I crossed over to JB, a city in southern Malaysia today for some shopping and guess what I found. A Nokia dealer is selling the 7710 for RM2799. about USD737. I thought it was a mockup and it is the real thing.....I had in my hands.......wow.... It is not even in Singapore yet. Can ppl report the sighting of 7710 in your vicinity........Pricing tooooooo :p
Its one cool handset.......it felt better than the SE910. Gosh I thought I was going to get myself the 6630........I am so perplexed now..........HELP................................. .............................. I dunno what candy(hp) to choose.....there are so many, so scary...........

7710 would be an option if it had portrait mode as well. i hate the ngage like hold only feeling. requires 2 hands too much

Shaheen, just keep the dough to yourself ...and others, pls don't bet with him, bcos he'll win  . I can confirm FOR NOW that it supports landscpae only. That's why Nokia calls it - a widescreen experience. :)
marwan

widescreen(landscape) is better, i don't see the big deal with portrait mode!
shaheen

i wana use 1 hand
Manburg
12-27-2004, 10:29 PM
Of course if you wanna snap a pic using only one hand, you can do that with your left hand bcos you can use your left thumb to press the capture button (the 4 way d-pad) But I would advise you against doing that, bcos you'd want the firmest and shakeless hold when you're snapping, otherwise the pix isn't the best, just like any other camera for that matter :)
marwan
12-27-2004, 10:35 PM
you have to use 2 hands to operate the P900/P910 when the flip is open, so i dont see the big deal with the whole landscape/portrait crap!

After using it for 3 days, I'd say that it is not intended for those who insist on using one hand only. You'd be required in most cases to use both hands, but it seems very easy for me although this is the first time I'm using such a model (I've never owned a PDA or anything like it). B4 I used it, I was having second thought about being physically able to hold the device in one hand and using the stylus with the other, looking at the landscape mode with the size and weight. But voila! It's not a problem at all, even for a lefthander like me.

A sample picture with a reduced resolution (from 1152 x 864 to 680 x 460) snapped by a 7710 using the out-of-box setup. I didn't tweak the device, just whiz out and snap. You judge it (FYI, it was raining when the pic was taken, but wasn't visible)

Manburg,
The snapshot looks impressive for a 1MP cam. Where did u purchase the 7710? Is it a zitron or AP set? It is rumoured to be officially released in M'sia together with the 6630. Good buy dude.

congrats man, could you please post pictures of your 7710 compared to other devices(pref mobiles phones). Also how is the interface? and is the phone fast? or does it have to load a few seconds to open application and stuff? also are there any applications out for it at the moment?
thanks!

Ramesh,
You can find it at Sg Wang/BB Plaza/Low Yat. Or you can go to KLCC, IOI Mall Puchong, Pertama or the Mall (at least those are the places that I went b4 finally made the decision) Anyway, the cheapest is of course the former. It's an ori set, distributed by Avaxx (not Zitron), retailing for RM2799. I got it at RM2680.
6630 is yet to be officially released. You can get the AP set from RM2500 to RM2800. I refrain from getting that. If you want to burn that amount of money, it's not worth getting an AP, thinking you can save RM100 or RM200.
Here's another one :)

Marwan,
Wow, so many questions  I thought you're busy manipulating your 6630 ... :D About the interface, whaddaya wanna know ? For me it's ok, but I'm not that qualified to fairly judge it bcos I didn't own any other device in the same class. Fast ? Yep, you can tap it (stylus or fingernail ;) and it'll straight away respond. But the startup (when u switch it on from off) is a bit long, not less than 5 second. It will also lag a bit when retrieving pix from Images, where u put the mode in thumbnail, especially with large no. of pix. Anyway that's to be expected, even a PC may behave in such a way.
It has frozen on me a couple of times, especially if you put all the images, sounds, video in the device. Better to put in MMC (128 bundled). Maybe also bcos not yet stable.
As to application, I'm not sure. But u can check at the website. I'm yet to explore all this bcos not enough time.
Photos ? Sorry bro, I don't have any other camphone ... But I maybe able to post pix from a full-fledge digicam in the future

wow, briliant quality picture!
marwan
12-28-2004, 01:49 AM
it uses regular MMC right? also, i was refering to take pics of the 7710 next to another phone, and then taking a picture(with a digicam ofcourse, not phone cam!) :)

