Hi there,
In the country you're in right now, do the people around you actually use text messaging? Or do they mostly prefer to call instead?
Like.... how many messages do you send? Or how many messages do you receive everyday?

Are you actually serious? There is very few countries where it is not popular.. It baffles me that that yanks do not use it more to be honest..
Here in Ireland, we are one of the biggest users with billions sent a year by only 3 million people. I will see if I can pulll some stats in work..
Some articles regading SMS usage can be found here:

weird question to be precise... Here in india i can safely say sms is popular in fact so popular around festivals time ( and believe me india has a huge no of those ) all networks announce upgrades to accomdate the sms storm that follows.
with just in and around 100 million users now including cdma landlines with sms capability and more.... one can say sms is here to stay

Well.. i send about 150 text messages a day.. i get 200 sms free everyday (yes everyday thats the new offer)...
and yes here in india there is a sms storm specially during christmas newyear and diwali... if suppose u send a message at 6 in the evening it gets delivered sometimes at 6 the next day morning.. So this time during new year hutch (orange) disabled delivery report.. but still there was a problem..
So conclusion is sms is very very popular..
Yes it is very popular in Germany too.

hehe... yup, twas a serious question.
actually, a friend of mine (the office he's working in, just conducted a huge survey) there in toronto, Canada......... found out that 6.3 out of 10 people do not use text messaging (sms) at all. On some states even, like Vancouver, it's up to 7.1 out of 10 - who dont use SMS.
then he showed me another survey, conducted by another firm, in the United States this time.... that's even more surprising, on some states, 9 out of 10 people dont use it. Wow.
cheers!

cool! 200 texts a day. Here in Manila (Philippines) where I am right now - it's very very popular too. I think 99 percent (if not all) of the mobile-phone-using public is into it. :D

Okay, many "Yanks" may not use it, but those "Yanks" that don't use it are the older population. Mostly all of us teenagers text, especially since that's the only way you can communicate in class really...I myself have 800 messages, which is taken up by text messaging and instant messaging...
And in the Philippines, like diffenbaker said, everyone's into it, not because it's "cool" but because it's the cheapest. I mean it's only 1PHP for text message as compared to like 6 or 7PHP a minute for voice calls, so yeah it's necessity really...

Well, I wouldn't say EVER SINCE but it has grown quite rapidly since its birth. But, as the saying goes, "Necessity is the mother of invention" and certainly a more discreet, yet less expensive way to communicate was needed, and here we are:D

In malaysia, it depends on ur network; DiGi offers 1 cent per sms (within the same network) and the others were 5 cents internal network; 15 cents between networks... quite costly in comparison to phillipines... I used to text alot, around 30 to 50 per day. Since i'm not stayin with my girlfriend then. But now, (we faced each other 24/7) i msg around 1 -2 per day. Sometimes none.

Wow, that's a lot of texts some of you send. i don't think i've got six thousand things to say in a month, and if i did a lot of them would be to people (like the prime minister, weatherman, God, etc) who's number i don't have.
I was about to say that through work i've come into contact with some people who send up to 3-3.5k texts a month. I thought they were mental, but aparrently some of you aparrently well-adjusted individuals do the same or more.
Did you know, when SMS was first invented it was used solely for network engineers to send information to each other, and wasn't opened up to the public until loads of the engineers said how cool it would be to send these messages to everybody, not just each other?
Another piece of SMS trivia maybe somebody can help me with; I'd heard that in one country at some point in the 90's everyone with a compatible phone could send unlimited texts free, even if it was Pay As You Go. Is this true, if so which country was it and for how long?

thats cool trivia...i like these did you know things! lol.
Most of the best and really cool inventions werent made for the purpose they have now. Theyre there by accident..some guy just goes..wouldnt it be cool if...? lol
im not sure what country but imagine if that happened now. UK is currently 104% saturated with mobile phones...the rest of europe will reach 100% in 2007.
BY THE WAY, I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS.
The messages you send and receive, do you delete them or save them? and if you save them - do you organise them or do you just let them pile up?
3gpeasy
05-08-2005, 04:41 PM
there was a time when i saved my favourite ones, on my 7110 i used to keep some i liked in my saved items folder; that was when i saw text messaging as more of an artform, now i just ask my mates when they're going down the pub and i get loads of texts saying 8pm, 8:30 pm, 7:30 pm etc etc. so i just leave them sitting there until my memory's full then delete everything

maybe undercover agents who have to pay for their own calls instead of being subsidised by the government.

LOL.... whats going on here?
See i agree i send 150 to 200 texts a day... but i dont actually type every message... 80% of the messages are forward messages (jokes etc) i have created a group and the messages are forwarded on on click...
I am doing a part time job, helping my friend on a website, help my dad on his software business... i have my exams starting from 18th too :D
I spend about 1 hour a day on messaging, talk to my gf for some time, then i keep receiving calls from a lot of people.. the end result i waste about 6 hours per day messaging and talking on the phone... i am gonna temporarily disconnect my connection from tomorrow till my exams get over... :)
PS:- messaging is a addiction.. i am badly addicted to it.. :(

Man sets texting record
Not that the guy has too much time on his hands or anything, but Deepak Sharma of Ludhiana, India, has gotten his name registered in the Guinness Book of World Records for sending 182,689 text messages a month, notes gizmo hub Engadget.
That would be, oh, something in the neighborhood of 6,000 messages a day, 253 an hour, 4.2 a minute or a new one every 14 seconds. Which leaves Sharma just enough time get in a quick wrist exercise every 12 hours or so.
Sharma aims to increase his messages to 300,000 in the coming month, according to Web News India, which notes that Sharma sends his rapid-fire messages to his relatives and friends, who purport to fully support his endeavour. Sharma's wireless operator, Airtel, reportedly sent him a 1,411 page bill.
No word on how Sharma supports his habit.

