I'm just wondering if Michael or any of you "MobileBurn" people had a chance to lay your hands on the upcoming series 60 Nokia 6600 (http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,33210,00.html) yet?
Found lots of relase date rumors on the net. Anyhting you guys know about this particular phone?

i was waitng for it also but was told it was going to come out at a healthy 6-800 range... i saw them on Ebay for 800.00 last week and would rather wait for the price drop. Got the 6100 instead for now.

The ebay ones are very likely to be fraudulent. The 6600 hasn't been released anywhere in the world yet.
I have mixed feelings about the 6600. I'm interested in one because it would be a little smaller than my 3650, and hopefully it's built better too. (My first 3650 died and I had to replace it; my second one just feels poorly made.)
New system software, and MIDP 2 support, are also appealing, as is the 65k color screen.
But I certainly don't intend to pay $600USD for such an upgrade! So I'll hope it's available for less here in the States. (Yes, I know it's not officially to be sold here.)

From what I was told by a rep at Expansys it should be available in the 500 USD range. 800 would be utterly rediculous. As for these famous ebay people... STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!! Alot of accounts have been hacked and they are listing fraudulent auctions. I have yet to see one authentic auction with an original photo of any kind listed. And by authentic I mean ones that were not taken from resource site such as Mobile Burn!!
I am impatiently waiting for this phone to come out!!! It looks awesome... and of course staying true to my favorite color I would have to go with the rose toned one!!
I heard a rumor that the 6600 won't be released in the US... Is there any truth to that??

What is the release date anyway? For Australia as well if anyone knows.

Darla, whether the 6600 will or will not be carried by any of the carriers in the U.S. is a good question. We just have to wait and see. To me it's not relevant, I'm in Canada and I'll probably buy my 6600 unlocked off Expansys.

I can confirm that. At this time, there are absolutely no plans for the 6600 to be officially released in the U.S. That info is straight from a Nokia spokesperson, as of yesterday.
Of course you will still be able to import it from third parties like Expansys.
Hopefully the reason is that a version with GSM 850 is in the works... (fingers crossed!)

I was in NokiaHouse a couple of days ago, and the spokesman said that 6600 will be released (at least here in Finland) now in September. And the price will be about the same that 7650 was when it was released (about 700 €). You have to remember, that the price here in Finland is different to many countries, cause here the mobile operators don´t subvent phones. So we pay the total price.
I got the chance to test nearly all phones - The 6600 was nice. It didn´t suprise me. The screen was great, only negative thing was the joystick; in 7650 it´s soft, but in 6600 it felt more plastic. Well, anyway, I´ll buy the phone when it wil be released.

I want the 6600 bad. I have a Panasonic at the moment and although it is a good phone, I only got it cos Nokia had not got anything that touched it at the time, e.g 65k screen 16 chord polyphonic etc. I miss Java though.
Now that I have found my match in mobile heaven, i.e 65k screen, 24 chord poly, smartcard and 6mb internal memory, I am going loopy waiting.
I am hoping it is no more, handset only than £400. I have seen Expansys at £387, but hope for a little cheaper still.
Maybe the Ngage and SX1 being released will help.
Does anyone have an update rumour or dare I say fact as to UK price and/or release date?
;)
If you want a complete, non professional , but real test of the 6600.
If you read french.

Merci. Il était très instructif. Je suis bien plus excité maintenant. Il semble plus petit que j'avais craint. Il me rappelle d'une version de couleur de Motorola Accompli 008. Merci encore.

It looks smaller than I had feared.
You kidding me?? That sh*t looks big! Thought it'd be much smaller than that, like T610 small. It may look a fraction smaller in length than the 7650, but it's gained size in girth.
That's a tubby phone right there...

I expected a larger phone for the amount of technology inside that's all.
If you look at phones which boast a v large colour screen they are usually bigger than your average mini breast pocket active flips. Maybe it is trying to give a PDA feel.
Compared to the 3650 and 7650 it is smaller.
I was merely stating I expected it to be larger than it looks.

Sorry, didn't mean to hit a nerve there!:D
There's no need for Nokia to be building large phones for no good reason in my mind. Yes it's got all the features, but then there are quite a few out there that do the same- and more- but in a smaller, more travel friendly build. And the fact that it houses a removable memory card slot is no excuse for the width of this mobile. MiTac's smartphones are a case in point here for rem/mem card slot's built in to a slim handset (when opened), and Nokia have been around the block long enough to know this. If it had advanced PDA features, or a touchscreen/stylus I could understand & forgive the size. But it doesn't. The size of the 3650 was scandalous in my eyes for the features it had, and Nokia aren't learning from their errors.
I guess I'm just growing tired of my 7650. Shouldn't take it out on the 6600. Sorry.
Just found some new pics of the 6600

I dont think it is any bigger than a 3310 and how many people carry those puppies about.
I have just found out that Krusell (quality mobile and PDA case company) have no plans to do a case for this phone. They do not have the specis. I will need a case cos there are no replaceable covers.

