you know, the song where the lyrics are just spam, spam, spam all the way through.

it kept cropping up on the show, and became associated with something annoying, that there was lots of, that you couldn't get away from

so when people needed a catchier name for "unsolicited email" they went for "Spam"

True story, that

interesting, but maybe not as surprising as the paper thing; going from making engines to making cars isn't that huge a leap...

right, i'm running out of material here so this one's rubbish; did you know that most of the senior management that launched orange in 1994 subsequently left to launch a different company in 2003: the name of that company, gentlemen, please.

Maybe thats why they called themselves 3 :D

I thought they call themselves three because theyre the first 3g based network in UK?

I was just looking at an old s60 theme and the theme said Hutch Orange. Is that the same Hutchison?

hmm did some reading: (http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/May2005/1434.htm)

Europe : The entrance of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd's subsidiaries, 3 and HTIL, to the mobile communications industry has reinvigorated it during an era in which most observers have been talking about consolidation, not expansion. "Despite the often hostile media press," says Jake Saunders, ABI Research's Director of Research, Europe, "Hutchison's 3 has been able to wade in and grab the consumer by the lapels. Just a year ago, headlines were predicting a hasty and undignified exit from 3G by 2006. That possibility is receding fast."

Here are seven little-known facts and forecasts about Hutchison (HWL):

1. HWL manages its mobile networks through a number of brands: 3, Orange, Hutch and others. Expect consolidation of those brands under Hutch (if 2G) and 3 (if 3G).

2. Expect a number of IPOs hosted by HWL in local markets. Italy is next, in mid-2005.

3. 3.5G technologies, such as HSPDA and HSUPA, will not only improve the end-user download experience but also cut the cost and number of 3G base stations needed by 2010.

4. Expect to see HWL take a keen interest in markets in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Hutchison's Indian assets will become star performers within HTIL.

5. 3's ARPU is among the highest in its market. It will inevitably decline, but will remain above the market average.

6. The 3 brand is rapidly becoming an iconic brand similar in strength to Vodafone and Orange. In the UK, the operator has won a number of consumer and innovation awards.

7. 3 has achieved approximately 3-4% market-share and is projected to attain 13-18% by 2006 in many markets. Markets in which 3 is making inroads are: Hong Kong, the UK, Italy and Sweden. More challenging markets include Austria, Denmark, Ireland and Norway.

ABI Research's study, "Hutchison's 3 & HTIL" explores 3's & HTIL's organizational structure, network deployment, tariffs, value-added services and operational benchmarks, as well as handset features and pricing.

yes, it's the same company that set up orange and then sold it.

definitely true, although i reckon orange have lost their way a bit recently, the new CEO is a bit stuck in the 90's in a lot of ways.

i dunno exactly what's going on, but june 1 is going to be the launch date of some new contracts. just get the impression it could be something big, thought i'd tell everyone, so if it is i can say- i said that would happen

the adverts are good, especially the cinema ones, but i don't reckon there's all that many genuinely new ideas, mostly just gimmicks. apart from the free reserve calls on PAYG, that's brilliant, well overdue and could even save lives. honestly.

whats reserve calls on PAYG?

is that when the network lets you call when you have no credit left (i thought one network does that already)

I like Orange's family contract plan.

I would use it if I had children. Id pay for, maybe 30 a month, and what ever they use after that is up to them. :D Thats fair.

yeah my sister's phone bill is always huge, and my dad just pays it anyway. what annoys me is that they should go up a tariff and it'd be cheaper, but he's like, "we agreed £30 a month and i'm not going up from there!" and i'm like, well yes you are cos you're paying £100 half the time

I was gonna take my contract to the lowest possible and just use my pay and go sim but

im ending the contract in june/july.

My network is 02. I only picked it cos:

o2 were the first to have the n7610 in stock
I thought my old sim was broke and was somehow giving me free gprs, i thought it would be easier to switch to o2 contract to o2 pay n go. apparently they were giving out free contract up until i got my phone.
I hate how o2 doesnt have text rollovers unless you have a £30 ++ contract. grr @ o2 lol
