Activity Monitor ( Not Sports TRacker!!)

The Nokia Activity Monitor displays charts and statistics, in real-time, about your movements while walking or running. It counts the number of steps, and determines the distance covered and the energy expenditure. Summaries are stored in a diary so that you can compare your activity level on different days, and over longer periods of time. Your steps are detected by analysing the output from the accelerometer in an S60 smart phone. It is most accurate when you attach the phone to your belt, or upper arm, and it also works well if carry your phone in a pocket of your clothing. It might underestimate the number of steps if you keep the phone in a bag that you hold in your hand (as opposed to over your shoulder), and the most difficult case is when you hold the phone in your hand. Inevitably, false steps are detected sometimes, for example when you are cycling or driving.

The Activity Monitor currently runs on the N95 and the N95 8GB. You must have a memory card in your phone for the application to work. Be aware that the Activity Monitor's use of the accelerometer requires a fair amount of battery power. It does not shut down gracefully when the voltage drops, so keep an eye on the battery indicator during the day, and don't forget to stop the Activity Monitor before you go to bed! 5800 XM Tips and Tricks

1) To bring out the Shortcuts on your Screen/Desktop-> Settings/Personal/Home Screen/Home Screen Theme and select Shortcut bar, you can then select which shortcut to display if goto "Shortcuts". This will also bring out the "Track" playing being displayed when you open the Music Player.

2) Tap the Clock to bring out the Clock menu and make your alarm, alarm repeat is now built-in.

3) Tap the "General" or Date (the set Profile besides the clock) and the Profile selection menu pops out, almost similar to pressing the "Power" button in all S60, but here the Remove memory is not shown, but "Calendar" shortcut is included and the other profiles as well.

4) If you are on the Numeric Keypad, pressing the [#] key alternately will toggle the General and Silent Profiles, same as before, which means long press on zero [0] will bring out bookmarks for the Web.

5) Tapping on the displayed To do or Calendar entry will bring you immediately to that particular item.

6) Tapping the Active Icon on the Top Left (near the battery indicator) will give you shortcuts for any of the active icons.

7) Long press on the Green Call Button will still activate the Voice Command Prompt

8) Long press on the center button is similar to the Long press on the "Menu" key (the yin-yang key on most S60) which will bring out the menu for all the active applications.

9) Go to Applications/File Manager and setup "Backup" for automated backup schedule of your phone data.

Nokia Image Exchange

Nokia Betalabs has recently launched a new app called Nokia Image Exchange.

It is like a service for users to upload and sync photos on the phone with the server so you can view your photos either from your phone or the web.

1) iSync: Now you can easily synchronize the data of your Nokia 5800 and Mac with the help of iSync application. The plugin is officially released by Nokia and they have a “how to” here for iSync.

2) Mobbler: Mobbler is a Last.fm radio player and scrobbler for S60 smartphones. It allows you to listen to your Last.fm radio stations and to scrobble tracks played using the S60 Music Player. Mobbler now supports Nokia 5800 device as well.

3) ScreenSnap S60 V5: ScreenSnap is an application that allows you to take screenshots on your Nokia 5800 phone and save them as an image file and transfer to your PC or send them to your friends via email, bluetooth, multimedia message or infrared. Interesting little application to play with.

6) SymTorrent: This is a powerful BitTorrent client for Symbian phones now updated for S60 5th edition phones like Nokia 5800 and N97. SymTorrent supports downloading/ uploading multiple torrents at a time, pausing/ resuming them and check the status and stats of your torrent files.

7) Accuweather: This is a weather app which provides users with weather information for global locations including current conditions, 4-day forecasts, radar or satellite images, 15-day calendar view for a quick check of upcoming weather, hourly forecasts in graph format for visual display of temperature and conditions, and severe weather alerts (US only).

8 ) Worldmate: WorldMate is an essential app for anyone who travels frequently. The folders on any S60 device aren’t set in stone. You may already know how to move application icons between folders, but you may also want to rename the folders themselves. For example, ‘Music’ might become ‘Media’, or you might want to have ‘Puzzle games’ plus ‘Action games’. Use ‘Options>Rename’ on the main menu.

Home screen shortcuts

Did you know that the home screen on the Nokia 5800 contains more shortcuts than are immediately obvious? Touch calibration

If your touch inputs on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or N97 start to wander, you can of course recalibrate the touchscreen, just as for any PDA. The trick is to go into ‘Settings>Phone>Touch input’ and scroll right to the bottom of the dialog. Choose ‘Touch screen calibration’ and then follow the prompts.

