On the Nokia official site we could find a section for the Imaging phones. but starangly the 3230 & the 7710 are not listed there as Imaging phones  check it HERE (http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,6771,54733,00.html) . they described the Imaging phones out there as :
(Nokia imaging phones give you advanced imaging features like larger screens, increased memory, video capability, plus plenty of image sharing options and applications. Browse the wide range of Nokia imaging optimized phones and discover the difference.)
don't the 3230 & 7710 fulfill all these conditions and more ?!!!

Maybe because both the 3230 and the 7710 suck?

The real reason is marketing.
For example, they don't even market the 7610 as a smartphone, only imaging phone.
6670 = smartphone/business.
7710 = widescreen multimedia.
They don't mention all the features, only the ones that are the 'key' of sale.

if you think that's rubbish, pick up an orange retail mag if you're near a shop
what does this sound like: "compact flip phone, great for high-resolution pictures"
it's a description of the Moto v220!
high resolution compared to what? it's one of the nastiest cheapest camphones out there!

why is the 7600 imaging
7600 is imaging because it doesn't fit into any other category
it's s40 so it's not a smartphone, too big to be a fashion phone
remember it came out dec 2003, so for the time it wasn't a bad imaging phone, i had one then (on 3, grr!) and everyone was impressed with the photos, although obviously by the time of the 7610 et al it was quite old news

at the time of release i didnt like it! lol.
when my friend bought it, i was like, cool, ok - but the one im getting - looks like this but its a gagillion times (exageration) more awesome.
fashion would have been a good place to put it though - at the time of release, those imaging band things/necklaces were also released. its got that funky fashion shape and those changing "sleeves"...

ok, so gagillion is an exageration, so how much more awesome was it? maybe a bazillion times? or just a majillion times? :D
seriously, though, in dec 2003 the 7600 was a pretty impressive phone for imaging. video and a semi-decent night mode at the time were pretty new, it was only really up against the 6600, and it had unlimited video clips.
now, of course, everything is different. there was a time when a phone would have been called a "business phone" if it had a calendar and infra-red, whereas nowadays everything has that or better so it seems a strange statement to make- nokia 3200 "business phone", anybody?

yeah i spose! lol.
my friend hated it though - texting was so annoying! it was popular at the school - loadsa kids had it - especially when three gave this amazing offer where the contract totalled they had a free 7600, £9.99 contract with first 6 months half price, 500 minutes, 100 texts!

yeah it got daft towards the end with that phone, they'd practicall pay you to use it for a year.
but i still sold mine 2 months ago, in used condition with no accessories, for £82 on ebay! lol i was hoping for about £35 but strange things happen sometimes

The 7600 is a fashion phone.
In december of 2003, at the time of release, it had excellent features for a Series40 phone.
It is not really an imaging device, maybe marketing struck again?

IT WAS AN IMAGING PHONE, IN DEC 2003.
i'm gonna be adamant about this one.
after all, what else are you supposed to do with the thing, given the keypad layout?

No it wasn't an imaging phone.
it's about as fashionable as tank tops and loon pants, therefore it's not a fashion phone
it had the best camera and one of the biggest screens at the time, and new picture editing features. therefore it was an imaging phone.
QED.

fashion is a category that has no boundry, so for you, you might not find tank tops cool, but other people might.
anyways,..from threegmobile.net "it was a fashion phone"...like you said why else would they make the keypad like that..

REVIEW
Nokia 2nd 3G phone is officially launched in Hong Kong. Instead of hard selling the 3G advantages, Nokia chooses the fashion elements as the promoting items. In Hong Kong the phone is not in the list of forth coming 3G phone model for Hutchison 3HK network. However, all 6 GSM networks still carry this handset, simply because it is fashionable, it is still a good multimedia phone.
The Outlook
Nokia 7600 is probably the trendiest 3G phone. The rhombus outlook itself tells you. Fashionable design does not necessarily mean convenience. The rhombus shape is not small, and makes the handset wider than the normal bar shape phone. The hand needs to expand more to hold the phone tight. The uncomfortable feeling gets badly when talking on the phone directly using the earpiece. Unluckily enough the keypad is diverted into left and right part. Users find it hard to dial a number using one hand. Instead of changeable faceplate, Nokia 7600 uses Xpress-on sleeves in both sides. The material also prevents the slippery hand.

don't goad me here...
there must have been a few different marketing campaigns, cos the one i got was promoting it as an imaging phone. i worked for dial-a-phone at the time, and nokia definitely seemed to be pushing the imaging side of things to us.
what i'm accepting, though, is that the fashion side of things was also something to take into consideration, and yes, to a degree it was marketed on that aswell :)
