Yes, it's true, the site will start to get run down if we don't get more moderators to assist the current ones.
I propose that people apply here for which parts they think they could effectively control (i.e. Nokia and Motorola Forums, Community Forum, etc.) with their reasons why they think they will make a good moderator. You can also nominate others. I shall then (time permitting), vet your profiles and previous posts and if I think it is suitable, will give you Mod access to that area. I cannot be around all the time, as is not possible for the other current mods. If powers are abused I will think nothing of stripping them, issuing bans and tracing the IPs (and I suspect I need never do any of these).
There is only a limited amount of time in the day so keep the posts concise. I'll check back here later on and attempt to get underway with this. I suspect about 5 more moderators is all we need for now, and I have a few good names, but I want to know who is up for it.
- Also, I'd like to add that even with more mods, reporting posts is still essential and can be considered almost a duty to regular board members, because moderators can and do overlook things.

I'd love to mod, I'm here like most of the time anyway, I think most of the off topic and flaming happens in general discussion, nokia and sony ericsson, so I'd love to help out in those areas.

You are one of the ones I was already considering, I just wanted it in firm writing for public consumption so that I could see the reaction from others. I am prepared to give you a shot at this. I will try and set up access in the next few minutes.
- To others, remember mods can overlap forums so more than one of you can control the SE and Nokia forums (which is probably necessary as most of the crap gets posted there).

Specifically which sections? I'd like to cover as many as possible so preferably not the ones shaheen is covering already, but I don't mind have 2 Nokia and SE mods as these are the most popular ones.

Ok, I'll give you a probationary period as a moderator of the whole forum. As I said to shaheen, people expect moderators to act differently so no unnecessary baiting, flaming, name-calling, provocation, etc. I'm sure it will be fine, I'm just putting it in writing for all to see.

hi there,
I'd also like to volunteer to be a Mod. I've been a moderator for several years now, on one of the local cellphone sites here (the phil), so I can say that I've had a lot of experience in being one.
.... and I'm also very active here at mobileburn. (I visit it everyday, 24/7).
check it out: http://bnctemp.proboards29.com/index.cgi
and this new one:

cheers!
Specifically which sections? Nokia is quite well covered now. I agree that you would make a good mod.
[I'm quite pleased that everyone who has applied has actually been on the list I had before - it's very positive!]

anyway, I'm familiar with Nokias, SE's and a few Siemens phones.... but not so with Motorolas and Samsungs. But I'll still try to manage those sections if ever I'm placed there.
thank you for considering me.

I don't think moderating has anything to do with technical skills and knowledges.

That has very much to do with the topic. But yes, I am disappointed.
I'm volunteering for beeing a moderator in the news submission forum. I think that's what I can handle. Maybe the lounge too...

Hey i would love to be a MOD! I would love to keep the Nokia and SE section neat and tidy! I think i can remove, move or maybe even edit posts if needed! I think no one has covered General phone discussion forum! Having said that i would love to keep the whole of Mobileburn Forums neat and tidy! I am here most of the time and read almost all the threads! I post less becoz i believe in quality over quantity! First few days i went for quantity and i posted a lot, These days i just try to help people around and post something interesting!
Reasons why i nominate myself as a moderator:-
Most part of the day i spend with Mobileburn's forums! And i visit MB every single day! Its like a routine now!
I read the all the posts and only post if i feel i can contribute to the thread!
And i promise i will keep the MB forums neat and tidy all the time!

i know i do not have too many posts but still i love to help people.
i am logged on to mobileburn throughout the day and i do check all the possible threads at this point..... I have more knowledge of mostly nokia and sony ericsson phones.

as comme said, why would you want to be a mod? Well yes u get more power and become godlike, but since u can't use it like u want, where's the fun? I still think that it's a food idea to make Comme a mod. why? Two reasons. 1, to spite him, by giving him responsibility adn making him use the Hours he wastes her every day for something good, and 2, he's here all day. And one question to comme: Don't you have work or school or something?

what is a moderator anyway? let's find out, shall we?
"moderate" from Random House:
1. kept or keeping within reasonable or proper limits; not extreme, excessive, or intense: a moderate price.
2. of medium quantity, extent, or amount: a moderate income.
3. mediocre or fair: moderate talent.
4. calm or mild, as of the weather.
5. of or pertaining to moderates, as in politics or religion. — n.
6. a person who is moderate in opinion or opposed to extreme views and actions, as in politics. — v.t.
7. to reduce the excessiveness of; make less violent, severe, intense, or rigorous: to moderate one's criticism.
8. to preside over or at (a public forum, meeting, discussion, etc.) — v.i.
9. to become less violent, severe, intense, or rigorous.
10. to act as moderator; preside. [1350–1400; ME < L moder€tus, ptp. of moder€r¨ to restrain, control, v. der. from base of modestus;see MODEST, -ATE1]— mod‚er•ate•ly adv.— mod‚er•ate•ness n. — yn.
MODERATE, TEMPERATE, REASONABLE imply the avoidance of excess, as in action, thought, or feeling.
MODERATE describes somethingthat is within reasonable or proper limits: a moderate amount of exercise.
TEMPERATE stresses the idea of caution, control, or self-restraint, esp. with reference to the appetites or emotions: a temperate discussion. REASONABLE suggests a limit imposed by reason or good sense: a reasonable request.
just my 2 cents.

