View Full Version : A Siemens user drooling at the K750i ...

A few factors got me to actually seriously consider this phone despite the fact that my S65 is barely a year old ... Love my phone, and I definitely love the Siemens UI but ... while I haven't seen the K750i in person yet, it doesn't seem too bad. I do have a few questions though:

1. If I were to lock the keypad and an SMS comes in and the ringtone plays, do I have to unlock the phone first before I can turn off the ringtone? On my S65, if the phone is locked and a call comes in, I can just answer it by the touch of a button. But if it's an SMS that comes in, I have to unlock it while the ringtone continues playing, and then "acknowledge" it. How is it on the K750i?

2. There's a little "Currency Converter" program on my S65. Since I do travel quite a bit this is quite useful and while it's not a deal-breaker, I'd love to have something similar on the new phone. Is there such a thing on the K750i? Or is this just an applet I can download from somewhere?

3. Is there voice-dialling? (The S55 had it but S65 didn't ... :( )

4a. I assume I can assign ringtones to groups (phone entry groups, that is), sms, and alarm.

4b. Can I assign ringtones to individuals?

5. Is there a way to change timezones? (Such as when I travel.)

6. Let's say I sort my phonebook using the usual "LastName, FirstName". If I entered "*LastName, Firstname"--would this appear at the bottom or top of my entries? If that puts it at the bottom, what character do I use to make it appear at the top?

7. On my S65, while the phone is idling on the main display, a flick down on the joystick brings me to the phonebook and a flick up brings me to my profile list. What are the similar shortcuts on the K750i?

8. On the S65, even if the phone is off I can still have alarms function (e.g., so I can wake up while conserving phone battery) UNLESS it's in "Aircraft Mode". "Aircraft Mode" (profile, really) means the phone is off and nothing will turn it on. Is there a similar function on the K750i?

9. I read somewhere that the K750i can do encrypted POP3 connection? Did I misread this (I can't find it anymore) or is this true? If this is true, this could very well be a deal-breaker. I've never seen such capabilities before on any non-PDA-type phones (even then, I don't know if they have them).

Lastly ... I'm currently in Singapore for another two weeks. What's the best place to get this? I suppose I can try Sim Lim Sq. but there is also a ... Mobile Sq. on Scots/Orchard Rd. area?

Thanks all!!!

I hate replying to my own posts but since I've had this for about a day I figured I should write something ... (Thanks to ahbear for pointing me to MobileSquare .. it's just a walk from where I'm currently staying and saved me from SGD138 as Sony Sq @ Wisma was asking for 838 ..)

First off, the answers to my own questions:

1. Behavior is the same and it made sense, really. The phone is locked. *sigh*

2. :( Looks like I may have to go find this somewhere.

3. Yes, though I haven't tried it. It just occured to me that since I don't have a car anymore, I don't really need a headset either. (Whew! More money saved!)

4. YES but no groups. Considering how flexible their UI/config seems to be, all they really needed to have to do is show the following for indiv ringtone: a) group b) indiv setting

Oh well.

5. Yes

6. Haven't figured it out yet. :(

7. Now this was impressive. I could configure what I want the phone to do for every direction I flick the d-pad. Now, if only I could reconfig. the default soft-keys during idle ....

8. Looks like alarms will still ring when the phone is off.

9. Yes it can but I haven't gotten it to work. Maybe something with GPRS roaming??

All in all, after getting used to the excellent UI (fast response time, smooth, blablabla) I'm really REALLY liking this phone. The keypad is a bit cramped, but I got small fingers :D so it didn't really bother me all that much. Surprisingly the keypads are actually comfortable to use.

The d-pad is a tad sensitive but I got used to it pretty quickly. One thing it's still doing is that when I pushed the d-pad to select something instead I push it off to one direction then it registers the push. No good. :(

Sound quality seems to be decent but I suppose I don't know what "good" sound quality really is. It sounded just like my other phones.

MP3 playback ... I think I read somewhere that it doesn't 320kbps. Well, it does. Either that or Winamp is giving me false info. Equalizer only works when headphone is attached.

Flashlight function is TRES COOL. For all these years I've used the display of my cell as a mini flashlight and it would soon turn off. NOW A REAL FLASHLIGHT ON MY PHONE! W00T!

Surprisingly, I haven't really played around with the camera. I mean, I have, but I haven't transferred anything back to my system.

Speaking of systems, I sync'ed to Outlook just fine. Then again, all I sync is contacts and calendars.

Seems to be a bit lighter than my S65, a bit smaller as well. I was surprised to see such a small screen size. I had read the pixel dimenions and I thought it'd be larger .. I guess the K750i has smaller pixel size than the S65 did. And while we're comparing ... pushing the d-pad during screensaver doesn't bring the phone back to life like the S65 ...

Questions:

1. How do I tell if a file is stored on the phone memory or the memory stick?

2. Is there a way to reconfig the default soft keys action for when the phone is idling? (it's currently set to "Calls" and "Menu")

3. I've set the music button to go to the media player but it seems to only work if the headset is attached???

4. Is there a way to download themes from SE w/o using the phone as they instructed? GPRS roaming (I'm w/ Optus in AU and currently in Singapore) doesn't seem to be working and I wanted to see what some of the other themes are like ...

Anyway, from someone who thought it'd be tough to get him to buy a non-Siemens phone ... I gotta say this is the best phone I ever owned yet.

(Oh, and knock on wood, none of the freezing/crashing so far .. )
