Good day Mr. Michael. I find the 7280 a bit baffling. If it does not have a keypad, how is text input for mobile numbers, addresses and short message service possible?
Is all of this done using that navi-spinner controller( that part which is supposedly similar to that of an I-pod)? If that is so, wouldn't it make text-input a bit, uhmm, tedious?
Of the three, it's the 7270 I wouldn't mind owning, for as long as it was all black ( I also like the coffee black 6260).

7280.. well, "wow" is right. A good niche phone I think.
7270.. maybe it's what the 7200 should have been all along. Not bad at all.
7260.. what an awful, awful phone.

Smilewarrior: you can enter contacts on your PC or Mac and then bluetooth them over. Or, you can dictate them using the image headset they also announced. You may be able to dictate numbers on the phone itself too, as it says it has a voice activated interface. Not sure though.
Dynamoo, yeah, 7270 is what 7200 could have been. However, 7200 has been Nokia's 5th best selling phone.. :) Nothing wrong with 7260 in my opionion, as it will (hopefully) be relativel cheap. I even like the design.

I think this is meant as a 2nd phone, when you go out clubbing, etc. I expect there will be a nice PC application for inputting text into the phone - how does one do that with the I-Pod, anyway (I don't have an I-Pod).

Edited down to the most scathing bits from this article (http://www.mobilegazette.com/nokia-7260.htm)
Had the 7260 been launched by itself and without the supporting 7270 and 7280 models, we would say that the 7260 is so bad that it would have a negative impact on Nokia's share price.. ..this is something you really, really don't want to draw people's attention to.. it's probably best sticking to making phone calls in a dark corner where nobody can see you.. it's not particularly small or light, but at least you won't hurt your back when you chuck it in the bin..
I can't work out if the 7200 is going to be replaced by the 7260 or not, or if it's just the 7200's big sister. I have to say, the 7280 is definitely growing on me. Might make a good SIM free as jolo says.

I have to assume there is some kludgey way of doing it in the phone, too.
The 7280 is far too fat. Almost 2CM!!!! WAAA!! How can you keep that brick in your pocket?

Dee, what are you on about? most phones are close to 2cm thick.

Michael,
ur preview of the HS-13W mentions that "No word yet on if the HS-13w will work with other Nokia Bluetooth handsets.", please note that Nokia Site mentions otherwise see this link http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,63210,00.html

Think of a lipstick, can u put that in pocket? (ok, a bigger lipstick)...
P.S. I'm really impressed by what Nokia's been doing. 7610 seems to be giving the chemistry back to Nokia just like T610 to SE, it changed the whole direction (or set the direction) for future Nokia models. My repect for Nokia slowly came back i guess. Very very good designs, but IMO it's a bit too Scandinavian (although very nice) but i notice alot of 'UN'-artistic friends dislikes 7610's design; they prefer the typical Korean handsets.
P.S.2 had the phones Nokia launched in 2004 reached 40 pieces yet???

I don't think they are close to 40 yet, but it is hard to keep track as all the regional variations etc. count. On the other hand, they decided to drop some planned phones when their sales crashed in the 1st quarter. In any case, I am 99.9% sure they will announce still more phones this year.

At the Nokia Mobile Internet Conference (or whatever it is called) in November, they always announce a lot of phones, so I expect a few more!

there is a phone demo on the nokia asian site, why dont see if they show you how to do it, m in a dial-up at the moment, so i dont dare to try it...
it good to see nokia continuing with the folder design, but i wish they stopped using the boring series 40 UI, although i guess its still the best option for most people.. and the 128x128 screen is too small other than that i like the 7270 design, really cool!

7270's screen is 128x160...
was refering to 7260 which has series 40 and 128x128 screen. i just see it as a downgrade from the 7610 which nokia could've avoided..

Does it? I don't think so. I guess the way to enter text and stuff is via voice recognition thingy...

I do have to admit, that the 7270 is pretty sexy stuff and the 7280 EXTREMELY unique. But the the 7260 is a downgrade from the 7610.
All I can see, is Nokia making 'failed-clones-of-the-7610' ... resulting in black/red phones with downgraded features (eg screen size, camera, no symbian etc)
Or ... you can say that Nokia is making a middle-end version of the 7610 (as the 7610 was extremely expensive, which is classified as a high-end)
Whichever way you take it ... I accept bets. In both Blackjack and Video Poker!

yeh.. the 7270 is the probably the best looking phone to be released in the 4th quarter (hopefully in the fourth quarter)...
Nokia has 9 phones to release in 3 months and 20 days... do u guys think they can do it??

doesnt the 7280 have touch screen..
a touch screen would be the worst thing ever on a phone like that... the screen is tiny, u can probably cover half the screen with the tip of ur finger.

The 7270 looks really sexy... and the 7280 looks really looks so cool... Would love to own one... But the 7260 Sux!!!! (IMO)

Zalameh, we were talking about announcements of phones, not actual release/sales dates.
Ipodee: obviously, one would not get 7280 for sending SMS :) Except maybe only for sending those predetermined template messages "Meet me in XX at YY o'clock"
YJT, NK_AU: although both 7260 and 7270 use similar design language as 7610, I do not really agree that you should call them a "down grade from 7610". There is no link between the two other than some design elements. Let's say they would release a look a like 7610b with VGA only and no MMC card: that would be a down grade. :)

Interesting for a phone that small that the display is not only set in landscape view (so you have to turn it sideways to use it, looking at Nokia's website under the phone demo section) but also that the screen resolution is 104 x 208 pixels, which obviously suits the odd screen shape, but goes to show that it is'nt all bad.

7260 is more of a 7250i replacement than one for the 7610. Really though it's pretty similar to the 6610i just with a crappier case.

In fact 7260 is build on same hardware as 3220. 6610i is much older hardware.

Why can't Nokia try making something new, rather than making semi-duplicates?

Simple.. marketing. Repackage it up several different ways and people will want to buy it. And of course the 7280 *is* completely new. But you're right about the 7260 and 7270, they're really the same-old-same-old.

On the 7280 ... you type the numbers (to make a call) the old school way (I think).
Rotate the ipod-scroll until you get the number. press the centre as "enter"
Rotate the ipod-scroll until you get the next number. press the centre
Maybe its the same for SMS? Keep ipod-scrolling until you get the character you want.
I may be wrong. I'm just presuming ... because I'm very curious about this 7280 ...

For all of you who are wondering about how to enter text on to 7280
I found this website... it might be helpful... there's a company called Synaptics who has a technology called MobileTouch...
who knows Nokia might be using this technology.
just go to the website and click on "View Demo"

Hmm ... looks like this MobileTouch isn't such a bad idea. In fact ... I like it.
But the 7280 is friggin huge (mainly the width and height)! Its like a beating bar ...
Should the idea be ... that they use MobileTouch (instead of a keypad) to try and make the phone smaller?

It's a little shorter and wider than the Haier P5 and P6 which are the only phones I can think of with a similar form factor.

Cuz it's what we like to do :) Actually, it's always a bit suprising when you get one of these in your hands and you get a read idea of size and features.

so that means u have to buy the bluetooth keyboard? or the bluetooth imaging headset? wouldnt people be discouraged to buy the fone if they have to also buy other parts to make it work efficiently?? buying accessories is one thing..but this is different...
