is there a problem with compatability at all between companies? also, is the only adaptor needed a PC card or USB adaptor (i mean, does there need to be an intermediary for a mobile headset connecting to a PC)?

Michael

No, you just need a USB or card that supports the Bluetooth Headset or Hands Free profiles. Most all do these days. Nothing special needed. Pretty much any $30 adapter will do.

so u mean with a USB BT dongle, i can use the bluetooth headset as a microphone when i use my PC?

Michael

Microphone and speaker.

If you want it just as a mic, you'll have to go into the Windows control panel Sound section and switch audio back to your sound card. But yes, you can use any headset with most any random USB adapter and have it work as a microphone.

Also, you have to have the Bluetooth headset active before you run the app you want to use it with. When an app loads, it gets the current sound settings from the system and then uses those devices. If you start the app before the headset has taken over control of the audio, the app will still be using your sound card.

i tried a jabra 250 but did not manage to make it work with latpop. sound is all crackled up and full of distortion. i do not know what this is due to. should the jabra 250 work with a laptop too?

What about if you buy a nokia wireless headset, is this compatible with a laptop too?

basically what i need is a bluetooth earpiece which can be used both with a mobile phone (6630) and both a dell latitude D505 with inbuilt bluetooth connectivity, to make calls with a softphone.

thx

To use the headset as a microphone,

Firstly you have to get it connected to the PC.
Go to the "My Bluetooth Places"
Click on "Entire Bluetooth Neighbourhood"
Click on your headset
Click on connect.

Then go to the windows control panel in your computer and inside multimedia you will have a option of the sound device or something. There you should select "Bluetooth Audio"

That should work fine.

PM me if you still face problems.

Cheers

Hi Guys,
I did the conection with Headset and my LapTop... even MP3 I did listen using the headset... works fine... But a I had a problem after that. when i tried to use my headset with my T610 again, it was nos working, and when I select the option "conect" and the device is removed of the list "my acessories" so I have to pairing the headset again with the T610. But the headset , after that, stop working with me laptop, and i have do pairing again and again and again, each change of device it must be done. Why this happen? Other doubt that i have. with bluetooth only one device can access the pc or the cell?? I tought bluetooth was able to multiple conections, not only one at time. Tks and sorry about my bad english... I guess your headset is a single pairing device, eg. SE HBH-65/600/660.

You needs a headset with multiple pairing to maintain the pairing information for multiple devices, eg. Motorola 810/820/850.

is it possible to use bluetooth headsets designed for mobile phones with your PC. i've been scouring the net for details on bluetooth PC headsets, but every search ends up displaying mobile headsets only...
After some fuss with the OS (WinXP SP2) I discovered that it is not possible to use the bluetooth headset directly as a headset/mic so as to use it to caputre sound into a sound recorder such as the windows sound recorder even after I configured my settings in the "Sounds and Audio Devices" applet in the control panel to use "Bluetooth Audio" as the default voice and playback device (This is configured on the "Voice" tab in the "Sounds and Audio Devices" applet launched from the control panel). I believe this is a fault of the OS and not the bluetooth drivers I am using.

However, it is possible to configure the bluetooth headset as the default audio device for voice recognition capture and playback by setting the "Audio Input" device in the "Speech" applet to use "Bluetooth Audio". On the "Text to Speech" tab you can also set the "Audio Output" to use the "Bluetooth Audio" device for speech playback.

Further, if you would like to use your bluetooth headset as the mic and headset during MSN Messenger "chat", you simply run the "Audio/Video Tuning Wizard" again and select "Bluetooth Audio" as the input/output audio device instead of your soundcard. After that, the bluetooth headset worked fine (after the device is paired of course;) This way, you can still hear your video game audio through your default audio device and control the volume seperatly without affecting the volume of your MSN Messenger conversation.

Hi Guys - I stumbled upon your forum by accident, but reading many of the threads, it seems a very useful site!

I have been trying to connect the headset with my laptop (an ACER Ferrari with built-in Bluetooth) but I keep getting a message saying that there are no "services" available to use on the device (the headset)....HELP!!!

Michael, you seem to know what you're talking about...which is more than my suppliers!
I have a Sony Erricson BT headset and a generic dongle fitted to my Compaq Presario running XP . I also have a Sony Z600 phone.

