just copy the link and straight away it's done converting. (larger files will take a little longer, but not much)

You can choose to:
1. save it
Wonderful! I'm actually enjoying the fact that I could not view youtube directly as it means I can save video clips direct onto the N800 which I could not do before.
2. Or stream it
like you would if you were in youtube. You can choose to save it as a stream too if you do not have disk space or if you just want to view it there and then without download.
My first attempt of a random video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60lqUDWdP5Y) was good but out of sync. However, succeeding video converts are flawless, to an extent, better than viewing on the computer as it's converted specifically for the N800.

What's more is that it's full screen!!!

There's also the option to upload a video for conversion, so if there are files that do not work for the N800, it will make it so. Unfortunately it's limited to 43mb, so really no 3 hour length special, but it's better than nothing...and most clips are going to be within that size limit.

Only problem perhaps is a queue. Even if you decide to cancel and convert something else, your prevous attempt puts you another space behind the queue.

But as said, better than nothing. And there's probably other sites like this....I'll update on ones I find.

I'm glad you enjoyed and congratulations on your new N800!

Sorry about missing SKYPE info, I mainly discussed things I had used, but you're right, I should have noted about that partnership.

There was quite a lot of other things I missed out on too I'f I get some more time, I might add those extra info. But yup, Skype is a big plus on the N800.

N800 info from mobiletechnews.com

At the CES show, Nokia is demonstrating several captivating features that can be experienced soon with Nokia N800. These include
  • Internet enhanced navigation with Navicore software
  • calling and messaging with a number of popular services as well as the RealNetworks' Rhapsody music service
  • Nokia also announced a development cooperation with Skype on Internet Telephony that will allow Skype users to make Internet calls from their Nokia N800
Users of the Nokia N800 will be able to benefit from a wide range of third party applications.

Video chat question

Nice review - I picked up an N800 a couple of days ago based on feedback from sites like this. Being a former 770 owner I can confirm that the N800 is MUCH improved over the 770 in terms of performance and stability. While the 770 was a great "proof of concept" the N800 actually delivers on all the things the 770 promised.

One question/problem .. How are you doing video conferencing?? Is it only with another N800? The only chat/call client on the device is Google Talk, and PC based Google talk does not support video. I downloaded the Festoon beta on my PC hoping that might work, but sadly requires that both sides use Festoon service for video, so no luck.

Other than waiting for Google to update their PC client for video is there some other trick to video conferencing with a device other than another N800??

Thanks,
Steve

Sorry if the steps sound extremely basic, it's just to prevent misinterpretations of some vague steps.

Instructions on How to Video Call from PC user to Nokia N800

1. From the N800, Open the camera.
It will automatically load up video call app.
2. Select appropriate contact for video call.
You should see a view finder and on the lower right "Select contact". The N800 will initiate a voice call and inform you that:
"Remote clinet unable to support video"
3. On the N800, click/tap "Send Invitation"
The quickest way is to "Send invitation message via Chat"

This will load up I.M. on your N800 and send an invitation to the PC user.

4. The user on the PC end will receive this message:
Quote:
(Your N800 gtalk name) is inviting you to start an Internet video call (voice-only calling also supported).
Click the following link for further instructions:

http://videovoip.tableteer.nokia.com...n.xhtml?(+your N800 gtalk name and invitation code - don't worry about this)
Tell them to click that link, install the software from box 1(if they haven't already)
5. From the PC, Go back to that site and click "Add Contact"
You will be asked to open an application. Launch it.
6. From your Nokia N800, Click the "Contacts Icon" right underneath the Web Browser Icon.
You will notice on the very bottom "Authorise (Name of PC gtalk)"
7. From your Nokia N800, Click "Authorise (Name of PC gtalk)"
A pop up will appear,

Quote:
"Authorisation request"

(Name of PC gtalk) wants to add you to his/her contact list....ETC ETC

User ID: somethingsomething@call.tableteer.nokia.com
Nickname: something
Click "Yes"
Given that you have set both of your presence status as something visible, you will see your contact name in the "Nokia Internet Call Invitation" PC application.

Congratulations! You can now make video calls, but up to this method, from PC to N800.
8. To initiate video calls from your Nokia N800 to a PC user,

You must add the pc user's ".call.tableteer.nokia.com" internet calling address to that user's contact information under the field "Nokia Internet Call...." (Alternatively you can create a new individual one)

This ".call.tableteer.nokia.com" address can be obtained when you make a video call from PC to N800 (there must be another way but this is how I got it)

It appears on your N800's screen, right above the main video.
I've tested all the information above and that's how it has worked for me.
I hope this helps.
