Hi, I would just wanna ask bout the SE V800-3G. Since, rite now I'm in Ireland where they just launch 3G..I thought of getting the V800..but i'm going back to Malaysia in couple of months and as u know that malaysia haven't lauch 3G yet, so i was wondering would i be able to receive video calls without the 3G network??..i know that without the 3G network i wouldnt be able to make video calls..but can i still receive..

S710a works on 850Mhz. i dont think it would work on 900Mhz providers. unless they offer 1800/1900Mhz

Edge is a faster version of GPRS, it about 3-4 times faster than GPRS, but a bit slower than 3G. with EDGE you cannot video conference.

hi lady jane, to correct some info; (i'm the buddy star mentioned, the Z1010 was sold in a JB Maxis shop, which in turn is a smuggled in unit from Singapore; these are what we call AP units) Malaysia had no 3G, Digi is the only network having EDGE. But they're not using the 1900mhz as Celcom and Maxis are, therefore if u wanna use Digi, a phone u brought in from a 850/1800/1900 phone in Malaysia would end up being a single band phone. Doesn't matter anyway.

Maxis is intending to start 3G (but i think it's total rubbish for M'sia to start 3G) and i do think dat it'll be a coupla years b4 it stabilizes in terms of price, practivality and functionality. Second, do u think it's possible to have international video calls? i doubt it dearly. Lastly, when u're back in Malaysia, who u wanna video call with? better use MMS.

Lastly, i do think it's ok to get a 3G phone to use it as a non, by the way; u'll only use the video calling thing around 3% of the time of ur total usage, most of us dun wanna see the other's face while talkin. In the end, 1.3MP, MS Duo Pro card slot, 262k screen, fabulous design (if it's da white one) and the one and only in M'sia..... who cares bout 3G or videocall?

P.S. how much is it for somehting like Pay-As-You-Go in Ireland? thanks.

Y all the sudden V800 is a 3G phone... people have to start concerning JUZ about the bloody 3G??!! 3G is not REALLY the issue about V800.. the phone itself is a powerful phone... if ur area doesnt hv 3G, so wat... get it anyway coz its a great phone.. u might miss out the 3G but atleast get a 3G ready phone for future use... dont forget V800 comes with 1.3MP, Flash light, Max 1GB memory, cool animations, sleek design... all that forgotten juz bcoz of 3G??

FYI...

The Z1010 handsets were given to selected corporate customers in M'sia for 3G testing which in on going now. Maxis is reported to launch 3G in Klang Valley by mid March as preliminary tests have been going on for the past 6 months. So, i guess the V800 will come in handy in the very near future.

ya got a point there. but wifi networks have to be standardised in order for cross compatibility with mobilephones. thus , a whole new generation of wireless network ( the wi-max , 30kM SINGLE broadcast tower ) that enables all PCs and all mobilephones within a 30 KM radius to have wireless internet access/ phone connection. alot of probs. protocol infrastructure wise . doubt we will b seeing wifi-max for at least another 10 years.

i feel maxis the 3G is (no offence to malaysians here) a bit of a national pride thing. HK has 3G , singapore has 3G , OZ has 3G . malaysia dosent. if GPRS isnt even earning operator revenues , it makes absolutely no commercial sense to get a 3G network ? it would hurt the company's bottom line . hell. just look at malysia telco phone replacement rate , isn't that high, so who would actually even upgrade from their simple monochrome ( i m not trying to insult / demean malaysians , adults above 40 in SEA generally still have monchrome screen nk3310 and the like ) screens to nearly 2k ringitt models ?

and to enable maixs to do a reasonable assement , it has already spent millions to deploy a network and acquire a lisence , the money has to be recovered somehow right ? so where is the money going to come from ?

somehow i suspect , its pressure from malaysian government to keep up technology ( people carrying 3G mobiles from most of the world : read EUROPEAN standards of 3G) for the convenience of business travellers ( klang valley covers KL and putrajaya the administrative capital does it ?) at the expense of commercial profitability.

even in SG , 3G launch is not expected to break even for at least a good 2 years. singtel (SG largest telco) actually targeted something close to 40 % of its local mobile service revenue to be data revenue ( news sources) by 2002. in 2004 , its mobile data reciepts accounted for something like 20% of its revenue. thats really bad.

asians in general tend to use data services like GPRS / wap very sparingly. this is why 3G in SEA , with data content being the primary main revenue earner, is highly likely to flop IMO.

