View Full Version : the "infamous" SX1

Just curious -- what do people think of the SX1 around these parts? Must-have fashionable piece of tech, or another bizarrely-styled Symbian phone?

Myself, I'm leaning towards a Nokia 6600 at some point, although the smaller size of the SX1 is tempting. I'll be anxious to read reviews when these phones are finally available. Whenever that may actually be!

I love the look of the SX1 and the position of the keys of course. Based on the S60 Nokia spec, they are very similar. This is the phone I want (or P810) if I dont get my early nVoy. Its been priced at expansys recently. Got my preorder in :)

I'm not familiar with the nVoy, so I looked it up. I gather is a MS Smartphone; but I don't see it listed at expansys.us.

I HAVE seen the SX1 listed there -- for a good $600USD!

Is expansys the best place to buy unlocked phones? It's the only source outside ebay that I've seen people use, which seems reputable. If pricey. :)

It's cute, but the keyboard in my opinion is in the realm of unusable.
Funky -yes, but a terrible design. One handed dialing would be impossible

Apart from the 6600, I think the best series 60 phone will be the Samsung D700.

Te SX1 might be nice, but its styling is too wierd (even worse than the 3650).

id go for the 6600 because the sx1 keys look a right pain. although the 6600 is a bit large for me - hope they bring out a smaller version of it v soon? (6610 or 6150 ?! guessing)

If only the 6600 had a touchscreen. It would be on my "must get" list

The 3650 kaypad isn't as bad as it looks. Have you guys tried one? It's actually fairly comfortable. Sadly, mine suffers the flaw I think Xpress-On phones all have, but I think the basic design works comfortably. (You can read my impressions (http://forums.mobileburn.com/showthread.php?postid=301#post301) if you're curious.)

The D700 looks a tad ugly to me. I'm not a big fan of flip-phones and its dpad didn't look as nice as a joystick would be. But I can see how it's smaller size is appealing.

That's why I think the 6600 seems like the best bet: non-flip and normal keys, and still smaller than my 3650. :)

(I saw some pics of the 6600, including an article I believe was hosted here at MobileBurn, and it looks nicely sized when held or compared to other phones.)

The main thing I like about the SX1 is it's sleek, slightly smaller size. People have raved about the stereo audio support, but I'm not sure I'd use one as an mp3 player -- I mean, it's a phone! :)

i think the SX1 will be another bad phone on the market just like the siemens S55.

i wouldnt say that the s55 was a bad phone, just not quite up to it on the quality side of things. i like the look and functionality of it - but hate the keypad!

bart

keypad, menu system, way of storing things, not much good standard sounds and backgrounds on the phone (remeber the S55 wasn't originaly made to be a colorscreen phone), battery isn't good when you use bluetooth and GRPS. there was this voice memo button on the right side, i kept pressing it everytime i was on a call! and for such a high price, there are alot of better phones on the market!

interesting, i didnt realise it wasnt originally supposed to be a colour phone.
i think the menus are good though, and i like all the shortcuts you can setup. this is what i missed on the t68.

what is the p800 like? isnt that expensive?

im not sure anything really lives up to what it costs.

I expected it to work fine for me - had high hopes for it, even. But it doesn't. The arc of buttons should go the other way, for one (like a frown, not a smile). That is the natural path your thumb takes.

That could be overlooked if the the phone wasn't so long, or there was more phone under the buttons to grip on to. As is, one-handed dialing is not all that secure since you are gripping onto the very bottom of the phone while trying to press keys also at the very bottom.

And why would you say that? The platform the phone electronics are built on is a color platform. The electronics are not based on the S45 series, they were designed outside of Siemens.

The nVoy uses its OS by Pogo-tech. Its proprietary.
Its not avail yet. But early adopters can get them through the program. www.pogomobile.com

I make regular trips to expansys.com and celluloco.com

Both great sites for factory unlocked phones :)

Thanks! I wasn't able to successfully access the pogo site when I did my search, and from the search results that turned up I assumed it was an MS Smartphone. My mistake. :)

Looks like a neat little device, especially for 'net-focused use... but I'll stick with actual phones, myself.

The SX1 has stereo audio (for the built-in MP3 Player), while the Nokia 6600 does not.

that's the only reason i'm not getting the 6600...
in fact, that's one of my greatest gripes concerning the 3650...that and the 'way too little' internal memory that causes all those Netfront and Opera browser crashes.

I think the SX1 will be the most high-tech 2.5G phone in the world once it is launched. Looks good, too.

It's not THAT great. The 6600 and P800 can both hold their own against it.

Maybe the P800, but not the 6600.:p

It seems that the SX1 may not be released in September afterall but early October. I am sure the SX1 will do well sales wise but I really think that if it was released sooner it would have done extremely well in the market place. From what I have read the delays happened because of all the problems they had with the battery and firmware. Can anybody shed some light on that at all?

Michael

My Siemens rep told me it was delayed. He didn't know any specifics.

Hi,
i wanted to by this phone since it was presented by siemens. Now, not loving my s55 any more, it's still not available.
And, thx to the gods above me, the e700 will be available shortly, so i changed my mind, decided to by a mp3-player (or use my ppc), and have a nice small phone (without antenna... bravo samsung).

Hm, i will lose BT, but i didn't use BT with my S55 at all. So i think the e700 is the perfect phone for me.

Feature wise, this phone has got it down pat - very impressive from Siemens. Personally, I find the phone attractive in it's styling, but usability would be questionable!

Again, like the 3650, the number positioning is strange. Not to say you wouldn't get used to it... in the end, it may be easier than a traditional keypad. Who knows! Tho a good point was made regarding one handed dialling. :p

i really hate the 3650s look and fell, but i think after a few days you can learn it...
the sx1 always needs both hands to do more than navigating through the menue...
i think this will be a big big problem (for me)

This is for the people who are waiting for the SX1 to come out and are interested in finding out more about the specs/features.

I found the Siemens SX1 user manual on the web. It's a PDF file so you will need Acrobat Reader to view it. You can either open it and view it or right click the link and pick Save Target As to save to your computer

There's no better opinion than what the source has to say!

Er, wait a minute...

But yeah, it will be nice to know. I'm very intrigued the the SX1. I don't know that I'd buy one (especially for $600+) but I'm definitely curious.

Infosyncworld has a new press release regarding Sendo's Series 60 smartphone release...looks like an SX1 killer (especially since it has a normal keyboard layout)

Na, I wouldnt agree there. Calling it out of date would be like calling the 6600 out of date. Plus the wee SX1 has a radio and MP3 player in it.

I thought the N6600 looked quite nice and a good size but i couldnt help thinking how plasticy it felt when i saw it in carphone warehouse.

Accoring to a well known and respected german web site, Siemens have solved all the bugs stopping it from being released and it should be available in limited numbers andy day now with a wide release in January :)
