Is it just me or is Nokia not listening....all these HUGE phones. There is a big market (pun) for a small phone that has great ringtones, decent display, speakerphone, bluetooth. By small I mean 6100 small. Small. Just one? Cmon Nokia.

Well, they're doing great with it's smallest smartphone to date! Besides, if you want miniature, go to Panasonic...

There's very little profit in small phones. They've already cut down the prices and now they release technicaly advanced phones so that they can make more money. And technicaly advanced phones tend to be a little bigger than other phones.

well it's a paradox, small phones with advanced features and big screen? Perhaps a foldable screen would achieve that.

6100-type small fone will be released I am sure, even for 3G networks. They will probably have basic functions.

Is the 6101 too big for you?

Well after i owned 2 6600's i dont really care about the size of a phone. As long as it is rich in functionality i am happy with it.

mmm.... from the way it looks on that photo, it's not that big at all. I figure that it's about the same size as the 7610. Or the 6630 - maybe a wee bit taller since it has to have space for that other cam.

but if you meant, a series 60 device that's as small as a 6100...that's technically impossible for now I guess.

cheers!

One way to achieve the effect could be:

Make a phone the size of a N6230, though allow the entire front to be a wide screen (similar *ratio* to N9500 - wide aspect) put controls on either side, and a small D-pad on one end (or both for function) perhaps touch screen and call it a day with S60.

I will make a mock up :)

Yup at this point its difficult to make S60 phones smaller because of the screen size, and processing hardware.

quite true and its frankly maddening if hardware is powerful and you have an extra cramped keypad to type on

Yeah everyone complains about small screens and keypads and then when the manufacturers make bigger phones, they complain as well.

Its always a loose loose situation on this front. hence nokia does the nos game phones of all sizes weight to suit everyone.

samsung sticks to its tested tried flashy clamshells with good polyphonics knowing it will sell well

all good points about the s60 phones, but at least in the US 3G is a mirage for a while. I know some (myself included) who would pay more for a small s40 phone with a decent feature set. Since all the components are available, the phone would be relatively inexpensive. Then Nokia could add on an obscene profit

yea a 6230 type phone with 3g and megapixel cam with an albeit larger screen would do wonders. for nokia's bottomline

Jayesh: Im referring to the size of the phone.

I dont think Nokia will bring out an S40 3G phone, its probably too difficult to implement it in to the OS unless they want to release a S40 v3.

actually the 7600 and 6650 are s40-ish... it's called s45, but it's based on series 40, so it's already been done.

ah well you got a point. I think it can be done by nokia if they really worked on it. THere is a definite market for this .

I think they trying to move away from S40 so that they can begin the mix of S60 and S90 = S80. Before they can introduce S80 as their main OS they first need to educate people in S60 so thats why they trying to push so much S60 out. Also companies like Panasonic, Siemens and now Samsung are also embracing S60 phones, which could ultimately become an across the board OS so that no matter what brand phone you use, you'll still know how to use it.

Yup at this point its difficult to make S60 phones smaller because of the screen size, and processing hardware.

I actually saw a concept phone design, think it was a year and a half ago... proposed by the same people who made the Neonode N1, about a phone with a "virtual screen". It's like they took the idea of the "virtual keyboard" a step further - and made a phone that projected it's screen on a small flat surface (or a hand).

It's cool coz the screen of the phone itself - the "projector", is small. Like the face of a penlight flashlight. So if they added small keys to it on the other side, it would be nice. There were several drawbacks to this, however. First, is that you'd always need 2 hands to operate it, one for screen to project on, and the other one to type on the keys. Second, is that, it's not colored. And 3rd, it eats up a lot of battery.

cheers!