The phone finds the headset. The laptop finds the phone and installs it. It won't find the headeset, however hard I try. Turned the phone off and deleted it so even if the dongle is single device it should find it. What's going wrong??

I have the same problem with my Nokia HS-4W headset. There do not appear to be any services. In addition, when going to Sounds and Audio Devices in Control panel, there is no reference under any of the Tabs to the Bluetooth device. The device is recognized by the PC and is connected.

Can anyone help?

I have had feedback from WidComm who write most Bluetooth driver software. Apparently, the software I have does not support the "Headset" profile, so cannot be used with the headset. The only solution is to contact your particular manufacturer and see if they have updated software for your Bluetooth device...

Reefergeezer, can you post here the reply from WidComm? I have contacted Nokia and they returned me quite a strange answer. Quote:

Thank you for e-mailing Nokia's Contact Center.
We apologize for the delay in responding to your e-mail message and appreciate your patience. We understand that you are encountering difficulties while attempting to use your Nokia HS-4W Wireless Boom Headset with your laptop, and we would like to provide you the following information:
Please note that the Nokia HS-4W Wireless Boom Headset is compliant with Bluetooth specification 1.1 using the 2.45 GHz ISM band, and supports the following Bluetooth profiles: Handsfree 1.0 and Headset 1.1. However, since your laptop is not a Nokia product we do not have any information regarding the appropriate Bluetooth pairing procedure for it and about any compatibility concerns. We recommend that you contact the manufacturer of the Bluetooth adapter on your laptop for additional assistance and information. We apologize that we do not have additional information to provide you in this matter, and regret any inconvenience this may cause.

The short and sweet reply I got was:

"I suggest contacting Acer to see if they support the Headset Profile in
the version of the Bluetooth software installed on their laptops..." which ties up with what Nokia have said. As I understand it, both devices need to support the Headset profile. It looks as though our Bluetooth devices on laptops/desktops are "old school" and do not support this profile.

I have given up for now, until I manage to get through to ACER, which is impossible :-(

My problem is the same as many of the others here. My widcomm software simply doesn't have any support for headsets. Do you know the version of it that does have that kind of support?

Is there any legitimate way of getting a newer widcomm software? I noticed that they were bought by another company and I just could'nt find a way to contact them and ask for an update... Asking for it to the manufacturer of my usb bluetooth antenna isn't going to wark either, since I just can't find the name of the company anywhere on the product or it's box.

Could someone help me?

Reefergeezer, you are not quite right :)

Several months ago I successfully used a Sony-Ericsson bluetooth headset with the same laptop - i.e. they paired and the headset function was available. So I think that it is not a problem only of the WidComm hardware and/or software.

i have my jabra 250 setup with a generic dongle and no problem so far, i can record (lots of crackle at low bit rate - high bit rate sounds good) and listen to music on the headset.

what i would like to do is route the microphone on the headset directly to the output of the analogue sound card. any idea how to do that

so basically mic to speaker, rather than mic to record

All of these responses offer me hope, but I've yet to get my head completely around getting my bluetooth headset to work as a mic through my laptop. My goal is to use this headset as my mic for facilitating VoIP calls via Skype.

My device has been recongised and is "passkey enabled".

I've got a Sony Ericsson HBH-65 headset that I'm trying to use as a mic through my Dell Inspiron 8500 (running XP SP2). Currently, my WIDCOMM driver is version 1.4.1.1, dated 18/03/03.

I've gone through my Control Panel to "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" to 'fiddle' with the "Sounds", "Audio", and "Voice" tabs settings, changing my default devices from 'Sigma Tel Audio' to 'Bluetooth Audio'.

I've tried going to the widcomm.com site (now a Broadcomm address due to recent acquisition), and bugger me if I can find any obivous driver downloads that might apply to my situation.

Does anyone think this (Widcomm drivers) is all that I'm missing to get this to work, or am I missing something else (or doing something incorrectly)? Any help, experiences would be appreciated.

I have a HS-4W delivered with my Nokia, everything works fine with the phone and the headset, but when i try to connect it with my computer it says it can't.

The connection between the HS and the Phone has been terminated so that's not it, the headset indicates it's not connected. The drivers i use are the ones i installed trough Jons bluetooth guide (http://www.jonsguides.com/bluetooth/index.html).

My phone works perfect this way together with the nokia software, and also trough my bluetooth locations, but the phone doesn't. It just won't connect.

Any ideas?

Hey guys,
thought I'd share my Bluetooth info with you. In order to connect a PC to a BT headset you need to find out first of all if your PC provides the "Audio Gateway" (AG) service. This service connects to the "Headset Profile" (HSP) on the headset. Open "My Bluetooth Places" on the PC and click on "View My Bluetooth Services." You should see "My Audio Gateway" icon there. If you don't you're out of luck and no amount of fiddling will help you. If you try to discover the services on your headset, they won't show up because the PC only shows those services it can use and it can't use the headset service if the PC does not support audio gateway. You will need updated software that supports Audio Gateway or else buy new hardware that comes with the required software.

Now assuming you have Audio Gateway service on your PC, follow the normal pairing procedure with your headset. You should see the headset profile on your BT headset and try to connect to it. You may require a passkey or PIN to connect. Consult your headset manufacturer for the PIN. For Jabra, the default PIN is 0000 and you must enter this on your PC the first time you connect if prompted by Windows.

Once you have successfully connected, you should hear all the sounds from your PC through your headset and the Mic on the headset should also work fine. If you hear distortion or crackling sounds on your headset, go to properties of your audio gateway service to ensure that the signal is not too strong, nor too weak. Try disconnecting and reconnecting as well. There are some incompatible devices out there so that may be a problem too.

Now go to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio tab. Under "Sound Playback" and also under "Sound Recording" you should see Bluetooth Audio selected. If you change the playback device back to your original sound card, you will now hear sound through your PC speakers, but your BT headset mic is still connected to your PC. Change your recording device to your sound card, and your BT headset mic no longer works. In this way you can change mic or speaker settings independently to use either the headset or PC mic and/or speaker. Note that every time you make a change you need to close and restart any sound applications to detect that change. Similarly, under the Voice tab you will also see Bluetooth Audio selected and you can toggle between that and your sound card for voice recognition software.

As a side note, I use the following BT devices with each other:

1) Belkin USB dongle with WIDCOMM software on my Windows XP SP2 desktop

2) CSR bluetooth hardware built into my Acer TravelMate C302 Tablet PC with WIDCOMM software on Windows XP SP2

3) i-mate PDA2 with built-in bluetooth and (you guessed it!) WIDCOMM software on Windows Mobile 2003 SE

4) Jabra BT800 headset

I have successfully connected all of these devices with each other. The key to remember is that the device that has the speakers and mic must support the "Headset" profile while the device that sends data to the speakers and receives data from the mic over bluetooth must support the audio gateway profile.

Other than that security and authentication issues may prevent a device from connecting so if you run into problems, temporarily disable authentication and encryption on both devices. And last of all, remember not all devices are compatible with each other.

Btw, mp3 and music over bluetooth sucks big time! Most headsets have built in noise cancellation which deteriorates the music even more. Hopefully the A2DP and other new BT profiles will improve sound quality.

I have spent the past week trying to get a Motorola HS805 bluetooth headset to work with my laptop so that I can use my SIP client. I have an Acer Ferrari 3400 with XP-SP2. It uses the CSR radio as well.

I can associate the headset and it even indicates "connected" in Bluetooth properties, but I can not get the headset to appear in the audio device drop-down. The only device present is my Realtek AC97 internal audio.

The Acer has a built in microphone and I am able to make calls using the laptop as a speaker-phone, but the audio quality of the tiny condensor microphone is quite muffled and problematic on calls. I was hoping that a headset would do the trick. I could go to a wired headset, but I decided on Bluetooth due to size. I already carry a camera, presentation pointer... well you all know.

During the past week I have tried loading the WIDCOMM drivers but have had no success. SP2 is blocking the action in various ways. I spent several hours on the phone with Acer tech support and they blew it off as a corrupt driver and wanted me to reload the entire operating system. ( Like I would reload the OS on a working computer... sure, I have nothing else to do but trash my data)

Of course that brought us to an impass. He insisted on the reload and I refused, so the call was terminated on the basis that the client was unwilling to continue with recomended instruction.

Of course I am still without a working headset.

Anarchist,

You seem to have a similar setup in your #2 above. How did you go around SP2?

hey if its a csr device try forcing the driver install. I have a csr based no name bt dongle . I have to force the install make the install manually via controlpanel /system on the device to make it work.

Once the driver is recognizes widcomm works as normal

just extract the driver to a directory somewhere using winrar ( open up the cab / msi file etc )

then force the driver install

Hello All,

very helpful posts. I managed to get as far as connecting my BT headset with the desktop. In order to make that happen, you actually have to force Windows XP2 SP2 to dump its own driver and install the driver off the widcomm cd. This can be doen under the device manager.

I do have the Audio Gateway icon and the headset icon as mentioned by Anarchist. However when I go into the Control Panle to adjust or setup the audio settings for the BT device, the volume adjusters are opaque, I can not move the levers, nor can I hear or record any sound. The device shows as connected and BT is an available option in the sound settings as the audio device. Any ideas why I am unable to actually use the BT headset?

On a side note, on my old laptop with XP, w/o service pack the installation went without a hitch...

I'll admit to not having read through this entire thread, but it seems many of you are having problems with your Bluetooth adapter being forced to use the MS drivers that don't support headsets.

Read this to see how to get around it and get your original drivers working:

Michael,

the installation part went fine.

I can see my Audio Gateway and the Headset in my BT places. The headset can be paired and shows as connected on the pc, but when I select the BT headset as the default audio device in the control panel, the volume can not be adjusted, it is opague, meaning MS does not seem to accept any changes. The audio setup wizard on the voice tab also gives me the same problem. IN short, I have a connected device, that can not be accessed or tested through the control panel, Any ideas how I can fix that?

Michael
07-19-2005, 12:21 PM
Does your PC show that the headset is connected at that time? Also, know that you have to have the Bluetooth device set as the default input or output audio source BEFORE the application you want to use it with is loaded.

This means that if you wanted to listen to winamp on the headset, you would have to make sure winamp was not running, then make the Bluetooth audio the default output source, and then run winamp.

Yes the headset shows as Connected. Yes, in the Sounds and Audio Devices I have set the BT device as the default. And I did so before activating any audio application.

The issue is that the moment the BT headset is connected, all volume levers in the Sounds and Audio devices tab become opague. Volume can not be adjusted. It is as if the device is there and yet in the audio settings it can not be readily accessed.

Once the BT headset is connected the only thing I hear on the headset is an intermittend double ding-dong sound. But according to the manual that only means a connection is there yet nothign is transmitted.

In the BT properties the connection is shown as being good to too strong.
I am using a PIV chipset with an MSI board from 2004, XP w SP2.
The headset worked fine on my old trashy laptop, which was a 3 yr old Celeron w XP

Do you have any additional hints?

Michael

If you are initiating the connection from the PC, you will have to answer it with the headset, just as you would with an inbound phone call.

Ok, I've searched all over the web for someone who's having a similar problem as I, but I have yet to find it.

I use a wireless headset as a microphone and speaker to use with my win XP machine and voice over IP service (Skype). I am using a Zonet usb dongle with the Wincomm 4.0.1.700 driver. I am able to connect and use the headset service, but here's what I don't like: when I connect my headset to the PC, my default audio control panel is automatically set to be the headset.

Skype is a relatively versitile and sophisticated application. Instead of just using the default windows audio, it has an option to select an audio device from all available. Therefore, regardless of what my control panel is set to, the application will use my BT device (as long as it's connected).

However, this is the ONLY application with with I care to use my headset, and it's actually quite annoying to have to change the control panel if I want to use other applications that make sound while my headset is connected. It seems like there should be a setting that would allow me to specify this behavior, but when I emailed Wincomm support, they were not helpful.

Did you have to do anything additional beside just pairing up the headset and the laptop? I have a 1 yr. old IBM T40P with integrated bluetooth, I can pair the devices, and the headset shows up as an audio device, but I cannot see any services for it? Did you have to install the widcomm drivers seperately? Is there a way to verify if the laptop supports the headset profile that you know of? Thanks a ton, you all are great for the communal support!

well i had to do nothing basically once the driver is installed . ( not the drivers that shipped with my bt dongle ) get the updated 4.01 drivers they are a hell of a lot more stable and seem to work better with xp sp2.

all i do is install the "hacked" widcomm drivers... then connect my headset ( bt250v / bt 800 ) to pc by pairing it then using the widcomm bluetooth symbol from system tray connect it as a headset . . once its connected all sound is auto transferred to it u can use it for p2p voice chat etc winamp music listening etc

Ok, here's one I've not seen mentioned on this board.

