View Full Version : Switching Carriers - No Contracts

It seems that the much flaunted European Mobile Phone Nirvana is about to take off in the US. Consumers will be able to easily switch carriers by simply switching SIM cards and many operators are expanding their GSM coverage. Now, I am excited about being able to purchase any technically compatible phone, such as the Z600, and use it with my carrier. However, it seems to me that this is only one-half of the equation. To truly take advantage of this technology would require a customer's freedom to add and drop carriers at whim. I realize that there are prepaid services.

However, I would like to know if I bought an unlocked phone, could I then approach any carrier and receive the same calling plans, such as T-Mobile's Get More plan (600 anytime and unlimited nights & weekends) without having to sign a one or two-year agreement. I realize that providers want to decrease churn, however, what is my incentive to sign a contract if I do not take advantage of a subsidized mobile phone?