Ok ppl, first post here so be gentle!!
From my point of view the 6600 is the best size it can be. Lets face it what is this handset designed for? Imaging, gaming and XHTML access, now what is the point of having a lovely colour game/pic/web page that you have to squint at to see?
Now it could just be me, but have you ever seen a pic on a 6610 and then seen the same pic on a 7650? The 7650 wins hands down as you can actually see the image clearly. Likewise with gaming and browsing.
I have used many many phones (working in the industry) and it is my opinion that if you want a small phone to flash about to your mates, don't gripe when it makes your pictures look awful and Rayman 3 is unplayable! But if you want a usable, quality effective piece of kit with all the latest guns, gdgets and get-away gear, be ready for it to be larger than an 8210!
Lol :D

Hear Hear!!!
I have a Panny GD87 at the mo and it is small and fairly functional.
But I am willing to swop looks for a camera that is not embarrassing to show the pics to, and Java. AT the mo, I am stuck with Tetris, Herding Sheep and my Gameboy Advance SP.
Although my Gameboy is good, it is not flattering at a bus stop when you are playing it and getting conversation from 9 year olds. Not at 32 years old anyway!!

Hi,
I've had a go on one - i work in the industry and we get trial handsets 6-8 weeks before they are released to the public
Very, VERY nice phone - one of the best Nokia have ever made in terms of features and compactness - it's the features of a 7650 with the reliablility of a 6310i - it's a truely great phone - roll on 3G for orange at the end of the year :)

I guess there are critcisms for every new phone. The screen is too small, the phone is too big...
It's like the potatoe bag principle. Your bag of potatoe chips is only 1/2 full and stuffed full of air. This is because they want to make sure the chips don't get broken in transit. Here's a phone you've just spent a couple hundred dollars/pounds on. Yes sure they could probably make it smaller in some ways, but then you drop and what happens? now you've got two phones and a detachable camera :-P.
It's not that big of a phone for what you get with the display and Nokia quality. Add a camera of that resolution and I'd say you're doing pretty good.
3650: a big phone.
6600: a nice phone.

have you explored the address book and calendar features? any immediate feedback?
I don't think that the 6600 is that big especially considering all the features the phone has.
Check out this photo, compared to the 7250 lengthwise there is nothing in it

7250: 105 x 44 x 19 mm, 73 cc
3650: 130 x 57 x 26 mm, 139 cc
6600: 108.6 x 58.2 x 23.7mm, 113cc
So its a lot shorter than 3650 and thinner too, so the volume is a bit smaller. I think that is important and what the thing actually feels like in your hand.
This is not to say that it could have been smaller, not sure if there is anything inside those curvy sides? 3650 seems to have a lot of empty space in it.
wolvesfanette
10-01-2003, 04:43 AM
The curvy sides may have been mandatory to fit those remaining buttons on, without making the keypad too unusable.
The keypad itself appears to be squashed down to make room for the very large screen, and I suspect that any more squashing would make it difficult to use?
Just a thought?
Michael
10-01-2003, 08:33 AM
I dunno, I tend to think the buttons were put there to fill the space left by the curvy sides.
My guess is the width was a design decision, not an engineering one.
They wanted a handset that you would carry in your hand to show the world..not one that would easily fit in a pocket ;)

I know that there is 6mb internal memory, and a 32mb memory card with it but does anyone know the answer to the following questions:?
1. What is the maximum card you can use in this phone? (I thought it was 128mb, but I cannot find where I got that from now)
2. What type of card is it? Is it a standard MMC, SMC or SD?
The price of the official Nokia 64mb memory card is £104! I want to know if there is cheaper.
Many thanks.:p
Dear Nokia fans.
The nokia 6600 is on this site for pre order that means it not grey or fake, cause it is still to be released .

the price they give £331.00 exc VAT (overseas shipping)
£388.93 inc VAT (inside uk )
thats about $644 .
give it 2 months and the price drops !!

Size is a relative matter. If you compare the size of a Nokia 6600 to T610, you should also compare sizes of display they have.
6600 display size is 1.76x2.08inch=about 4.47x5.28cm, T610 1.28x1.60inch=about 3.25x4.06cm and it would have been a rather difficult task to put an display sized like that in a phone sized like T610, wouldn´t you agree?

