View Full Version : What can I do with my Smartphone (6680)?

Hi everyone. Newbie alert. Anyway, I've just got my new 6680 on 3 (UK - I'm from England) and seeing as it's a smartphone I was thinking it would be good to have a thread with any info, links, recommendations etc for programs, tricks, advice etc for what can be done with a smartphone (particularly my 6680 - ie series 60s).
Basically, I want to know what I can get (preferably for free - I'm a poor student) and how to make the most of my new phone. I would like info on;

Games
Connectivity
Camera
Screen
Accessories
etc.

Specifically (and people can add to these requests as they wish) I would like to know any info on a few things I want to be able to do. I've been playing with my friend's se k750 and, although I much prefer the looks of my 6680, I do envy several features of that phone (besides the 2.0mp camera  )

1. Is there a way of having the flash always on (ie when framing a picture, not just when the photo is taken)?
2. Is there some kind of program that lets you use the phone horizontally when taking photos (it would be easy and quite ergonomic to use the voice dial button on the side to take and the up and down (or left and right, when horizontal) buttons to zoom?
3. Is there a program to make a 'panoramic view' possible (like on k750) - where you take a photo and it shows you the edge of it so you can take the next photo etc?
4. Is there an add-on so that the phone can be used as a personal radio?
5. Any memory-saving tips or programs as the internal memory is not great?
6. Any good (preferably free) games for s60?
7. Any good (and again preferably free) other programs for s60?
8. Any other good programs/tips/advice/accessories?

Thanks a lot for your help and I think this could become a general reference thread so people don't send multiple similar questions...

Joe

This is the wrong site and forum for that sort of specialized info. May i reccomend Allaboutsymbian.com.
Go to the forums, read the articles and you find a wealth of info on what you can do with you new smartphone.

Goodluck.

What features do you exactly envy from your friend's K750? Besides hardware, there's nothing you can't get for your marvelous 6680 to outdo your friend's K750:p

Well, basically all the things I listed - the radio, the panorama mode, holding the phone horizontally in camera mode etc.
To the other poster - questions about a nokia phone in a nokia board? What was I thinking??? Sorry, I forgot, this board is only for dreaming about the n90 and all the other nokias that aren't actually out until next century...

Well, sorry for you not reading well and for me trying to be helpful. You asked for smartphone info in a general nokia forum and i directed you to a smartphone specialised forum.

You are very welcome.

Obviously you didn't read well. I asked specific questions about my 6680 eg. how to take pictures when it's horizontal, is there a radio add-on etc.
Jesus, no wonder these boards are so quiet the way you all treat newbies. Good forums accept mistakes from people unsure of the specific details of the boards and help. I certainly won't be posting here again with attitudes like yours.

I"m sorry for his rudeness, but I assure you not all MobileBurn posters are like him. The radio add-on, I'm assuming, can be achieved with the Nokia Radio Headset HS-2R, although that's just a hypothesis since that's how you can get radio on the 7610. As for taking pictures horizontal, there's a picture that shows that being done, although it may either be the realtime viewfinder or just the picture...

This is a board for mobile phone users and he posted in the Nokia section which contains several users who own the 6680 which he was asking questions about , god he's so dumb...

Joe - in answer to your questions, first of all to enable you to listen to the radio on your phone the only solution like carcomptoy said is the headset. There is a program which you can install on the phone to listen to radio stations over gprs but as 3-UK don't allow any external net access it wouldn't work.

At the moment there aren't really any programs made for the 6680 which will enable you to have the flash on automatically for every photo, but then again you wouldn't want it on all the time (just try and take a photo in a well lit room with the flash on and you will see what I mean :) ) also I don't think there are any programs to let you take photos in any panoramic mode, but if you want to take photos sideways it isn't a problem as you can just flip them round on your PC again.

To save memory there are a few things you can do like reduce the quality of your photos/videos in the camera settings, reduce the number of sent/saved messages the phone stores etc, or you can just do what I do and back all your photos and videos up every few days on your PC and delete them from your phone. That way you can use the highest settings and not worry about running out of memory if you just transfer them to your computer, at least that way they are always there if you did want them back on your phone.

