I recently got rid of some apps on my 6600, but their icons are still there. Nothing happens when an icon is 'clicked'. And i also 'beamed" a file explorer to it and after installatioon i cant delete the installation file
Any help would be appreciated

Attempt rebooting the phone and checking for the rememants of the programs directories because if they are in use it probably won't have deleted them and there will be files left in them, rebooting it should close all running applications down. Also, they may be corrupted in which case you might need to try something a little strong like a hard reset on your phone if it's really annoying you.

Ok, first check in appman and look for any autoexec (auto execute) programs that may be related to the thing you removed (did it automatically start every time you turned the phone on?). Failing that look for things that may be assosiated with it, for example, pre-installed on the MMC is sloved dictionary/thes. removing the Sloved app doesn't get rid of all the different languages the dicionary comes in and they still appear listed within appman until you remove them all (the s60 phones aren't like pc software in that it only removes specifically what you tell it to leaving everything else behind - or maybe that's quite alot like pc software :) )
Failing that use Fxplorer or Seleq to go into the MMC E:\System\Apps and look for a folder that has the same name as (or contains files with the name of) the prog you're trying to remove. If you've installed the app to the phone memory then you'll need to go into C:\system\apps and find the relevant folder. A simpler and less scary way to remove apps from the phone memory is to use the 'restore to factory defaults' option from the settings menu, this will restore the phone to its original condition (notice just the phone, mmc apps will remain) and is the same as entering the *#7370# code (not sure if that's the right code) for the (apparently) 'hard' reset...
The final option assumes that it's a program installed on the mmc... Get a card reader or other device that can connect directly to a pc and delete the offending program/icon from the mmc via your pc. You will need to do this in order to remove the original install file for file explorer i believe.

By a hard reset, do you mean *#7370# which wipes EVERYTHING off the phone? If still no luck take it to a service centre.

Yes I meant *#7370#, this does wipe everything you've changed but resets the phone to original factory settings (it's just a shortcut to it)... Type it in and a prompt will appear warning you that everything will be reset to default... This will clear up any random files on the phone and put the phone back to how it was when you took it out the box... You will lose all your calendar appointments, messages on the phone and notes etc. But it cleared up my 'phantom theme icon' problem (I uninstalled a theme and it corrupt the whole of the 'themes' section of the phone, so when i clicked the icon it just threw me out to the main menu instead of opening the themes menu).... Might be worth a try, but make sure you back up somehow... Unlike me who just did it and lost alot of stuff

thanks guys, i used a file explorer program, and i could not find anything. I can now confirm it has something to do with the mmc.
I removed the mmc and the icons wernt there. i dont have a card reader. so now wot do i do>??
Haiz. This is quite frustrating. Series 60 reminds me of pocket PC. Especially the way the
redraws are so sluggish. Its like you press a button and the GUI appears part by part

This slow redraw is normally caused by fragmented MMCs or filesystems. Some of the more powerful file-explorers can format MMCs, but otherwise, just manually delete the system folder on the MMC (it's hidden by default - find an option to turn it back on). *#7370# won't reset the MMC I'm afraid.
I'm not convinced restore factory defaults is the same thing as *#7370#, on series 40 phones, it just restores the settings part of the phone. Either way, just make sure you do a backup (there is a backup to MMC option in the Memory application preinstalled on your phone).

In response to 'reset to factory settings', stingray says (in another thread) that it just restores some *settings*, not the whole flash RAM, because he/she tried it.

Im using that freeware file viewer that everyone seems to use. I sent the .sis from my laptop to the phone via IR. For some reason everytime i try to delete the installation file from my messages inbox, it says its 'in use'.
Anyway im pretty sure (as i said in my previous post) that the MMC has something to do with the icons. I think the previous owner installed some apps there. For some reason they are not appearing on the "manager" , maybe due to improper deletion. Which folder on the MMC are the apps usually installed to?

They are installed to a hidden folder called 'system'.

In response to 'reset to factory settings', stingray says (in another thread) that it just restores some *settings*, not the whole flash RAM, because he/she tried it.Well I tried it on my 66' firmware 3.42.1 and it reset everything I'd customized added to the phone (it even cleared up folders added to the phone memory by other apps and I lost some of the saved settings for these). It also cleared the dictionary (custom words) calender, messages (on phone obviously) as well as removing all the theme folders (each theme installed has its own folder in 'skins' folder with another one created if you customize that theme). It doesn't just restore the settings like s40... Anyway a 6600 is s60 so you wouldn't expect it to do the same thing would you?
If you still doubt me then type the code in, the prompt that appears will confirm that this is just a shortcut to restore factory defaults, presumably added in case the actual menu itself fails (as my main menu icons have failed in the past - not the menu itself though) and the phone will still be able to be reset/restored. The s60 reset does more than a s40. Trust :)

Well, I do trust you (partially) that's why I'm not willing to risk the reset on my N-Gage. I realise it should do more than an S40 reset, but it doesn't completely obliterate the flash RAM to my knowledge.
