Not sure if this has been answered before, but I've read though all of the recent posts up to the 4 page and haven't found answers.

I'm getting my Nokia 7610 on Monday, so I'm going to be a new user. My old phone - Nokia 6600.

1. The pop-port on the 7610. Is it compatible with all pop-port accessories? Cause I think I still got stereo headphones from my 7250, that I used to listen to the radio. Will they work on the 7610? I'm guessing it will still be mono sound?

2. Old apps and games from my 6600. If I copy over the .jar and .jad files from my 6600's MMC to my 7610 MMC and install the games and apps from the 7610, will the games and apps work?? Or will I have to go and pay for the games AGAIN?? I'm mainly asking about games, cause I have alot of Java games that I paid for that are on my 6600, and I obviously don't want to pay for the same games again, if they will work on the 7610. Would they be compatible? Or is a new version of the game required to work with the 7610?

3. Will .SIS install files for apps and games from my 6600 work on the 7610? Or are the SIS file more phone model dependant, than Java files?

4. MP3s or AMRs? I have made about 86 AMR music ringtone clips for my 6600, and they worked pretty good. Should I switch over to MP3s or stick with AMRs? Is there a quality difference between using an MP3 as a ringtone and using an AMR as a ringtone?

5. If I do switch over to MP3, what is the lowest quality I should use for optimal quality for the loudspeaker to use? 128kbps? 96kbps? 64kbps? They are only going to be 30 second clip ringtones. I will not be using the phone to play full MP3s on the road.

Thank you,
:L:

1) yes it will still remain mono sound! becoz when output from the phone is mono how can you expect to get stereo if you put a 7250 headphone?? Rubbish.. Most of the pop-port accessories are compatible!! Go to nokia.com choose Nokia 7610 in phones then select supported accessories (or whatever it is called) you get to know all the supported accessories

2) you cant copy mmc to mmc because 7610 has got a mini mmc card! See do as i say.. (if you dont understand you can mail me at ashok.nayak@rediffmail.com) First install PC Suite which came with Nokia 6600 then run the program and take a full backup of your Nokia 6600 (via bluetooth or infra) it will ask which folder the files should be backed up choose a folder (e.g c:\nokia) then the back up will take around 15 to 30 mins (depends whether it is bluetooth or infra, bluetooth is very fast) then go to My computer, C:\ then go to Nokia folder, there should be a folder called Backup.. open that folder and open the file (using notepad) filestore.dat there will be a list of all the files (nokia renames the files to DAT format for security) for example if your game (jar file) is Fun snake (search for that name you will find the file name in something like this - 777 0 E:\system\MIDlets\[10133ce3]\7952411-funsnake.jar -1867826128) then go to the backup folder rename 777.dat to funsnake.jar.. then its very easy copy the file to your new 7610 and enjoy! Although i didnt quite enjoy typing so much... Do the same way to all the jar files (games or apps) you need and install it on your 7610!! Themes, symbian games, ringtones everything is stored in dat format you just need to find the file and rename it!! symbian themes and games are in .sis so find for .sis filename in filestore.dat and do the same procedure!! Enjoy!! I think most of the games are compatible! all that i copied were compatible!!

3) all sis files will work!! nothing to worry!

4) i think it wont make much difference in a mono output phone! then i dont have much of an idea on this!!

5) 64kpbs (even if you have a 128kpbs file when you transfer it to your Nokia 6600 using PC Suite it automatically converts it to 64 kpbs wav format!!)

Anymore questions dude?? ah quite tired!! hope you got to learn something new and it was worth the trouble taking by me to write such a long message! best of luck!! dont pay for the games i will send it to you through e-mail.. i have got lots of them!! about 3000 odd!! many never even tried!!

Just to add, the 7610 plays both mp3 and wav files. Wav files sound much clearer, louder, crisper.

Thanks for answering all the questions Toocool. Do you have a 7610?

You didn't have to go into explaining how to do the backup and search for the DAT files. I've already backuped up all my JAR and SIS files from my phone. I used FExplorer to look for them, copied them to the MMC and then copied them from the MMC to the laptop. No PC Suite required.

I have read that WAV sounds better than MP3 or AMR, but how big are those WAVs going to be? When doing WAV ringtones or songs, does everyone leave the WAV at the standard CD quality, or do they convert to a lower bitrate for the phone? Which is what?

Well I will test out different formats. Obviously to save space, I will convert all stereo sounds to mono.

^^
Yes, wav files take up a lot of memory. I've recently discovered that mp3 files sound just as well, assuming the mp3 to begin with is of good quality (and mp3 does take up only a fraction of the space taken up by wav).

mp3 files are very small compared to wav files! can someone recommend (And also give a link if possible) a software to convert mp3 files to lower bitrate and to mono?? i want that software! please help

wav files sound really good but they take a lot of space.. mp3 takes about 50% of the space only!! so thats a lot of difference if you can store 15 songs (wav format) on 64 mb mini mmc card.. you can have about 30 to 35 songs in mp3 format.. thats more than enough to store in your phone once!! what do you say? well i have a 256 mb mini mmc card.. i have about 100 songs with me on my phone!!

quapmocka (by the way what does this mean), i suggest you to wait for Nokia 6630.. its got 3G capability faster processor, EDGE (Edge has already started here in India, i would like to add that i can watch cricket matches, soccer, movies which come on TV at the same speed and 80% clarity.. there was a EDGE phone that my friend has i think 6230, the video looked clean on a small screen, if you watch TV on 6630 then with its huge screen it gonna be a treat) back to 6630.. its a all round phone it has its negatives too.. i didnt like the shape (i must add i hated the shape of 7610 when i saw pics on the net but when i saw the phone and held it i loved it, so my opinion might change and i might say someday the 6630 looks awesome, cant say) and plus there is no infra (7610 too doesnt have infra) you cant send midi tones (even 7610 cant, through 6600 you can send midi tones) all in all 6630 is a powerful device.. wait for it....

Problems that i faced with 7610 :-

its a bit slow to respond(although very fast compared to 6600)
lot of errors while installing apps (the phone hanged twice)
GPRS is very slow!!
No stereo output!!
Video Recording is awfully bad!!

i guess all these problems have been solved in 6630 except the video recording (which i guess will be slightly better than 7610)

I am going to see the Nokia 6630 now (in 10 mins i will be going out and looking at the phone at a Nokia meeting) so i am very happy bye

I've just done a comparison of the size of the different file types.

A 26 second clip was made from a song.

WAV (mono, 16bit, 44,100KHz) = 2,180KB
MP3 (mono, 64kbps bitrate, 44,100KHz) = 203KB
AMR (mono, don't know what else) = 60KB

From listening to both the WAV and MP3, they sound exactly the same on the computer. the AMR file sounds the worst and is somewhat distorted.

But now I've read through a few of the 7610 post and I've heard that when listening to MP3 and AAC files that every few seconds it pauses?? But if it's a WAV file, then it doesn't pause, and the WAV files sound alot better. Does this happen when you set an MP3 as a ringtone? Or only when you play the MP3 with the RealPlayer on the phone?

I've heard that if you listen to MP3s using an alternative MP3 player like UltraMP3, then there are no skips or pauses heard while playing them????

Toocool: The software you are looking for to convert sound files to all kinds of different formats is called dbPowerAmp and it's freeware. You can find it here :- http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

quapmocka is just something I made up while staring at the Compaq logo. It's Compaq spelt backwards with a few letters filled in.

I cannot wait for the 6630, because it will take way too long to come out here in South Africa. I mean the 7610 has only recently been released in South Africa on Wednesday (October 6th). Beside I don't really like the 6630. I will wait for Nokia's next 3G phone to arrive, one that looks stylish and I would like a clam-shell phone as well.....a Nokia 3G clam-shell.

About the MP3 format? Has anyone had experience messing around with the different bitrates and stuff? I want to get the smallest possible file size, but also having the MP3 sound good enough for a ringtone? Is 64kbps bitrate the lowest I should go, or could I go lower and have it sound the same?

smallest file size with good sound quality.. the undisputed winner is MP3!! No doubt about it! i thought wav was double the size of an mp3 file but after reading what you stated above it seems that it is 10 times bigger than an mp3! even if you have better quality its not worth loading a wav file on your phone! thats what i feel atleast!!

Sorry I should have put in the stereo, but didn't think it was necessary because the phone was mono.

But that same 26 clip:-

WAV (stereo, 16bit, 44,100KHz) = 4,230KB

As expected, it's double the size of the mono version.

For dbPowerAmp you have to download the Music Converter :- http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Yes there is a setting to convert stereo to mono, and mono to stereo and mp3 to wav, and wav to mp3. Basically you can convert any sound file you want, to ANY format you want. WMA, MPC, AAC, OGG, ASF, etc. It's also a basic CD Ripper.

Hi guys,

Sorry, but I didn't want to start a new topic, in case people got a bit upset at that, but I'm getting quite frustrated here.

I've looked through the first 9 pages of the Nokia section, and I can't find this one thread that I remember seeing.

What I've done is downloaded a blank operator logo, but it's screwed up and where the operator logo is supposed to be, there is this white rectanglular block.

Now I remember reading in one of the threads that you could delete a logo file under the C: drive and then restart your phone and it would reset the phone back to the original logo. I've got FExplorer.

Or even better, how to make the operator logo go away. As in not a white background, but a completely blank or see-through background?

Can enough help me??

Maybe someone knows what thread I'm talking about. I've tried searching for the thread with no luck. Can't even remember what it was called.

Thanks,
:L:

Try the audacity
it converts wav to mp3 to odd and others, and vise versa,
it converts stereo to mono,
It splits files and you get only the section you want,
and it's freeeeeeeeeeeeee