(got this from another forum...)
For all aspiring members, this is for you.
Step 1, BE FIRM!
You may notice a lot of ramshackle forums where people can raise all kinds of hell. You need to make sure your small bastion of lunacy stays in the hands of the orderlies. If you see cursing, use that edit button. You can also give warnings for added zest. If he still doesn't listen, ban the fool.
Step 2, NEVER BACK DOWN!
"The man" may question some of your choices, namely those involving banning members who listen to Hooty and the Blowfish and name Liberace as a major life-influence.Don't listen! You've been chosen, hopefully, because you have good judgement. Therefore, it stands to reason that hey, good judgement isn't a come and go thing!
Step 3, RUN!
Upgrading to a new forum system may seem cool, but it isn't quite all it's knocked up to be. When you hear such events are going to transpire, run, don't walk to the nearest admin and get a list of all the email address you can find. Usually, it helps to also collect administrative phone numbers.
Step 4, SLEEP!
Moderators are like the middle-management of any company. They do work that could be done by administrators, but those busy administrators are busy doing administrative things, so it's left to you.
Following this example, it also stands to reason that middle-management, who performs duties of which nobody sees a point for but usually everyone needs, need rest.
As a member, you only need to be able to post. As a moderator, decision making is key, so I'd recommend the following formula to calculate hours of rest: (Seconds spent working * Size of rear end in KG) - Size of coffee mug
You could also multiply by 60, and then repeat to actually hit hours...
Step 5, USE YOUR POWER JUSTLY!
You have special, magical powers as a moderator, which can be used, or abused, at will.
I'd recommend using, by the way...
No longer can you let injustices stand.
For example:
Ge0rgie_Rul3z enters.
He claims that the blast of radioactivity which ended the life of Spock was clearly sub-atomic, at best. Can you let this fool live? :D :D
Have a nice day everyone, cheers!

I'd be happy to mod the SE section if needed, I'm a mod on M-R, and I admit I've neglected this forum lately, but I'm going to start using it again. :)
I guess I'm at a disadvantage because not many people know me here unless I've spoken to you on any one of Mobile9, Esato, UCSE, SE-Central, GSM-Arena, Hofo etc., and because I don't have a high post count compared to most people (I don't consider that to really mean anything, others do).
But I like to think that I communicate concisely, try to act fairly, and that I don't allow my brand to preferences cloud my judgements or anything like that. I'm a member of many forums (only really actively on Esato, UCSE and M-R), so I've got quite a wide scope for gathering new information which I'd be able to relay here, but I guess I don't really have to be a mod to do that, heh.
So uhm, yeah - I'm probably a bit late, but just so that you know that the offer is here if you need it. :)

I would absolutely love to be a moderator. I have pretty good knowledge about Series 60, at least moreso than my phone-ignorant peers, and I keep up with all the latest news so I'm usually up to date. However, since I know you have too many Nokia moderators, I'd like to moderate the Mobile Networks forum, specifically the USA subforum. I live in the US and so I have experience with the carriers and most of all, I can understand and help people personally with their issues. Please count me in as a moderator for the USA Mobile Networks forum...

ok, now we have more moderators..... how bout asking some wwith very good info source to help provide news and pics and infos and stuffs? You dun have to let them post those on the front page or anywhere on this site, just give them a special 'News' thread where others couldn't post, so that forum members/visitors can always go there to check out the news and stuffs. This is better than people posting news or informative links in threads of the forums (and always in different threads/locations) which makes it hard for users to review back. :)

hi there michael and deviant,
um... I'd like to make a few suggestions, if I may.
first thing you could do is to put a "moderator's lounge"... a forum wherein only the mods can enter, only the mods can read, and only the mods can post. That way, you guys can talk among yourselves, on what to do... on particular issues in the forum. You can talk about members, what to do in some areas of the forums (like if you want to make changes), and discuss among yourselves what to do in case a mod gets "slightly off" his job. Having this lounge - FREES you from having to create a "super-mod". Coz the other mods can just comment on each other - thru this lounge. Like if one post needs to be deleted or edited for example - or if one mod is showing favorites, or is being highly emotional, this "lounge" will be the forum to post those comments on.
another thing... maybe you could merge the "mobile tech" and "connectivity issues" into one? Also, maybe include the "phone modding" too? Those 3 departments are seldom visited anyway, having just one mod in charge of those, would make it so simplier to the visitor to visit, and the mod to moderate.
3rdly, maybe the "gossips and rumors" should be merged with the "general phone discussion" department? I noticed that some posts there are just being duplicated and discussed again in the GPD. So maybe, if we simplify things and merged them - then people will have less departments to visit. One or two mods for that should be okay.
last, um... instead of having "supermods" to moderate everything else, why not make all the mods like that in the first place? That way, no one is solely in charge of the noka or SE departments - but rather all of them are. This way, those mods who are not familiar with the other brands... like samsung or mot, will also learn a thing or two, and will be better able to help the members.
.....
note: In some of the forums that I'm a mod in...... we've already tried that "one or two mods per department" routine. And aside from being confusing to the novice member, some problems are sometimes left unchecked. Some facts , for example, being in one forum - is sometimes different from the facts being said in another. I just hope MB doesn't fall into those same problems.
cheers!
Memzee

