I think that this is going to be big...over some time, it could rival or even replace 2-way radios.

cheers!

Yep PTT has been in the US for years if not a gazillion. BUT, only on NExtel. As far as PoC (ptt over cullular) its just now being known on handhelds, becuase obviously it needs software. And, there are a few standards too. Nokia has their own, while sony, panasonic and samsung (I think) were working on one collaboritively.

But then again - who the hell knows :-P

Yup, but now it's into cellphones too. It's like making your phone behave like it's a 2-way radio or somethin... instead of carrying a radio and phone, you only now have to carry one, a PTT-enabled phone. (and I think Nextel ain't on GSM, right?)

cheers!

Well, Nextel's network is based on TDMA like GSM, but iDEN runs on different protocols and everything and are thus incompatible. You can put your Nextel SIM card into a GSM phone and it'll work in non-iDEN countries, but that's about where the compatiblity stops...

PTT has been in the US for ages, dominated by Nextel. However, they've no longer been the only ones for quite some time now. All the major CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon have offered PTT-services for a lont time now, named under Ready-Link and just Push-to-Talk respectively. Regional carriers Alltel and U.S. Cellular also runs them under Touch2Talk and SpeedTalk. Keep in mind however, none of these carrier's PTT systems have intercarrier operability, although that may change with the finalization of the Sprint-Nextel merger.

GSM carriers Cingular and T-Mobile still have yet to offer PoC, although Cingular is rumored to release it this fall...:D

They are definitely testing it (in Florida). I am not sure about the release date, but the fall wouldn't be out of the question. Cingular has a lot on its hands right now: network integration, with some major hurdles (issues) in NYC and California, the impending release of UMTS, and now PTT. They better prioritize.

I would think finalizing the integration is the most important...I think what should be first on their list is trying to help the old AT&T customers, like having the Cingular phones compatible with AT&T SIM cards...

Just today, I called my aunt in CA on Cingularand then she randomly got dropped...surely not my phone. They need to fix all the bugs first and foremost before attempting to release UMTS and PTT...seriously, it won't do any good to have the features but not the reliability:rolleyes:
