Well it's finally here guys. Michael has spent ages to do this review, and frankly, I think it's his best work. Ever.

thanks for the great review michael.
can't wait to get one of my own...

one question though.
is the screen on the p900 about the same size as the p800?

was wondering if a p800 screen protector would work on the p900?

Very informative review, I am interested more in the volume levels of the mp3/wav/midi ringtones. Living in NY, some areas of the city can be very loud.

Dear Michael,

First off, great review and thank you very very much for it! Again, your review is making me consider very very seriously in getting a P900!

However, noticed a few things in your review that I feel I have to comment on. It may possibly be of help to others reading your review and my post here.

Firstly, regarding the lack of a proper profile function. This is true and very unfortunate for the P900, but i have read somewhere that one option is perhaps the possiblity of using the themes function to change profiles i.e. one theme=one profile? As I understand, within each theme, one can also separately configure the ringtone type, volume, etc specific for that individual theme so that each theme will also have its unique ringtone, etc... is that right?

Secondly, regarding the sms request for return receipt, I believe there is such a function in the P900. There is certainly that function in the P800 (with the firmware update released several months ago), so it can't be that the P900 doesn't have this?

Just my few cents worth. I hope you don't mind my comments above. But beyond whatever I said, I know its not easy writing such a long review and its always easier to comment than to do the actual writing! In ANY event, GREAT JOB. FANTASTIC WORK. THANK YOU. AGAIN!! :)

It is not a viable profile system.

Take a look at the P800 vs. P900 gallery on the main site.

Michael, in your review you said that you are a keyboard guy, have you consider the Treo 600? Any chance of a review? You can pretty much do anything with one hand with the 5-way D-pad.

We are waiting for a Treo 600. No ETA yet.

And while the Treo does suit me quite well in most regards, it is missing Bluetooth. That rules it out for me.

Dear Michael,

Oh heck! No sms request for return receipt? Oh nooooooooo! Hopefully they would include this in the commercial sets!

When do you think you would be able to update your firmware to the commercial version? Any ETA where you are at?

I sent some folks at SE a message earlier today about getting a firmware update.

No response yet.

but didnīt they announce in one of their latest press releases that this option is available ONLINE from now on?!

i think iīve read this... so one doesnt has to go to a SE Serive Point any longer.

They did, but I think it was an accident. This service is definetely not up, it will still be a while till they get it working.

Right, they didn't intend for that to be made public yet.

I did ask them for early access to it, though, so that I could upgrade my P900.

Have not gotten a response yet.

Michael

The web based firmware upgrade is not ready yet, but they are trying to see if I can get access somehow.

And yes, you can use any MP3 or other sound file for the message notification.

thx michael..

but i have q regarding the OTA firmware upgrade

isn't it will take ages to download the file or maybe it's just kind of patch which is small. And this OTA firmware upgrade is not limited by whereabout the user right ?? As long they have GPRS then the user can upgrade ??

I don't think it would be a patch. The way I think it will work is that the user will download an update utility to their computer and then connect the P900 using the SyncStation. The program will then update the firmware using the cable. This is how the S55 worked, and I think it is probably the easiest/safest method for user upgradeable firmware.

The reason I don't think GPRS will be used is that it would require the "phone" function of the P900 to be working during the upgrade, and also would mean a huge bill for 95% of GPRS users around the world.

In total agreement with you Sid.

Over GPRS would also be too slow. May even risk losing some information or code along the way. In any event, most likely not a patch. It will be something bigger as it used to take my local SE service centre a bit long to flash a new firmware.

As you have said Sid, cable is the safest!

While a patch is quite viable, and often efficient, I suspect that it will be a full firmware dump.

The problem with a patch is that the patch will only work if the original files are just so, meaning that if a patch worked for R2A, it is very unlikely that it could work for R2B - even if the end result was to be something like R3.

So you would end up needing either a patch for each step in between, or a a patch would have to be made for each possible combination (R2A -> R3, R2B -> R3, R2C -> R3, etc...)

A complete firmware update would be simpler.

Great Review... Id just like to ask which screen do u think is better... the GX20 screen or the P900...???

The GX20's screen is better. Firstly, the GX20 has a releatively high-res screen, but it is quite small (in terms of physical size). Meanwhile, the P900's screen is high-res, but it is also large in size. This means that the GX20 can pack in more pixels, making the image sharper. Also, the P900 has a pad placed over the screen that is used for handwriting recognition, making it's image not as good.

There is Messege Delivery Report in P900 (in SMS).

Hi!

Would anyone be so nice to give me some more info about battery life? I have heard that battery runs empty rather quickly and one needs to recharge the batteries every two days, even when not having used the P 900.

Is this true?

No way! I've used my p900 for playing games, listening to mp3s, making calls, texts etc etc, and it still stands at 23% after 5 days.

Thank you for the review.

I was just wondering what the limit in seconds was for recording a video with it?

For a message video it's 11 seconds. But it's unlimited for ordinary video. (Only limited by how much memory you have).