I don't really play games on the phone except from the standard Nokia ones like snake ex, bounce and triple pop which can be found for free on the Nokia site on product pages for the 6600, 6630 etc. The only apps I use are field test (which allows you to lock the phone to GSM only which 3 have disabled) and FExplorer which is like windows explorer and lets you view all the folders and files on the phone.

www.my-symbian.com has a load of games/apps listed on there if you want to have a look through and see which ones you're interested in.

Hope you found this helpful, I was just actually about to go to bed but after reading a certain someones post I thought I would try to be give you some useless info so you don't lose all faith in this site :)

Hi,

If you don't feel comfortable around some users on this board just ignore them. There are some people I don't get on with here either.

I own a 6630 as my main phone and you can do a lot of things with it. So to answer your questions:

1. I don't think so yet, but in time it may be possible - I'm surprised it wasn't implemented from the start. It is a useful feature...
2. Not heard of it to date but third-party possibly, just remember the camera orientation is horizontal so having it vertical would either drop your resolution to 960 x 720 or mean framing it vertically at full res.
3. Something like this: http://www.symbos.com/live/product_information.php?ApplicationID=1748
4. You can get either a third-party FM radio headset or a GPRS radio (costs money and needs GPRS signal, probably not possible on Three due to their 'walled garden')
5. You can either compress the memory (use one of many third party apps out there like FExplorer or Psiloc Space Doubler)
6. Games like SkyForce, Midtown Madness 3D, Stunt Car Extreme, etc. but generally not free - unless you're into cracked stuff which isn't discussed here
7. Cocktail is a great free program (especially for students!) which shows you how to make 800ish cocktails, you can choose the ingredients you have and it tells you what you can make, etc. Highly recommend FExplorer for file management too. Nokia's Sensor might be of use if you can find people using it. Also Nokia's Lifeblog, it costs money but it synchronises and organises your life on your phone so you can see what you did, sent, snapped photos of that day and downloads them to your PC for a safe store. Nokia's PC Suite is free as well but is perhaps the BEST implemention of any phone management software - you can sync address books, convert videos, transfer MP3s, etc. and it costs nothing. Your CD might be outdated, the latest version is 6.5 from Nokia's 6630/6680 page.
8. I would recommend the 'call log' trick which should make the phone faster. Also avoid anti-virus software as it stalled my phone quite badly, best precaution is to not install things you can't verify origin of - so turn Bluetooth off unless you need it.

Hope that helps, anyway you can ask me if you need anything else in the privacy of a private message - don't get put off, of all the new members you have asked a worthwhile question - many come on here to post for unlocks without even reading the rules. Now that you have a top-end smartphone might as well use it...

I wouldnt say that this was the wrong forums for specialised info.

There are quite a few members here who are also members of all about symbian and other series 60 related forums who would more than be willing to share any information they have.

Its always worth asking but i would never say any site and forum is wrong. Just other forums may have a higher chance of answering questions with a useful answer.

Not everyone treats newbies bad (if you- thread starter thought you were treated bad). I think we all (I do anyway) quite like newbies, and some newbies here are v cool and are now regular posters. (Some just come on here to use the forums as a call centre and never ever come back again) Its that some people may loose their rag when say see how certain newbies treat the forum by demanding things, asking gratuitous questions like which is better X or Y without giving a reason why they picket out X or Y.:D

i heard that the 6680 has a feature that you move a switch up on it and a beam of light extracts out of it, maiking it into what the jedi refer to as a 'lightsaber'

that'll be great at parties.

and possibly useful if you want the flash to stay on while you're framing the shot...

Isn't there also another website for S60? Like an ultra specialized one, that goes really in-depth into the tech geek aspects of it:p Seriously, though, I know there's some people who've posted the link to that website before...I just can't remember what website it was!

well, there is always symbian.com, but i'm sure there are other sites for programers if you want to get that technical. Besides that, i dont really know anyother that i've needed other that the one that just recommends apps and other symbian smartphone related news.

Hope that helps.

I"m sorry for his rudeness, but I assure you not all MobileBurn posters are like him.

yes there are many forums specifically about series 60, where each and every (popular ) s60 phone has its own section. The one i know gives away warez (i dont use it no more) so i cant post the link here. But other than that, everything else is good.
