Nokia sees memory boost for phones from hard disks

Tue 2 November, 2004 18:04

MONACO, Nov 2 (Reuters) - The world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia, will use hard disks in new handsets as early as next year to boost memory for songs and pictures, it said on Tuesday.

"We will see hard disks in Nokia devices in 2005 and 2006," Nokia Multimedia head Anssi Vanjoki told a news conference.

Apple's popular iPod was the first music player to use a hard disk to store thousands of songs, rather than the few dozen that can be stored on flash memory cards. The move comes as firms like Nokia try to pack more functions into their phones, like e-mail, and music and video players, trying to tap the rapidly growing "smartphone" market.

Nokia said on Tuesday it expected global smartphone sales to more than double annually in 2004 to over 20 million units. This is seen rising to almost 240 million units in 2008.