I was at onepoint a HUGE sms user (i had a n6820 just to text). I forked over the 20+ a month for my text and picture plan alone (US plans are ridiculous), but i've started to shift to GPRS based messaging becasue for text its just flat out better. A bunch of free apps out there but my favorite is netomat (visit http://m.netomat.net) and the beta is free to download. you're not limited to the 160 characters (which is great so you're not reading through 4 texts when you receive a long message) and pictures are sent faster and easier than MMS (which doesnt work here half the time).
unlimited data is now the same price as unlimited text and picture, and with data i can check my email and sync with my pc (i love my n6630). Does anyone else plan on shifting over the gprs based messaging? at work and within my group of friends we've all shifted, it seems to be much more efficient (and its easier to send online). Has anyone overseas tried this out? I can see it being the next big shift in messaging. (http://m.netomat.net). lemme know what you think.

I'm thinking sometimes. If it weren't for texting, will cellphones be like as popular as they are now?
I think that if texting did not exist, motorola will be number 1, samsung will be number 2, ericsson wouldn't have to partner with sony, siemens would still be like by itself, and nokia would probably be making more and more phones that has changeable faces only. :D

Hi brad, here's how I think of it.
Texting was the one thing that Nokia was very strong at (made famous by 3310/3390), so if texting didn't exist - motorola would still be number 1. Samsung, with their flip-style phones similar to motorola, would be number 2. Then ericsson, also not that big in texting, would have designed and sold follow-up models to their T68 and T39 series. They would've been like successful on their own - and wouldn't need the money of sony anymore. Same for siemens - which makes fantastic phones too. Nokia would be like number 3 or 4? and would be somewhat of a "novelty" brand because of their changing facias, wild designs (3300, n-gage), and ringtones.
It's like all im saying is that, nokia wouldn't be number 1 if it weren't for texting. So if texting wasnt famous - then nokia wouldn't be too.

Nokia would be like number 3 or 4? and would be somewhat of a "novelty" brand because of their changing facias, wild designs (3300, n-gage), and ringtones......It's like all im saying is that, nokia wouldn't be number 1 if it weren't for texting. So if texting wasnt famous - then nokia wouldn't be too.So when do we think that texting officially became big.
From Stephanie's point of view the 3310 era. But certainly I remember Nokia being huge when 5110 came around, and from what I understand the 2110 series was huge in sales terms.
BTW: Motorola #1 :) everyone would be walking around with Green and Purple striped razors now.........<shivers>. ..... what a hellish world we would live in :D

What a frightening thought  the v3i's not so bad. What's that material made off?
Texting was a little popular during the 5110 days...still remember the phillips fisio that displayed like 1 line of text and had a battery the size of your arm that lasted 30 seconds. (sarc)
Texting then was more between the people in the know... It wasn't big big like it was when the 3310 became a common a sight as people...calls were still the big thing then. At least in the UK.

I dont really agree...nokia also had a very good ui going for itself when most ui's were a pain the ass to use back in those days. it was quick worked damn well and never gave rf trouble.
In a way, what I said is related to what you're saying too. :D Nokia's texting menu IS part of it's UI. So if nokia's UI is considered "nice and user-friendly" among the others - it's also testament to how good their text messaging menu is.

The 5110 was very good in texting too. But using it can is a turn-off for some because it had rubber keypads (like the 6110 and 6150). Nokia corrected that in a later version called the 5110i. The 3310/3390 was very comfortable to use - the keypad had great response, and has a more 'exact feeling' than the 5110, in my opinion.

LOL why? Do you think I'd annihilate it because of my immense hatred? hahahaha I've warmed up to it a little, but I still can't stand it as a primary phone. I just like holding it...
If someone were to give me one, I'd sell it to get a Nokia S60 phone:p

I remember that phone - it was so cute because it was one of the smallest at that time. But I agree with miss stephanie - I think texting really took off when more and more people bought the 3310.

No, because I think you'll like it. We've already seen there are many aspects of it that you like :D
About selling it, if someone gave me a phone free, I'd sell it too.:D

No after a while I can't stand the Moto UI...some aspects of it I like, but just the limitedness of it all makes me claustrophobic:p
And referring to the topic, Moto IMO hasn't really helped SMSing cause there's so many steps involved in it...not like with Nokia that you can just type the message, pick the person, and press talk!

OK so its settled. The 3310's global domination paved the way for wide distribution thus popularity of text messaging thus popularity of phones.

SMS is popular here in the US, but I don't really like using it. AT ALL. If someone sends me a message I will call them back or ignore it.

I reckon it really all depends on if its pay as you go or contract and what deal your on. Cornwalls preety much packed with tourists and its hard for us locals to buy our own homes because everyone wants second homes here for holidays so we end up paying masses to live in our hometowns renting. I dont know many mates who can afford a good deal on contract so we end up with a pay as you go mobile and of course then it is cheaper to text. My sim cards 02 and you get so many free texts if you top up a certain amount. Hardly anyone here phones its cheaper by text last time I got a phone call was 2weeks ago but ive had loads of texts lol