No, a SuperMod can mod the entire forum, so let's say if something happens in the Nokia forum, and none of the Nokia specific mods are online, the SuperMod can do what has to be done. The SuperMods don't 'watch over' the other mods, they just have access to a couple more features, and can't moderate the entire forum, instead of just one section.

yeah, but don't we have that already? In the form of Michael and Deviant? They can mod over the entire forum if they want, right?
anyway, what I was saying is that... if there's going to be a super-mod, why not make all of them that way? So they can help each other out, and correct each other out too. On the other hand, if there's not going to be a super-mod, then this lounge would be perfect for the "brand-specific" mods to discuss site issues, and changes, and suggestions.
Anyway, I think toocool was already made a super... congrats!

difenbaker, there are 3 different levels of hierarchy; Admin > Super Moderator > Moderator.
Moderators can edit threads/posts, and move, close or stick threads in their respectively assigned sections of the forum.
Super Moderators can do all of that, regardless of which section of the forum, and also ban users.
Admin can do all of that, add announcements, and give IP bans.
AFAIK.

yeah, but don't we have that already? In the form of Michael and Deviant? They can mod over the entire forum if they want, right?
anyway, what I was saying is that... if there's going to be a super-mod, why not make all of them that way? So they can help each other out, and correct each other out too. On the other hand, if there's not going to be a super-mod, then this lounge would be perfect for the "brand-specific" mods to discuss site issues, and changes, and suggestions.
Anyway, I think toocool was already made a super... congrats!
cheers!
Thanks difenbaker, i want ur help too mate!

Diffenbaker: We do have a mod only section on the forums. The reason why everyone cant be a super mod is because then everyone will just mod the boards they like and then others will go unoticed. The way it is now, the Super mods overview all the boards to make sure nothing slips.
Toocool: Welcome on board. Itll be good working with you!

Apparently the changes I made yesterday have gone unchanged so I'll fix that tonight (in case any of the new mods are wondering).

i would like the suggestion of merging the boards, which will make it less confusing and eliminates double posts. But i kinda disagree with the mods forums thingy~ thats unfair to us Registered Users. Please just chat amongts urselves in P.M. discuss in PM. I dun believe in some kinda forum boards where i clicked and it says "Moderator Access only" if it's gotta be that way, better make it invisible to users. :)

DEViANT, Any news? I'll be a super mod if you want me to, I just suggested Gossip and Rumours because no one else had, because I know a bit about it, and because there are already two super mods (I think).

I'm still considering requests just been very busy recently. My concern with appointing more mods is that we will have more mods than regular users! I will bear all requests in mind but may not make any more changes for a while. I'll see how the current situation lies - I'll be needing feedback from users to see how good a job the mods are doing - but all seems well.

I'll see what I can do, but there are some quirks with the Forum Manager I'm still trying to get my head round.

Hi all
Ok so i havent been at the forums for a while, but I am back now, in the lounge section at least ;) I think I will be a good mod of that section, I can handle the sort of flaming and bantering that generally occirs in that section.Let me know, if you guys are keen for me to mod :) unless you already have a lounge mod.

And I'd love to help you out in the GPD and Sony Ericsson and also bluetooth section. And anyways how are things going? I would not be wrong if I said "WE'VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY!"

I'm not a mod, but I'm very good with sites, and even though your site has had a recent design I think it needs to be cleaned up. I'm not good with jsp but I'm very good with php and mysql.

Well, most of the Registered users here want to be a MOD.. but not everyone can be a mod becoz first of all there are not many regular posters around here.. There are about 4 to 5 Mods.. plus 2 or 3 Super Mods..
Even users with 2 or 3 posts want to be mods :D whether u r a cell phone pro or u have been selling phones for 8 years doesnt guarantee that u will be a good mod..
Mr cidknee, we are here to keep the forums clean and tidy.. u just enjoy the site..

how many mods/super mods do we actually have at the moment?
how many are still active?
I wish msn groups have that kind of heirachy, v useful to get other people to keep websites in order. one time i made people assistant managers and loads of stuff/members got deleted!
what privilages would a mod expect, i.e. what extra options can they have?
Is there a set guidelines/protocols for moderators, what they can and cant do, and what theyre expected to do?
thanks.
