i think motorola improved the most among all the phone makers by their effort to improve their camera resolution, phone design as well as screen resolution.
sony ericsson is second for their better-featured and more professional looking phones.
samsung still sticks with their conventional clams with a little twist.
nokia on the other hand, improves phone features but sadly the design (specially the keypads) sucked. the 6101 seemed cute but it was patterned after samsung clams.\
i particularly like motorola v8 SLR, the E1060 and the v6 PEBL. i just hope that motorola fixed their slow OS.
the SE K600 and Z800 are good competitors too.
if the nokia 6101 had at least a megapixel camera, then i would probably vote for it too.

Interesting question, I guess I'd shortlist the following:
Samsung SGH-Z500: the first sub-100 gram 3G phone that I know of, all in an E700 size case.
Motorola PEBL V6. OK, it's basically just a V620 but it's a real beauty, isn't it?
Motorola V360.. one you may have missed, but it's got TransFlash and an MP3 player all in a fairly low-end handset.
Nokia 6680. Not too shabby.
Sendo X2. I don't know if this is the lightest Symbian smartphone around. Probably.
Sony Ericsson K600: simply because it's an unfussy and practical 3G phone that will work well for 2G customers too.
I'll believe the E1120 and E1060 when I see them.. I certainly don't think we'll see the E1120 before 2006 given Motorola's problems in actually getting stuff like this to market.

Seing as how I despise Motorola and Sony Ericsson, I go for the Nokia 6680...small Series 60 with 3G capabilities all within a stylish package:D

to be fair, in jbenchmarks motorola has more phones in the top 20 than any other brand by far. have you used the e680, a780, or e1000?

z800 and k600, Both with great looks and for the k600, nice for its small size!
Smartphone wise, the 6680 just owns it. Finally a Nokia with video call capabilities :)

K600-Great 3G candybar design from Sony Ericsson
Z800
These were my favorites.

Yeah but the Z800 is hardly a new phone, it's a V800 that's been debranded (assuming we're talking SE Z800, not Panasonic!)
So other takers for Samsung? Their range is all over the place I know, a little bit of everything but I think the Z500 rocks
What it this thing with "X"s and "Z"s at the moment anyway? ;)

i've tried using motorola e398 and the RAZR, both we're slower than the average nokia phone, the 6630 was way faster than them. i specially didnt like the sms writing part of the 2 motorolas, it was really slow.

6681,X800, V8(megal droolage)
so far for 3G it would be the Z800 by SE. It is the one I wish I had. Yes I know that it is nothing more then the V800!

This is a quote from a post way up, but I just have to correct this person. Greenarcher hoped Motorola had changed THEIR OS. The A780 and the E680 run on Linux and the E1000 runs on Symbian. Certainly not Motorolas OS.
Just wanted to sort that out...

you haven't cleared it up. i'm fully aware that a780 and e680 run on linux. but i think you'll find that e1000 runs on a motorola OS - NOT on symbian. you're getting mixed up with a1000 which runs on UIQ symbian.
In no particular order:
SE K600 - Its neat lines, a pinnacle of japanese design.
Nokia 6680 - Excellent fully featured 3G Smartphone
Sendo X2

Sendo X2 - Instant MP3 Playback on an excellent series 60 phone.
Samsung D720 - I'd kill for it!!!! wanna try me?? huh huh!!?!
and who can forget the Nokia 7710, not i!! Its FULL arrival on these shores (UK) will make be a welcome change.
All said, its been an interesting show from all manufacturers, and i like it. Theres a good air of evolution in the mobile phone industry, it will be cool to see where it wil be the next two years.

Ew, to be honest, I don't like the X2...it seems so naked or blase. Like one of those Chihuahua dogs...small yet sort of on the ugly side. And I don't understand why they got rid of the flash that they had on the X!

To be honest, i prefer the X's design over the X2, but one cant waste one's breath over that, so meh!!