I am using Cisco VoIP Softphone connected to our office. I have a Motorola HS850, which I have connected and am able to use without issue. My question has to do with the 'Answer' button on the HS850. When i try to answer a call that appears on the Softphone, i disconnect the BT unit and have to pick up the call using the Hard Phone. I then have to go back and reconnect the BT to the software in order to use it with the Softphone. Any ideas how to answer a call using the answer button on the BT unit? or if there is a BT unit that can answer a call coming in to the Cisco Softphone?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi I've been reading the past posts and it seems the problem most of you have is that you are running XP2! This is the cause of most of the problems the stack for XP2 is only available for phones as far as I am aware and does not carry services for headsets if you want to use your headset directly with Voip for instance you are gonna have to load up the Widcomm drivers with a bluetooth dongle, but there you hit another snag because Microsoft doesn't accept the widcomm driver because it isn't signed. You therefore have to go through a series of steps to get the driver onto your system.

For further info see: www.esktech.com/pmr/widcomm-xp2.htm

After some searching for a solution to the same problem with the Ferrari 4005, I found a driver file at

http://www.acer.com.hk/download/ext/acernote/fr4000/btw.zip

Now my bluetooth headset works fine with Skype or any other app.

Wouldn't it be nice if Acer just told ya in the first place!

Thanks for all the advice, with help found here I have managed to get my Jabra 250 bluetooth headset working with my laptop.

However, it seems to only want to pair with one item at a time. I
- enable it with my phone, test it and it works,
- then enable it with my laptop, test it and it works,
- but when I go back to my phone it needs to be paired again before it will work.

Any advice?

hey people :)

Im having real grief with my bluetooth headset and was wondering if anyone else was having similar problems.

my phone or my computer (but the problem is really the phone that i bought it for) detects the headset but then when it trys to connect, it gives me a generic error 'failed to connect'. and yes its also in discoverable mode.

stuff i have :
MobilePhone : Motorola L6
Bluetooth Headset : Ergenic (ERG BT-001)

Not really worried bout the computer BUT am having problems getting it to connect to the headset cos i'd love to use it for MSN and/or Skype.

USB Bluetooth Dongle is a Toshiba NewLINK. the packagaing was really ambiguous part from that but the model type isnlbt-ed1. I dont think this has anything to do with the problems (altho i could be wrong) but thought i'd give the info anyway.

i really dont understand why this isnt working so any help would rock as ive been trying all sorts and repeating what i have done for about 3 days now. grrrr.

thanks in advance,
Shad

Hello all

I am trying to get my Jabra 250 bluetooth headset to work with windows/Skype; I have a ISSC bluetooth USB dongle to connect the headset to the computer (the OS is WinXP+SP2)

I have downloaded and installed the Widcomm v5 drivers (I had BlueSoleil drivers - v1.6 I believe - coming with the ISSC dongle), based on the recommendations from various forums. I managed to pair the Jabra headset with the computer, then the "My audio gateway" service was enabled and connected. I went in the control panel and selected Bluetooth Audio as the default device, both for sound playback and sound recording.

I can now hear sound (although slightly crackling; poorer quality than the one I get when I pair the headset with my phone), but the mic does not work. Also:
- when I switch back to "Intel Integrated Audio" for recording, the microphone attached to the computer works
- the microphone from the Jabra 250 works, as I have paired the headset with the mobile and it all works fine.

Any suggestions, ideas?
Thank you

i have a inspiron 1200 laptop (with XP pro), and $30 iogear USB2BT dongle, my phone is an audiovox 6600, and my Bluetooth is a plantronics 320.the PPC and the 6600 can BT activesync and the 6600 and the plantronics can associate, but does anyone know how to get the plantronics to joine with the dongle to use it as a PC mic. i am getting migranes from reading these blogs, so if anyone knows how to associate the BT headset and the dongle to use as a pc mic, couldyou post a step-by-step or Email me? David@protechaccess.com. write in subject line "Bluetooth and dongle", or i may delete it.

I have a very generic dongle, no drivers, just standard windows drivers. I don't have a "My Bluetooth Places" so can't investigate all these things people are suggesting. My phone, my headset, they both appear in my "Bluetooth Devices" but no services with the headset, guessing it's because I don't have software supporting Audio Gateway. Any way to get software that does?

I have had it working on SP1 but not SP2.

If I try a switch to WIDCOMM on SP2 it complains about the license file. Nuts. Or this happens:
