i got a call from my dealer to day morning (30th dec) saying that he has got the 7710 for sale. it was officially launched by nokia. only a few 7710 were available. it cost me rs.29k which is approximately US $650.
IF YOU REMEMBER, I WAS THE ONE WHO TOLD YOU PEOPLE THAT IT IS GOING TO BE AVAILABLE IN THE LAST WEEK OF DECEMBER AND THERE WERE PEOPLE WHO WOULDNT BELEIVE ME.
MY REVIEW
after i opened the box, there was MY 7710. what a beautiful phone it was.
for some people this phone may seem big. but for me, after having the 9500 and testing the 7700, this was a gem.
INBOX- the box contains the folowing things.
1. the 7710
2. battery
3. 128mb mmc
4. pouch
5. nokia fashion handsfree
6. data cable
7. a stand of keeping the phone
8. extra stylus
9. charger
10. cd and manual
BUILT-the phone seems quite solid. no loose battery cover on this phone. the keys too dont shake. this phone is quite sturdy.
the phone takes about 15-20 seconds to be switched on.
SCREEN-the screen is one of the best ones i have seen. the screen is much better than the 9500 one. the colors are great. the screen is sharp.
i will emphasis on the features of this phone.
WEB- the phone has a full html browser. i surfed a few pages on it. they look great. i was able to check my email very quickly. the speed is great. i tried it on the 9500 too, but pages load faster on the 7710.
CAMERA- wat can i say about the camera. it is one of the best ones i have seen. i would say the photos were better than the 6630 ones.
MUSIC PLAYER- i was speechless when i heard an mp3 on it. the speaker is so loud and even at full volume, the song can be heard very clearly. the speaker was so loud that everyone at a crowded mall could hear the thing and i aint jokin.
RADIO- i have no clue what exactly is visual radio. the phone gets a frequency almost anywhere. the sound is again as loud as in the music player.
images clicked can be tampered upon. you can crop, zoom and do all sorts of things.
bluetooth is normal like the other nokias. i have no problems connecting with other phones or headsets like jabra bt200 and nokia hs-4w.
I DONT HAVE MUCH TIME AS I HAVE TO RUSH TO MY CLASSES.
in short, this phone is a 9500 - keypad/keyboard + radio + megapixel cam + a lot more.
in my mind, this phone is way way better than my 9500.
i will provide pics for it later as i am a little busy.
please ask any question and i will answer them for you.

2.there is no t9 in this phone.
3.the screen is on eof the best ones available in the market.
the cam is not vga, its a megapixel camera. its quality is great.
4.its surely better than the p900. so you yourself can compare

I don't understand how you people can switch phones on a daily basis or so. I tried that once, but it'd be such a hastle to make my phones have the same appointments I'd put on the other one or just not having the phone that can do a specific thing I need. And how do you guys get the money to buy all these phones?! Some of you are just in college...isn't that money going towards college?!

guys ..... i need to decide ..... do i sell my p910 and buy this 7710?
if i were you i would do it. I owned the P910 for a month, the first few days i was in love with it, but then the magic wore off and grew to hate it everyday. it was mainly the flip, camera and the layout of the OS that got on my nerve. also im not a touch screen typa guy, so i bought the S700(which kindda sucks) then settled on the Nokia 6630....and so far im am so Fuk'n imopressed by it :). but if i were in your place(And i know how the P910) feels, i would get rid of it and get a Nokia 7710. btw, i sold my P910 for a mobile store shop for a very good price.
i would also like to note that one of the biggest things i hated anout the P910 was that stupid jog dial knob!!!! it was so horrible, i would have prefered a direction pad like every other cellphone in this world, and the 7710 has that for short and simple tasks.

i cnnot tell the difference between the P900 screen and the P910. also, i heard that it's only in 262k mode when displaying pictures in full screen mode. The rest is all 65K screen like.