PC, Mac and Restarts

If you experience trouble connecting your S60 phone to a Windows PC or Mac in ‘PC Suite’ mode, the first thing to try is restarting the computer (if PC Suite and Windows) or the phone (if Nokia Multimedia Transfer and a Mac, which tends to be a lot more stable). If this still doesn’t work, try restarting both!

Remember your store-bought music

When considering whether to upgrade your smartphone’s firmware, in addition to the usual backup/sync precautions, don’t forget about your Nokia Music Store tracks. Did you know that on the Nokia E71 and E63, a quick double press on the bottom left function key locks it, so that every subsequent keypress is ‘functioned’? The concept is similar to CAPS lock and can be handy when having to input complicated combinations of characters.

But if you’re hankering after a traditional ’shortcuts’-based screen then head for ‘Settings>Personal>Home screen>Home screen theme and change it back!

Turning contacts search back on again

If the contact quick-searching feature on your Nokia E71 or E63 home screens ever stops working, it’ll be because you turned it off by accident. Yet the setting to turn this on again isn’t obvious. Start typing on the home screen and then, and only then, hit ‘Options’, where you’ll see ‘Contact search on’ (or ‘off’).

More than 10 saved radio stations

On the Nokia E71 and E63, the hardware buttons and twin (’mode’) standby screens mean that you can avoid the S60 app menus completely if you choose your standby applications carefully. Kill data!

We’ve all been there. An application on our S60 phone has gone online and we’re not 100% sure which one’s still clocking up the bytes. Rather than shut everything down manually, one by one, go to the standby screen and press and hold the ‘Red’ (hangup) button. This will offer to kill any active 3G data connections.

Multi-line text entry behavior on Symbian: This was an issue when you exited text entry mode with predictive text on, or used the navigation keys. (Fixed Issues 7149 & 7112)
Superbar state on Symbian: Cancel button did not always exit from Superbar. (Fixed Issue 7156)
Samsung Propel and Jack (AT&T): Could not uninstall Skyfire if the SIM card was missing. Fixed.

Known issues in this release
Short-keys inconsistent on non-standard keyboard. On some keyboard layouts (half-qwerty, dual keyboards), the short-keys do not work as expected. (Issue 7498, 7408, 7581)

Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta Available Publicly

With improvements and bug fixes

Nokia has unveiled a new Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta version coming out of its Nokia Beta Labs a little more than two months ago, and now the company has announced that the software solution is publicly available for the owners of Nokia handsets out there. Although it is still in beta, the application comes with a wide range of bug fixes, its developers say, as well as with a series of improvements, aimed at bringing enhancements to the user experience.

Those who already used the Nokia PC software will find here some of the functionalities of the older pieces of sotware, as well as a series of new features. According to the company, the new Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 is meant to replace some of the existing Nokia solutions, including the Nokia PC Suite, Nokia Ovi Suite 1.x and Nokia Nseries PC Suite, while also including functionality coming from Nokia Photos, Nokia Software updater and Nokia Map loader.

The new Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta variant that was released into the wild on Thursday is reportedly the result of users' feedback, as the developing team analyzed error reports and worked on fixing the bugs that had been discovered. At the same time, the Nokia Beta Labs also notes that it will follow feedback from now on too, and that future releases of the software solution will reflect this state of facts.

Here's what it has to say about the new release:
- You asked support for application installation and that’s now working. Try double clicking your device application (.jar, .sisx) in PC and you should get your apps easily into device. This works great also, when downloading apps from web.
- In performance side, we’ve done lots of work related to memory consumption and trying to optimize load times. We hope to hear your feedback, please write your comments in this discussion thread.
- We hope to hear also your comments about photos and music sync, lots of error fixes have been made and also performance should [be] better compared to older Beta, you can comment that in this discussion thread.

In case you are not familiar with what the Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 can offer, we should mention syncing between a Nokia device and a personal computer, the possibility to move messages, contacts, photos, music and more between the computer and the Nokia device and share the photos on Ovi, as well as support for Ovi services available through signing in with a Nokia Account. The application can be used on computers running under Windows Vista SP1 or newer and Windows XP SP2 or newer. The developing team says Windows 7 will also be supported when available commercially.