Malaysia had to do something with the "built tall, big, wide thing and they have it so do we thing" it's a culture; brought by Mahathir and sended to us in the "Malaysia Boleh" thing....... anyway, hope such acts will stop, so dat we will become what we are during the 80's... a small but prosperous nation.... Malaysia is spending too much to create and indentity and to achieve the so called dream..... an identity that costs too much. They wanted too much in a very short time frame, they wanted a lot of University graduates, so they lowered the standards in universitys to allow for more graduants. haha! They wanted a national car manufacturer, and they kept protecting it till it doesn't realize what to do after acquiring Lotus and setting up a R&D department. Proton is no longer a National icon.... it is a threat to free economy markets and a threat to malaysian citizens who wanted a better and safer car.

Well, rite here the phone is around £50-250 with contract and £500+ without contract..but my frend did buy the phone from ebay U.K..and he got it for £320(without contract). I might be buying trough ebay too if I can find a seller, since getting it from there is much cheaper and without contract which is even better.

Well, I may not get it from Vodafone it self since its difficult to get a contract with them..for example you have to show a valid bill (electrical,phone) under your name for a proof of address and sometimes it depends also on whether you are eligible for a contract. They have all these requirements for you to be eligible for a contract. So, for the mean time I'm still searching for the phone in ebay. And for the unlock thing..my frend bought the phone from ebay and it was locked under vodafone..so what he did was just call up vodafone uk and ask them to unlock it for him, instantly they unlock it for him.

And for your info, I'm not in UK, I'm in Ireland, therefore I can't buy from vodafone,UK since I'm not living there. But Vodafone,Ireland said that they going to have the phone by end of this month.So,I dunno how much it will cost over here and I dont know how much it will be under contract.

Well,guess what, the phone is available in Ireland at Vodafone. The phone is under contract between Euro244-324 and without contract at Euro620. I'll be getting it around next week I hope..can't wait. :D :D

old/new version?? i dun think there'll be any significant difference right? when i bought my gf a K700, the keypad lightings were white, but other frens of mine who got it later on all had purple lightning.......

one thing to highlight to all of ya... the phone is apprently small... yes the pics of V800 look kinda big... but its surprisingly small.. so no bulky issues there.. and very slim too, its amazing!! so tat brings me to another issue.. since the phone itself is small, the external screen is kinda small aswell.. kinda bad in a way.. juz a little tiny dissapointment frm my point of view.. but wont worry too much...

V800 is an amzing phone.. beats nothin like it... its a winner! cant imagine anything better than V800.. maybe a larger external screen wud be nice.. u guyz shud get one too... so we call video call... hehe..

to tell you the truth. this phone and the new panasonic X800 have lots in common in terms of design and features. only difference is that x800 has symbian and v800 has 3g.

i got it unlock for free.. got an insider to help me out... so its all gd!! A piece of advice.. its better to unlock via vodafone.. which u juz pay 20pounds.. its much much more easier takes less than 5sec to unlock.. and safer... so it wont spoil ur phone by using 3rd parties solution.


did u get the phone under contract? did they ask why you want to unlock the phone? coz i thought of unlocking it too since i'm going to go back to M'sia, but am afraid that they will ask me why i want to unlock the phone since the contract is for 12 months period..

to tell you the truth. this phone and the new panasonic X800 have lots in common in terms of design and features. only difference is that x800 has symbian and v800 has 3g.

naah no NEC for me, i realised that hte camera shouldnt be my main aim in getting a new phone. so im trying to squeeze my savings for a XDA Mini.

wow a very nice phone!!! sleek and slim!! but the keypad design n layout kinda weird tho... but overall nice! anyways... yea hopefully gettin the 1GB in m'sia KLCC.. ard RM899... its better gettin the SONY High Speed... coz without high speed.. transfering files, mp3 wud take a while... some users said V800 is not built with quality.. cheap materials, bad design flaws.. but so far.. so gd!! solid and quality!!

it's very good..... but should add up the ram higher... it's abit slow sometimes, hhmmm funny it's 256 already......... but if u're not a Sony fan, there's nothing really so exciting about this notebook actually. :D but i do take it as a good buy.
