Hi

there is this store that sells a vodafone 6630 in the shop here in the Philippines

it's very cheap

he sells it for $230

but the catch is I have to get it unlocked because it's from Japan/Uk (I cant remember :D ) it would cost me $80 to unlock it (from a different store)

I was wondering if there are disadvantages on having a phone unlocked?

will it put the phone at risk?

and is a vodafone 6630 any different from the nokia's 6630?

there arent any grave disadvantages from having the phone unlocked (if you call only being able to use one network an advantage)...in reality no disadvantage from having an unlocked phone.

vodaphone's 6630 would probably have customised the menu/rsmmc etc.

$80 (USD - IF HKD THEN S'OK) is a bit much though to get it unlocked. I think theres a section on this website (or u can search the net) for unlocking codes which are free( generally)

i think vodafone disables mp3 ringtones.. i think that is the only difference between a vadofone nokia 6630 and a normal nokia 6630...

mmm.... if I were you, I wont buy that phone. I'd probably add some cash and opt to buy an openlined 6630 instead.

first thing you have to consider... is that the 6630, and 6680's, are very difficult to unlock - nearly impossible for some. Though I've heard that lower versions (3.45 and below) can be unlocked now - I still doubt if it doesn't harm the phone in any way.

second thing to consider... is that yes, it might, Im not saying it will, but it might put your phone at risk. If the unlocking is not done properly - there's a chance that you might corrupt the flash IC inside. And if that is corrupted - you might end up with a phone which rejects some sims and accepts others.
(why do you think that he's sellin it at that insanely cheap price, ey?)

lastly, unlocking, as everyone knows - voids the warranty on that phone. If there's still a chance that it can be returned to vodafone (like when there's a factory defect on it), having it unlocked would kill any chance of doing that.

am not scaring you or anythin... just want you to think things through, that's all.

cheers!

so...I guess Ill have to save my money for another year just to be able to save enough dough to buy a brand new unlocked 6630 :-/

Oh well if it's that risky and that hard to do well then.....

but the vodafone's 6630 has customized menus? WOW!!! sounds cool
