I wanna buy P900 but at the same time i was also thinking about a PDA. Can someone tell me the difference between a PDA and a phone like P900??? And why is it that i cant find anywhere in a PDA review thats talks about the colour of the PDA. Example in phones they will state things like the phone has 64K colour. Whats the difference between a PDA and Pocket PC phone????And most of all does a PDA/Pocket PC have all the function of a phone??? Things like sms, mms etc. Help is appreciated. Thanks

The P900 is a PDA. There is no difference.

Most Pocket PC devices have similar specs to each other, so I suppose they don't mention things like color depth of the display as much. But some sites have all of the information you are looking for.

A pocket PC phone edition device is a full Pocket PC PDA with phone functionality.

Most of those devices have relatively full phone features.

ok. So normally wats the colour depth of a PDA??? Much better than the P900??? And by the way it can also connect to the internet through wap gprs?? So actually P900 is a PDA more than a phone??? Does P900 has applications to edit MS files like microsoft words???

Typical PDA color depth is 4k or 65k, like most color phones these days.

And can what connect to the enternet through WAP/GPRS? A PDA that has no phone can't, if that is what you are asking.

The P900 is as much a phone as a PDA, I suppose. It does pretty much everything.

There are third party apps, supposedly, that allow a P900/P800 to edit MS Office files. I have never use any such apps, though.

Ok. Thanks Micheal. Btw in ur review about P900 u said that most PDA's screen display colour better is it because of resolution or are there other reasons to it??

No, that's not what I said:

"The P900's 65k color 208x320 pixel display is relatively small when compared against typical PDAs on the market today, but quite massive for the typical phone. The display probably covers a good 75% of the face of the phone, and is used as the primary input device for many of the P900s functions since it is touch sensitive. It is decently bright, though not as bright as some of the current PDAs on the market. It is pretty viewable in just about all lighting conditions, though again perhaps not as much so as many current PalmOS or Pocket PC devices on the market. One thing it does do better than many, though, is display colors properly. The color balance of the display is quite neutral, unlike the horrible blue shifts seen by many other devices (including the P800). Overall I would consider this a good display, if not a great one."

Oh so its something like P900 can display colour well its juz that the brightness of the screen might not be as good as a PDA's scren??? Is that what you mean???

Michael

Right, the color is great. The display's max brightness just isn't as high as some of the newer PDAs, though certainly more than adequate.

I never run my PDAs on max anyway, wastes power and it isn't needed in most situations.

Hey Michael your the one that made the Review? hehe MY GOD i fell in LOVE with the P900 after that. well i actually had my eye on it for a while but it was to expensive so i decided to go for the Z600 but then i saw this special student program that sells cell phones cheap to students www.campuzmobile.com / .se
and it costs like 120E for the phone and 23E each month for 24 months. that is NOOOT very expensive. thats all together 730E, almost as much as the phone would cost if you payed cash for it right away, so its like paying down payment. im whaiting for it to come right away.

I have a question for you though. I dont know if you have felt the Motorola A920 or anything but since my brother baught it a few weeks ago i was wondering what you think about it vs the P900? exept for the 3G that the P900 doesnt have.

Cause it hink the A920 is TOOOOO BIGG. it weighs 220 grams vs 145 grams P900. and like 40% of the face of the phone is screen. its TOO big to do anything with. and my brother is sooo proud of it hehe.
it doesnt have bluetooth and IR and he has to recharge it every day cause it has like 70h batteri time if he doesnt use it all the time which he does.

and since we dont have so much 3G cover where we live and the 3G system isnt so developed yet in sweden ( i say its still in its baby years) its just a waist of money paying for a phone that you cant use all the cool and nice stuff on. what do you think?

ok, i know this is a bit off-topic, but seeing as we're on PDAs, i wanna ask u something michael (not mike, not mickey).
im thinking of buying (if the REAL new communicator doesnt shift its ass with ANY kind of announcement) a sendo X plus a palm tungsten t3. would this be a good combo? what other devices (pocket PC included) would be suitable instead of the T3?

thanks

Well i also would like to know your comment for P900 vs A920 Micheal. But from wat i sees on other web, they stated that the screen of A920 and P800 are the same (correct me if i am wrong please~~). But since it does not have things like bluetooth and IR, the phone has nothing to be proud of really :P

Well, the T3 is really damn compact, and would likely be my pick if I didn't want a keyboard.

