The forums were hacked.

Yes, as some of you saw, the forums were hacked today (Feb 24th, 2005).

I restored from backup and upgraded to the latest version of the software. We lost 8 hours of posts, or so. That was the easy part.

I don't know what might have been compromised, though. I'll have to investigate a bit, just to be sure.

I didn't spend any time looking into that. Truth be told, I am not at home - I am working from a laptop at my girlfriend's place.

Not exactly the best place to be doing a lot of PITA work.

As to what will happen if they do it again, I am hoping that the new version of the software will prevent that. I had missed the past two upgrades (that came with security alerts) because I was on the road so much.

I suppose I'll have to give such things more priority in the future....

Most people do not back up anything these days and just rely on new patches to fix security deficiencies. :eek:

Yeah, I have pretty regular backups of stuff. The main site gets backed up hourly and I keep 7 days worth of stuff on a different machine in a different state.

Well, if anything it shows that because someone hacked it, the site must be pretty prevalent - in fact its very high up the Google rankings, so if there is a bright side to this it's that its a popular forum.
