i've seen people speculating how it will be 1000 euros or so, and i really thoguht that this was just wild speculation..
but for anybody, like me, who was really planning on getting this phone, expansys.co.uk seems has it listed on pre-release at over £700 :( http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=121008
i wonder if the price will lower itself over time, and if so, how quickly.
Such prizes are for what marketing calls "early adapters", rich people who want be the 1st to own something new/flashy/etc.
Don't know your age, but many young people nowadays feel they need to have all these expensive material things, which in no way they can all pay for and such people call prizes like these for the 8800 too expensive.
It's just not targeted at you at all. So just live with it or save up all your lunch money (I mean this in general and this is not particullary targeted at you - topic starter.)

it takes quite some time for the premium range of nokia's prices to go down. And when it does it will still be very expensive. Example n8910(i) that was £500 for a whole year on contract (actually £499) ON CONTRACT! PPFT!
My aunt had it (8910i)- only thing cool was the slidy mechanism other than that it was wack.

i'm turning 18, at to an extent, you're right.
on the other hand, it's rather lame, for quite a few reasons. firstly, as with many phones, the mark up price of each handset is just ridiculous, and in terms of the amount of money that the phone as an electrical unit, consisting of a few chips already mass produced by robotics etc, it's quite a lot of money.
also, why do nokia only make attrative phones (in terms of minimalism design) for the high price bracket? they cater for the simple handsets with all those 2*** and 32** models, but they look like dog **** having been trodden on and mixed with acrylic paint. if somebody wants a mobile phone which looks not perhaps expensive, but purely aesthetic, it shouldn't be that the two (beauty and price) are mutually exclusive.

yeah - most of the nicer looking nokias appear at around 250 ++ mark (GBP) when brand new.
Maybe its because if they made nice looking cheap phones then it would degrade the niceness of their expensive models and their expensive models wouldnt be so relatively good looking.
I must admit that even though "looks would go on peoples taste" the cheaper end models are a bit crap (nice way of putting it). Build- design...but u get what you pay for from nokia - most of the time
My local dealer has released the price of the 8800 at ... uh, US$899, today's exchange rate. That might sound cheap, but they've got the correct pricing of 6630, 6680, 6230i, etc. months and months ahead and have always been correct.

a friend of mine, who's a ceo of this big advertising firm, is actually waiting for this phone. To him, "image" is everything, this phone would be essential for his job. He's now using a 6680, 2 weeks earlier he was using a 6630, a week before that - he was using a 3230. He was plannin on buying a 6230i but changed his mind and is waiting for this one instead. I guess... different people need different things. A phone's "prestige" might be nonsense to most, but for some, it could be very nice to have.
cheers!

its nice phone but it has crapy functioions.
These first prices are always "extremely" high. Again, this is for those that HAVE to be the first ones to show they own on.
Prices will drop pretty soon. Not to "cheap" level, but should drop at least quite a bit from the extreme "just out" prices.
And to comment on that other thing: Yeah, they cost next to nothing to produce, but that's how it goes.
You also pay $200 for a pair of Nike Air Jordans, while we all know, they probably cost €25 to make.

Even though it is new, it's still way too expensive for its own good!!! I mean, come on, it's only a S40 and it's more expensive than the 6680 ever was! (exaggeration but you get the point)...if I'm gonna spend this much on a phone, I'd rather get the N90.
@difenbaker Btw, what kind of person, especially a business person, goes from a S60 to a S40??? That makes absolutely no sense...

Yup, no sense at all, I agree. But then again, like I said, image is everything - I dont think he wants a series 40 (or series 60) for its functions, he's in it for the thrill of having one. If there was a series 60 - that has the same prestige, he'd probably get that one instead.
It's like a mercedes or bmw, nobody buys one coz of its performance, surely other cars can be faster, roomier, more comfy, more fuel economic, etc... other cars can have similar or even better engineering. But one does buy one coz of the image or the prestige they get for owning one. :)
cheers!

That's just stupid there!!! That's like two N90s...LOL I love how the N90 is the new standard. Everything's compared to it!!! That's the mark of achievement!:D

isnt that australian dollars though?
You guys just don't get it huh?
Also that example from the BMW and Mercedes is kinda a bad one. German cars....top of the world. Beautiful engineering, quality, etc.
Sure fuel economy might stink, but that goes for all performance cars. Just drive an E36 M3 and tell me that example again. These cars are so well engineerd and performance is nuts. While still being roomy and comfy.
ah yes, BMW's...
But on topic, while I would (also) never pay that much money for that phone, doesn't make the price too high.
That IS what exclusive things cost (where exclusive DOESN'T have to mean quality, many options etc.) but for what it means EXCLUSIVE.
I they made the pricetag 200, everybody would get one. Would you just as happily own one if all you friends, familiy and neighboorhood also had one? Nah, I don't think so.
The Price Is Right.

you must be a german car fanatic, hehehe...:D Yeah, I do agree that they have good engineering... but certainly, they're not the best. Volvo, for instance, is better in terms of impact resistance, crumple zones, and safety measures. Ferrari and Lamborgini, 2 other examples, have almost always built cars that are mid-engined, not front or rear engined like most german cars. They did this to extract the maximum amount of performance from the engine, and to achieve the best overall balance of the car - for maximum traction and handling. Then there's toyota - putting so many valves on their engines to extract the maximum burn for the minimum of fuel (fuel economy). Then there's also Range Rover - with their bulletproof suspension design for their SUV's. Then there's Porsche - who'd put light bodies on high horsepower engines, to bring out maximum acceleration out of their sports cars. There's also Saab - which made the first traction control for snow. The list goes on and on. The point is, sure they have good engineering, but it's NOT only engineering that customers are after.
All Im saying is that.... people will buy a BMW or a Mercedes PARTLY FOR THE PRESTIGE IT BRINGS, not just its engineering, it's engine or its interiors. It's like you're "buying the name" along with the car. THAT was the point of my analogy...
People will buy the 8800 partly for the prestige of owning one, of owning a top-of-the-line 88-series nokia, for belonging to the select few or select group of people to ever own one. Not everyone can afford or will even think of buying one, right? It's not a phone for the masses. Using the same analogy above..... NOT everyone owns and drives a beemer or a merc, right? So if you own one or drive one - you know that you're part of "limited" group, or a select few, or an EXCLUSIVE group of people only.
But on topic, while I would (also) never pay that much money for that phone, doesn't make the price too high.

Yup, my point exactly. The fact that this phone will be a rarity - could be one, if not the only reason, why the price is so high.
cheers!

going slightly off topic here, but with some retrospective irony, i've noticed this week that the carphonewarehouse website is selling 8910i's sim-free, brand new, for.... £199.99!
perhaps i'll wait a couple of years till there's a unwanted shipment of the phone lurking around, or something.
..... Ferrari and Lamborgini, 2 other examples, ...
Now you're comparing cars in between. I was trying to point out something else, but ow well.
Besided, if you want to compare cars....I think people will find a Ferrari or Lambo more prestige than a Beemer or Merc...
But again, back to the 8800. You (indeed) don't buy it for it's functions (or lack there of) but because you want a nice styled phone that won't be in anybody's hands....like 5110 and 3310 style phones.

thats still a very good price mind, considerin how long its been out. HOW long has it been out?? % wise it may be a big drop, but considering relatively how much it cost to make compared to how much its still selling for - it sstill v good.