I'm ordering a Sony Clie UX50 tomorrow, actually. The T3 was the other PalmOS candidate.

On the PPC front, the 2000 series iPAQ has a lot to offer (if you don't need WiFi). The new 4000 series models are quite sweet, too.

But the killer new PPC for me would be the Toshiba e800 with it's VGA screen.

That said, I still probably would have gone with the T3 if I decided to go w/o a keyboard.

But from wat i sees on other web, they stated that the screen of A920 and P800 are the sameThis I can't answer. Never have seen the A920 in person.

hey
does any1 have info on the XDA II? Its definately very good in theory, but on my-symbian.com they said that the old XDA was full of bugs and tha generally PPC has some problems with bugs. any insight on that? thx

P900 allows user to attach a pic to a phone number right??? Does anyone knows if the pic look big??? Coz i am using GD87/88 and it too has that feature but the pic that comes out is so small. I hope that P900 can do a better job.

Michael

Yeah, I would expect to hear such things from a site focused on Symbian.

Anyway, reaction to the XDA II has been good so far. My friend Arne in Munich reviewed one on his site, PPCW.net, and he was quite pleased.

To Michael:

Does the UX50 you ordered come with a headphone, like the NX80V? Ie, a "remote" control?

Michael
10-31-2003, 01:09 PM
No, doesn't seem to have headphones with it.

It's quite nice, but the Sony docs are absolute rubish. I've wasted a lot of time so far due to poor docs on this thing.

The pictures in general very large, they take up almost the entire screen so i dont think you will have any problems seeing who is calling you=)

Almost all new PDA's feature 64K color screens. I have an HP h2215 and it's absolutely amazing. I have a 1GB CF card and I use my Radeon AIW graphics card to record TV and then encode it to DIVX and I always have a couple Simpsons episodes on hand when lectures get boring. I also record MY DVDs (no piracy, I promise) and watch those as well. With DIVX you can get excellent quality on a 320x240 (standard Pocket PC resolution) at only 2MB/sec!!! Therefore, I always have about five hours of stuff to watch and 400MB of MP3's on me at all times! Also, many new PDAs have built-in Bluetooth so you can surf (slowly) on your cell phone. I like the PDA and cell phone combo because when I don't need the PDA features I leave it at home. All the new PDAs are tiny too while still offering 3.5" to 4" screens. I went with Pocket PC because I can have multiple apps open at once (listen to MP3s while surfing the net) but the T3 and the new Sonys are sweet too. On the Pocket PC side, I totally agree with Michael. If you want expandabilty and a small size go with the HP H2215 (CF and SD expansion slots -- I use the SD slot for WiFi and the CF for my 1GB card). For ultra-portability and just an amazing overall PDA go with the new HP h4150. This lacks the CF slot of the h2215 but is smaller, while keeping the same size screen, and has built-in WiFi. Both these HPs have 64MB of RAM, the same fast Intel processors, and built-in Bluetooth. If you want something really cutting edge though the Toshiba e805 is coming out soon with a 4" Sharp 480x640 (VGA resolution!!!) screen, dual expansion (CF and SD), and built-in WiFi or (not and) Bluetooth (BT model only available in Europe). This looks amazing but I think I will stay away because of Toshiba's bad track record with looking after customers of their previous PDAs. Less than a year from now, though, Microsoft will come out with a new OS that fully supports VGA video and (this is really cool) DirectX extensions to improve gaming and multimedia. Intel has a new chip out soon that will fully support this too so you may want to wait until then. By then HP will have a PPC out that will be at least as good as the e805. Finally, HP is coming out with the h6000 series early next year which is basically an h4135 (same size screen, same overall size if not smaller, WiFi, Bluetooth, and SD slot) with built-in quad band GPS/GPRS, a huge battery to power all the wireless, and probably a VGA camera (reports differ on this). This will be a full-functioned PPC/Phone and should be pretty damn cool!

802.11b wireless networking. If you have a wireless network set up then you can surf the web wirelessly and read mobileburn or stream radio or whatever wirelessly. Also a lot of coffee shops and things offer WiFi internet access too.