I see ... You wanna compare the size of it, or you wanna make sure that I really have it ...heh heh, joking bro :D I'll try to put it next to a Nokia 6610. Only prob is the USB cable of my Canon digicam is nowhere to be seen. I'll let u know nevertheless.
Yes, it uses the normal MMC. How about your 6630, is it the same ?
marwan
12-28-2004, 02:12 AM
cool, thanks man!
my 6630 uses DV RS-MMC, it comes with 64MB. the problem is that my 6630 is at the Nokia dealer to re-install the software since it started making a buzzing noise everytime i make a call. it's been there for 3 days now, i should hear from them today. you have no idea how angry i am, its' taking them forever to upgrade the darn firmsware. If the problem is not fixed they are going to give me a new 6630.

sweet, congrats man. be sure to let us know how long the battery lasts.
i wish the 7710 was out around the time i bought the useless P910! :(
good thing i sold the P910 for a good price a month after i bought it.
One can nit pick easily as nothing in this world is perfect but sometimes somethings get pretty close to perfection..............like the sony Cybershot cameras, Vaio laptops and the two new kids on the block the NOKIA 6630 and 7710.
Happy new year folks....................
All the very best...........
Cheers,
:)mie

Marwan, I've got all the pix in my digicam now. The only prob is, as I told u earlier is that my USB cable from the cam to PC is missing (due to long hibernation). So I won't be able to upload the pix until I sort this mess out. Sorry bro :(

this being the first touch screen by nokia wat do you tink of it? like is it responsive? ever feel it oculd be better? in terms of touchscreen calibration is it detailed?
Manburg
12-29-2004, 02:46 AM
Shaheen, it's difficult for me to judge it objectively, since unlike other people, this is the first time I ever owned (as opposed to used) a smartphone/touchscreen. So, my lack of prolonged experience with one may cloud my judgement a bit, if u know what I mean (bcos to be accused as being biased towards it is the last thing I wish)
Anyway, just my 2 cents based on your query:
1. Touchscreen response.
I believe it is as responsive as it can be. U just tap it (stylus/finger) and it will straight away response, no lag whatsoever. This is almost true for every menu. Anyway, if you're tapping into the Images menu (where u put all your pix) there's a retrieval time for it to upload all the pix if u put the mode as thumbnail as opposed to filename. It's better to store everything in the MMC, so that the device operation isn't hampered by the storage.
2. Screen calibration.
In the control panel menu, u have a screen calibration menu. It's just a simple procedure where it asks u to tap the 4 corner of the screen. I don't know how detailed u'd want it to be.
It has hanged a few times, but rectified by dislodging the battery.
The startup time is a bit long, at the last count, it's about 1 minute until the prompt for passwords appears.
Other gripe, if any, I'm using it with the bundled pouch bag, which I believe is very important to protect the vast screen. So the downside, I've got to open the bag first b4 answering a call.
As to the missing keypad that some have voiced critically, it's not a problem at all. U just have to press the red "end call" button on top of the device and the dialler will immediately splash on the screen.
All in all, I'm happy with it bcos it can do almost everything that I want it to. The most important thing is, it's a multimedia device first and others second. Being so used to one hand operation b4, now I'm getting used to this one.
Any other questions ? :D

thanks for that :D its my first time using a touch screen as well (p900). and the calibration seems to be the same as p900.

First impression, was given to the customer beside me, i was accompanying my friend to buy a S700 when 2 customers beside me (from Singapore) were looking for phones, and when asked whats their budget they started to go 'kiasu'..they went : " anything, any price.... i want the best and latest." And when they're shown the 7710.... they go :"wah~~ what is that? PDA? no button?? " heheheh latest...... best..... hohoho ..... latest....... :D

hehehe, well my wife is using the S700 at the moment, and im using her 6600 as a temp phone till i get my 6630 back from the Nokia dealer(re-installing firmware). The old SE P910 i had sold it to a store for a very good price, along with my Nokia 7610 and T610. :)
which reminds me, i hope increases the screen size of series 60 phones. or atleast use 176x220 to freshen up the display.

[can the user interface be configured for a left handed user?]
Sorry bro, I think it can't. Anyway, what do u mean by that ? I'm a lefthander, and there's no prob at all for me to operate it. If you're concerned with having to use the stylus with the lefthand, I'm doing that and I can do that in no time at all. FYI, the handwriting recognition is unbelievable. When I got the phone, I straight away write on the piece and it can recognise it. It has a feature where u can train the device to learn your style anyway. :)

What I meant is can you move the area you write on with your stylus to the left side of the screen so that you don't cover the output with your left hand? I had suggested that to Nokia, and they replied its a good idea... maybe in the next firmware update. :)

Nope, it does not. But I believe it's just a matter of time b4 it emerges. Now I'm using the bundled case to protect not only the screen, but the overall body of the device. I don't even have to take it out to answer any call, just press the green "answer" button and put it at your ear, no prob.