i heard that it's only in 262k mode when displaying pictures in full screen mode. The rest is all 65K screen like.
hahah~~ dat would be a technological marvel if they can do it.
For others:
Dun misunderstood P9's they do demand a hefty price, but dat doesn't mean they're some performance beasts, or a swiss knife with alot of sharp edges, to me, P910's camera is crap, screen is rubbish (due to low resolution) and speed is bull****. What we're going after (P9's users) is the form factor and portability for such a thing, i still haven't met another touch-screen device offering such usability, for one handedness; definitely it couldn't be compared to those normal phones, but speed of operating? not the thing's processing speeds but to set an appointment, tasks, then switch to typing messages in flip close or dial a number and so on...... it's VERY BALANCED. Best of both worlds.
And of course 7710's speaker, screen, camera excels dat of P910. (even K700 does excel over P910)
My advice to sammy, give it a try since u've used P900 ..... i've used P900 too, and when i switched to 910, i'm kinda bored too (thought of getting the cool S700) then there's one day i happen to be listening to mp3, browsing in mobileburn and chatting in MSN all at the same time wit my P910..... i decided to not get the S700........ :p
hope u liked the 7710.....i would say it's abit weird but it's one hell of an entertainment device.. softwares.. do not worry, they'll come out sooner or later since it's a Nokia.
@commedecargons
re: P910, you forgot to mention that it is the only Smartphone that can cope with multiple BT connections, such as a BT GPS & BT headset at the same time. Also the battery life on the P910, as on the P900, is fantastic. However, the Pxxx range of Smartphones are not really that good for watching videos (MP3s on the P910 sound better than on the P900 if you use quality headphones), and this is where I hope the 7710 will shine. But remember the Nok 7710 has a large screen and that will eat the battery. I am also hoping that developers make use of the large screen for developing sophisticated PIM apps like Agendus for Palm OS.

On exactly the same thread in M-R review also :D
@commedecargons, the 9500 and 7710 both have PIM and Office apps in common. They are both communications devices (both have Edge and GPRS and web browsers). So it is possible to compare the usability and performance on the two devices in these areas (and remember the 7710 can probably support the Nokia BT keyboard). For me, the real-estate of the screen is a key issue for viewing lots of PIM data/office documents/web sites - I would be interested in knowing what the compromise is between on-screen virtual keyboard input and keyboard input for using and viewing.

rohan,
Congrats on your new toy !! :D At least I have someone that I can compare notes here. Any glitch so far ? I have one still persisting. Have u tried set an alarm and then switch the device off ? When the alarm comes off (when the device is still in off mode) what will happen if you press the "stop" button ? By right, it should stop there and then and the screen would die down bcos the phone is still off. But mine is behaving differently, where instead of dying down, the screen will stay lighted in bright blank white colour, like hanging. No matter what u press, it will stay like that until u take out the battery. Have u experienced that ?

Hello Rohan, thanks for the info on your new phone.
Could you tell us how you actually hold the phone when making phone calls?
Do you hold it sideways like you would with an N-Gage, or do you hold it like a regular phone?
If you hold it as a regular phone, which side faces your ear? The side with the screen, or the side with the camera?
U hold it like a regular phone, and if u see the posted pictures of the 7710, u will see the 2 tiny holes on the right side which is the ear piece.

Hi Manburg & Rohan123, I am very interested in buying this 7710 but it has yet to be launched in S'pore. So before it's official launch here, I would like to post some questions regarding the phone so as to be able to make up my mind to buy or not to buy:
1. Have you tried to install ogg codec into the phone so as to be able to listen to ogg format songs?
2. Is it possible to install 'Smartmovie' player into the phone so as to watch movies that are smaller in size?
3. Can you watch divx movies on the phone?
4. Rohan123, since u have the 6630, comparing the speed of the processor in 7710, is it much slower in doing the samilar kind of stuffs with 7710 than on the 6630? I know the 6630 has an improved processor compared to my 7610 so I was just curious.
5. Of the 90mb RAM space in the phone, how much is available to us?
6. Can the 7710 last the whole day by just using it to listen to songs?
7. Is it possible to install Series 60 softwares into the phone?
The reason why I am seeking answers much related to listening of music is because I am thinking of using it to replace my broken iPod. Since this phone is basically an all-in-one phone, I was curious of it's stamina since much of it's specs are known on the web. As I am using the 7610, I am very curious as if whether I can re-use most of the softwares for the Series 60 on the 7710. Hope to hear from you guys soon. Thanks a million! :D
ps: By the way, anyone of you here in the forum know when S'pore will officially launch the 7710??

1.i have not tried a ogg file. i do not have a ogg file. neither do i have a converter
2.smartmovie is installable on the 7710. i got it installed from my dealer. movies can be viewed on full screen
3.divx movies cannot be viewed
4.the 6630 and 7710 run on different operating systems. but the 6630 is faster than the 7710
5.user gets a total of 88mb for usage
6.buddy, an IPOD cant last the whole without charging, how can the 7710.
7.s60 softwares cannot be installed as this phone runs on s90.

Hi Rohan123,
Thanks for the insight. With regards to the battery lastingness of the 7710 on playing songs, I was just wondering if it could last around 8-9 hrs, that's all. Anyway, thanks again. I think I will definitely get this phone then. Even though it costs that much...

I WANT THIS PHONE!
WHEN...(STESS ON WHEN, NOT IF)
I WILL HAVE MANY REDUNDANT CHRISTMAS PRESENTS (iRiver h320, fontopia headphones, cybershot cam :() well not redundant, but they wont be as used as much. ...
BUT GOOD! (not for parents though)..This maybe the multimedia/phone/work tool i have been looking for.
I HAVE ONE QUESTION. WHAT IS THE MAX MEMORY THIS WILL TAKE? It better be somethin big otherwise i mite need the 20g hard drive on the iriver (for dictaphone, recording notes in class << V useful! you dont have to write anything in class, unless they write stuff on the board, then u just take pics!)..I AM unsure bout mmc memory capacity, because many people are giving different answers.

I have tested a 512MB MMC and that works okay. The spec say 512MB is the max but I can't believe this as the 9500 can be used with 1GB MMC and the spec says it will support 2GB MMC.

thanks jah,
yeah, i thort that too! 6600 takes 1gb and im sure thats not meant to either!
I love that nokia stuck with MMC. even though its bigger, its so easily available and at the price that wont make your eyes water.
I think 1gb would be ok. I would need a dictaphone app that could record in mp3///argh too complicated. Ill just bring my iRiver. its crisp...SO crisp. cANT BELIEVE i considered leaving it behind for a phone MP3...how silly! and for a nokia headset! how dumb! AND the Iriver plays videos too! and its got so much memory! like 20gb, thats like every simpsons show and more! (at 220x176 resolution, divx conversion rate 5.00)
OMG...WHY DO I WANT THIS PHONE AGAIN?
..ahh...well xmas pressies wont be redundant, ill just bring everything in my bag or some reinforced combat trouser.
TECHNOLOGY IS SO FUNKY.

How would u know that the software version is pre-released?
You will know that when the European version of the 7710 get released. Nokia-Asia sometimes releases phones before Europe to test it with users, and then they release it with another final version of it. That happened with couple of phones like the 3650.

i may be selling some of my phones to some people in dad's office. i dont want to have so many phones now.
just some really good ones
hi rohan...sometimes after reading ur extravagantly ornamented reviews and previews and quotes i really really wonder what do u eat???mobiles or food...
i think u own more mobiles than the nokia company itself.are u interested in gifting a 7710 to somebody? i wont mind...
anyways bye..(i'm really jealous)where do u live??
hey, can anyone post a pic of the 7710 with the on-screen keyboard... and also, does the 7710 have the security feature of password protecting folders and files?
News is out that the Series 90 will be discontinued, and new devices will have a more advanced Series 60 OS...
and with only 40,000-50,000 units of the 7710 gonna be commercially released worldwide, looks like buying the 7710 is not a smart idea due to the probable lack of software and applications for it?

where did you hear this? discontinuing of series 90 already? that was quick! Nokia should have gone with UIQ instead.

i played around with a 7710 a few days ago ......
1) the phone is terribly slow ...
2) the screen is nice ... but the colors look bloated in sunlight ...
3) talking on the phone and keeping it in your pocket is a pain ....
4) the plastic has a very cheap shine to it .... this thing is designed for "kids"

yes its true, series 90 is going to be rolled into series 60. the new 3g video call phones form nokia like the 6680 are going to have the new ui which is going to be the series 60/90 hybrid with the new 3d menus, high resolution screens, and maybe even ccd cameras. i still think this phone is going to be sick. There will still be many, many third party apps once this phone is released world wide.

jah...great review man. i really want this phone, hopefully nokia WILL offer the us 850 version......
jah thanks for that.... but seriously, if the 90 series is gonna be discontinued, u think its a wise thing going for the 7710 knowing that application availabilty for the phone is gonna be at a minimal and u have to make do with the pre-installed stuff only....
still an impressive mobile, but knowing the fact that the 90S OS is gonna be no more..feels awkward buying it...

I have read that the Nokia 9500 is able to send and receive fax, but I am not sure with the Nokia 7710. Would you or somebody help me test the fax send and receive function on the Nokia 7710 please.
I would like to purchase a Nokia 7710, but first I have to make sure that the Nokia 7710 is able to send and receive fax. The eMail-to-Fax and Fax-to-Email services would be a solution if Nokia or a third party company will not be able to release the Fax software for the Nokia 7710 in the near future or future.
From these following web sites, if I am not mistaken, I read that the Nokia 7710 is fax capable:

the fact that they are rolling the two together does not mean this phone will not have awesome support. keep in mind this is nokia's crown jewel...the thing has not even officially been freakin' released yet...and nokia will make good on it. applications WILL be there...but this phone comes pretty strapped out of the box...everything but pdf support...i say only time will tell.

you bet .... we need optical zoom and ccd camera lenses. beyond that .....we need better batteries than can handle these babies. I for one am finding the 6630 and its ilk a let down on this front.
We need better battery life without comprimising on the weight. Nokia needs to switch over to li-polymer and improve it from there.

no i didnt mean like the word ilk= refers to its kind /class literal meaning
Type or kind
marwan, for example on ur PC, u have a pic that is 1600x1400, and ur screen resolution in 800x600, so when u view the pic, u have to scroll up/down, left/right to view the actual sized pic... so in the 6630, can u view a bigger pic than the screen size?
marwan

i will try that when i go home. so you mean if the 6630 can show a certain part of the picture and u have to scroll to the rest of it? ...i think you can do that by zooming to a pic, then scrolling to the sides. I did that with my old 7610.
anyways, im just wondering, why is that so important?
It's just that if u do transfer such an image to the phone, u can view it at full resolution without reducing size...
plus, a basic question, what was the charging period for the first charge of the 6630?

Im not sure how motivated people will be to make programs for it...the 7710 is the only device running series 90, right?
now that we know that the 90 series is murging into the 60 series, and the 90 series will be out of use, anyone here have any info whether the 7710 could be upgraded with the new OS? if so, then again the 7710 could be a big seller...

Software upgrade from Symbian Series 90 UI to the new user interface will be cool but i don't think its possible. By the way wat is the new series upgrade known as is it series 90 i or something. I don't know why they have made this series again. After cancelling 7700 why have they made 7710 with the same series.
Vicky

To clear the garbage stock of N 7700.
@mumbaifans
Nokia, like any other company, re-vists its strategy. Now as far as I understand the 7700 was to be Nokia's first foray into a new area for mobile phones; the area of multimedia devices. The 7700 and 7710 is capable of supporting mobile video broadcasts and has a very high res screen. Now what happened was that once the project for the 7700 had started and changed direction, ie 7710, Nokia decided that they had too many Symbian platforms and this was causing developers a lot of extra overhead in supporting a number of systems. It seems that the 7710 was already in the sales pipeline when there was this change in strategy. As Vicky says, they need to sell the 7710 to recoup their investment (or part of the investment). I think the 7710 is a very good device with a friendly UI. Like any new device it will have a few faults that early adopters will discover and hopefully will get fixed in firmware upgrades.
mumbaifans
01-19-2005, 12:36 PM
If Nokia is selling their already done investments and if developers will not make softwares for the ending series 90 fone 7710 than what happen to people who have already purchased this fone or is planning to buy this fone. If 7710 is made and sold only because they want to recoup their investment than its really not worth. I think the users of 7710 will use it only for media calling and sms purposes as no softwares are available for it.
@mumbaifans
www.epocware.com have planned to develop s/w for the 7710 and other companies will do so soon as Series 80 and 90 are not that different.
I was trying to say Nokia's view was that there were too many platforms. But in the short term I think the 7710 will be very popular because the h/w and s/w package is good and the price will also be good (when supply reaches reasonable levels). Every person I have shown my 7710 has been impressed by the resolution of the display.

Its good to know that developers have finally planned to develop softwares for this fone. Will Nokia stop manufacturing fones for this series , is it just a rumour or it was said by Nokia that they have stop this series. Do you think its worth buying this fone at this price. Whats the price at your place.
@mumbaifans
the 7710 is the first and last publicly available Series 90 device. The 7700 was available for industry people to test. The capability of the Series 90 (multimedia) will be incorporated into an expanded and more flexible Series 60.

Hi Rohan,
I keep on hearing that the 7710 is huge, and after viewing ur pics, I believe this. But does it really feel very bulky? My mom wanted to upgrade and she was absolutely amazed to see the 7710. Also, how's the Series 90 interface?
On another note, do u stay in the Concorde Towers at Thakur Complex. I saw one of ur pics in which the new twin towers were shot. Cool, I stay in Yogi Residency, a new 20 storeyed tower at Yogi Nagar and I can see ur building.

i am very happy with my 7710. Even with its default software this does all the jobs. it sync contact, schdules,to-do etc., it has spearsheet for tracking expenses and other stuff, it has camera, video recorder, video player, mp3 player, voice recorder and what not !!!!, for people who feel phone is bluky get the bluetooth like jabra, this will make you look cool and you can also talk properly without having to hold down phone. or get hands free.
best thing about this phone is this phone is unique and sure turns many heads.

I think its not that big at all. In one of the pics posted, the 7710 is compared with the P900, looks OK to me. Its just like maybe 3 cm bigger... Also, Rohan, the pic called 'homescreen' or sumthing, is that what you leave the phone as? There isnt like wallpaper, etc??? Coz I am planning to get this phone next month... Unless Nokia comes up with another touch-screen phone....
whn nokias' 1st series 60 phn camera phn d 7650 was launched thr were a lot of similar speculations & v all know whr series 60 is 2day
d 7710 is series a blend of d series 60 & series 90 platforms as announced by nokia
like jah said d 7700 was not discontinued, it was never meant 2 b sold of d shelf but only 4 corporate bulk orders
bout d 50 phns tht shaheen says well, nokia has also made phns like d 7600 & d 7280 cigarette lighter so if v take such phones in2 consideration thn v might c 50 phns
tell me shaheen, would u rather have 10 good phns or 50 crappy models???????
lets not get in2 comparing manufacturers atleast nokia has d b***s 2 make innovative phns
nokia phns startng wth 7 r known as d fashion series, 7650, 7210, 7600, 7610, 7700, 7260, 7270 etc. thus these phn will alwys have innovative looks
stop enumerating wht ur phn cant do, instead explore & c wht it can do
