Nice review thanks :) I'm looking at shelling out hard cash on a 9300, 9500 or 7710 - but the lack of any sort of decent keyboard support on the 7710 is daft.

One thing about the review.. I've never counted EDGE as a 3G technology, just a revision of 2G GSM (sometimes it's called 2.75G!) 3G tends to be used for UMTS/WCDMA devices commonly found in Europe and elsewhere.

EDGE is pretty rare in some countries - for example, it doesn't exist at all in the UK where networks moved straight to 3G. The lack of 3G support in the 9300, 9500 and 7710 in my view are all serious shortcomings.

Consider the HTC Universal which really does have it all.. 3G, GSM and WiFi combined with a QWERTY keyboard and a really large screen. OK, we'll probably be waiting a while for that, but it seems to be top of the heap as far as these devices are concerned. So, personally I'm hoping for a 3G revision of the 7710/9300/9500 sometime soon.. please!

www.nokia.fi lists that the bt keyboard is supported. My guess is that on a future firmware upgrade, the keyboard will be supported.

Thanks for great review! But I want to mention that it IS possible to use bluetooth keyboard with 7710.

I have used nokia SU-8W keyboard with nokia 7710 for over two weeks now (I type this message using SU-8W+7710) and I'm very pleased with this keyboard, there are no lag (except when you hit a million keys at once :). Keyboard shotcuts are also very useful.

I got the keyboard driver from phone shop where I purchased the keyboard, but it should be downloadable from nokia.com in near future (there are no need to update the firmware). If you need the driver send me a PM.

EDGE is an officially defined 3G technology. So is 1xRTT, in reality. Any technology with a theoretical speed of 144Kbps or above is considered 3G. EDGE meets that requirement, though it is not on par with EV-DO and UMTS as far as data rates go. Not even close.

just a quickie.

what apps do you guys use on the 7710? ive had mine since friday and havent really thought about it so much. and another thing:whats up with the data transfer speed?! so slow. my jam has usb connection and is million times quicker.

Welcome to Symbian OS or so Nokia tech support blame on the data speeds - I used an MMC card reader to transfer files etc....far swifter....

I like the 7710. Been using it again since I got it back. I like the big display and such, and now that I can use the ThinkOutside Bluetooth Stowaway on it, all the better.

As to apps, I use IM+. That's about it other than the stock apps.

I also use a USB 2.0 card reader for transferring files. Any other way takes far too long, which makes Nokia's music app for transferring stuff from the PC basically useless.

what do you guys think of the screen? i dont thionk its as bright and sharp as say the jam(or any other htc devices) or the mpx220. its kinda dull looking

Michael

It is a bit yellow in color and not as bright as some, true, but it is quite sharp. I have no problem with it from a practical view.

It' no "lady killer" but I'd put it on par with Ipaq's and co...

Camera is a let down, unsure why Nokia keep differing the camera supplier...

A good pda/phone but if not using the apps wouldn;t burden my pocket or bag with it..

Michael

I don't mind the camera at all, really. It isn't the best I have used, but its faults are all minor. It is kinda a general purpose camera that can take a "reasonable" photo in most situations.

yes your right, it is quite sharp, hust the dulness that makes me not like it. cam is not good, but i'm used to that by now. havent had a good cam phone since...well ever:D

i'm now tryng to sell mine and save up for the htc universal in september or so(what the release date on that thing?)

yes everything and i mean everything you would need in a phone is in it.

on the downside though: it is very big!!

It is big but when you can shift the bulk of a 7710 the HTC will be a light relief...OS5 also has excellent benefits over the Symbian OS..

Iron Mike
07-21-2005, 04:49 AM
actually the universal is a lot larger, heavier and more cumbersome than the 7710.

i dont have a problem with the nokia it fits in my pockets quite nicely:)

Mike you must be wearing combats or have tradis pockets....it does fit in but don't find it comfortable...

The HTC is bigger in all areas but offers an awful lot more for you hard earned £$'s

the universal costs as much as a cheap laptop!! its very expensive, yes it offers more, but for that kinda money i expect my phone to do all the talking for me:D

i will do my darndest to buy it though!
