Hi all,
Just wanted to get your opinion on this.
I'm thinking of getting a new phone. My Nokia 8890 is just about dead.
I was just wondering if there is anything about the phone that justifies the price. I mean, if I sign up with a provider (with a contract) I can get phones for $0 or a fairly low price.
So what about the 7610 is so great and that justifies a cost in the $700 + USD price range?
Thanks

Nokia 7610 is a very good phone.. you can go through Michaels Review and then decide.. If you havent read it already and cant find it here is the link

It is without doubt the best Series60 phone available, although the keypad does take some getting used to. It isn't perfect though - MMC is not hot swappable, UI is still slow in places, e.g. after capturing an image and when booting up. This is made worse though by having a skin applied. Saying all that, the UI far faster than the 6600, and the SX-1 (which I think has a very plain UI, but is a great looking piece of kit).
Is the phone worth the price? Depends how much you like your gadgets. 1 megapixel maybe the highest now, but in Japan they have 2 and 3 megapixel. How long till they are available outside the far east?
White case looks a lot better than the black/red case btw.

Yes the phone's worth it, assuming your previous phone isn't a 6600.
There are some noticeable improvements though: the camera is so much better, the phone is lighter and less bulky and relatively has more memory thanks to the 64 mb rs-mmc. I would have been glad if they placed the joystick instead of the d-pad in this phone, but I can live with the d-pad.
I didn't like the black and red case previously, but that was before I actually saw the phone.
Up close, the black and red version looks like a piece of art. Even from few meters away, it is impossible not to notice it.
The white version is very nice too and Nokia is going to release new color covers for the 7610.
I buy a phone every 2 to 3 years. When I get one, I make sure the phone has specs that can tide me over from the next 3 years.

In my opinion the best thing to do is wait as the 6260 and 6630 will be out soon.

The reason why I ask is because I've had my Nokia 8890 for like 5 years. So right now I'm a little out of it in terms of knowing what features are worth the money. Hehe.
And yes, I love my gadgets.
I don't think I'd wait for the 6630 simply for the fact that I live in Canada and we don't have a 3g network.

Well they might not support it yet, but im sure they'll bring it in sometime. Plus the 6630 isnt about 3G, its about Symbian, 1.3MP cam, mp3player...

I agree with that statement. Coming from a 6600 - the phone may not be a gigantic leap forward coz there are some improvements only, not really a big difference. Plus you'd loose the IR port. But if you're coming from any other phone other than a 6600 (or an SX-1)... then I'd guess the 7610 is a good choice indeed.
I wonder.... is the 7610 better than the Sendo-X? Some are saying that it is, even though the Sendo has stereo sounds and a "normal" looking keypad. :D
cheers!

Well the keypad isnt a problem and the mono sound is berable.

^^
Mono isn't surround-sound fantastic, but yes it is bearable.
I've noticed wav files sound louder, clearer and crisper in my 7610 than mp3's. I guess I'll still have to rely on dbpoweramp for sound conversions.
I really, really, really like my phone's camera. I can even take pictures directly from my computer's monitor (though I am a bit worried if this would somehow damage the camera in some way, better stop doing it).
Like I said, my old phone was an 8250. Compared to it, the 7610's a mobile powerhouse. I still use my old phone though from time to time, I guess I'm just too sentimental.
Suprisingly, the 7610 also has blue backlight ( my absolute favorite, a cut above the rest) similar to the 8250 for its keypad.

DO NOT BUY THE 7610 if you are one of those people who uses the phone as it comes and prefers reliability over new features... my sister is one of those kinds of people and she bought 7610. She says to me "Jeff this phone is so complicated for me to do simple things like checking log and ringing people.. and why does it have so many error messages?" ... and I am inclined to agree with her that for some things it may be more complicated than is worthwhile. So if you want simplicity get a s40 device like 6230 or something... smartphones are for people who are willing to learn how to use the device, and then want to add to it... otherwise its a waste of money and time and effort trying to figure it out. If you want an idea of how these things work, Nokia offers the manuals for download on their Phone Support pages. These give a good idea of how hard it may be to adapt to the new system.
Also note.. I own a 7610 and enjoy it. I like the camera, I like watching movies, I like downloading games, etc.. its great for me.

Yeah baby!!!!!!! 7610 it is..then again..if ur just looking for phone to use as a phone..then don't buy it..a 6610 will be ideal.. don't get me wrong..the phone's great for some like me who loves taking pics, looking for themes, converting movies, listining to music while workin out and still be in touch etc..but the number of error messages it generates at times makes me wish i just had a simple phone..
but..I LOVE it. It's the best lookin phone i've ever seen..i got a 256 RS-MMC for it and it totally rocks..got tons of MP3s, a couple of fun stuff etc..keeps me occupied when there's nothing to do at times.. and the fact that it has an operating system..makes the phone virtually future proof...God! i know people who have souped up their 3650s, and it rocks!!. Bottom line.. Yes it's worth it for Looks, Features and performance.. NO it's not worth it if u are looking for a "phone-phone". oh, and it's very very decent as a phone as well..just need to get used to it.

jc_seremify: Yeah thats the prob with Series 60 phones, their smartphones, not for the average user.

The more research I do the harder it becomes to make a decision. There are so many phones out on the market now and even more coming out. argh
Nutzu1, where do you get your phones?
Do you know where in Toronto I can get my hands on a Nokia 7610 with the 850mhz band when it comes out?
Thx

8890 for 5 years, wow!
u will miss it m sure... just to remind you, series 60 phones like the 7610 does nto have the fast menu system of the 8890 which is a series 40 phone, hence if you are like me, a speed freak, you might want to reconsider on the 7610, just my .02...

Symbian does need getting used to. The nice thing about it is your phone's very customisable. You can easily remove apps which you don't want to free memory space and can replace them with other apps to your liking. You can easily rearrange menus, shortcuts and other stuff. Third party support is also possible.