Nobody can't compare a t610 with 6600, well 6600 is completly difrent phone, with symbian os and large screen, you can compare them to phone from same category like 3650, Siemens SX1, Samsung SGH D700, etc..

No.
No difficulties to put a 4.47cm wide screen to a 4.4cm wide phone... ;)
The Roo

No difficulties whatsoever.
All you do is cut off the corners at the bottom of the phone and stick them on the corners of the display that stick out - using blu-tac (for that cool blue trendy look). The display will now look inplace whilst retaining the original height measurements. You can also use blu-tac to 'polyfiller'-in the holes at the bottom corners. Wrap the whole thing up in sticky-back plastic for that shiny glossy look.
NB. phone operation is not guaranteed after implementing this procedure.

1. I quess the maximum is what's available
2. It's a MMC and no need to buy only "official Nokia"-card. For example Kingston has 32, 64 and 128 MMC cards. But don't just take my word on it, go to http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/models.asp?root=us

A Finnish mobileseller, who keeps an internetshop and discussion forum (only in finnish) and is known about as a one, who really knows what he's talking about, has put Nokia 6600 on sale as a pre-order and informs, that estimated delivery time is at week 43 (20.-24.10). So, that 23.10 sounds like a right estimate.

I agree with the people who think this phone is just too big. I knew it would be fat around the middle due to the oval shape but the depth is what I really object to. If you look at the pics while the phones are lined up on their sides, the 6600 is just as fat as the 3650. That is just rediculous. My PDA has CF and SD slots and a much nicer 3.5" display and yet is almost one centimeter thinner (HP h2215 - 15.4mm, Nokia 6600 - 23.7mm)!!! Now that really is obscene! What's more, the P900 will only be 8mm longer, 3mm deeper, and 8g heavier (not to mention a mm thinner) and that is clearly a lot more to fit into a device that size. This device doesn't have the portability a good phone should have or the features that a business device/PDA or MP3 player or whatever should have. I was really interested in this phone until I saw the depth. Either you'll have to carry it on your belt and look like a dork or put it in a jacket pocket. I couldn't imagine putting this into my jeans pocket and going to a club or anything. Sorry for the rant, this device does have great features but I am really disappointed about the size. I thought this would be my next phone. The search continues...

Just to add, if you want a phone this big (and expensive) that does everything get the HP h6000 when it comes out. It'll be a full-on Pocket PC with bluetooth, WiFi, 4 band GSM, 3.5" color touch screen, blazing fast processor, loads of 3rd party software, much better games (even gameboy, snes, playstation emulators), up to 1gb on an SD card (and more when capacity increases), a REAL web browser (Pocket Internet Explorer),... Plus it'll be thinner and roughly the same volume (maybe even less due to the width and probably lighter too) with a huge battery guaranteeing all-day use (it's gonna be double the capacity of any PDA so far to enable full-time wireless). What's more you can use it with add-on bluetooth GSM devices and a whole range of other equipment. But the best part -- it'll cost less than $600. Now, with all this in mind, what is it that makes this phone so great? If the size was small, the 6600 would definately be worth it. But it's not, so I figure if you're going to have some huge clunky device that's going to cost lots of money, get one which can at least do ANYTHING you can dream of. I wouldn't get this HP because I know I would look like a geek but at least I would be a really connected geek! To sum up, it is DEFINATELY possible in this day and age to make a device with the features of the 6600 (screen size/quality, camera, advanced OS, memory card, good battery, bluetooth) that is significantly smaller at the same price. The HP is overkill, but with the type of technology that has gone into that you could make a smaller phone. Maybe Nokia should get someone else to design the phones and just write the software (which really is their real strength). I believe that to not make this phone smaller shows a lack of engineering ability.
hkhawk
10-12-2003, 12:44 AM
I am sorry, I am still annoyed. The screen of the 6600 is about 1.35 times the size of that of the T610 and yet the volume (and I DID try to factor for the curvy sides) is about 1.65 times that of the T610 (140,000mm cubed vs. 85,000mm cubed). Now that is just rediculous! I know I am comparing an area to a volume but the other components should not all be that much larger!

everyone has his own opinion. If it's the size, 6600 did a good job, it's the size of other series 40 phones, so it WILL fit ur pocket. It's not so fat from what I see from the pictures, besides, it's not released yet. The phone is great that's my opinion.

Um, it's 56% larger than a 7250 and 88% larger than a 6100 by volume. It is even 27% larger than a 5100, which is a reasonably large phone by today's standards.
It is much bigger than any series 40 phone.
But it is still smaller than the other Series 60 phones like the 3650 and 7650. It is just barely wider than a 3650, but shorter and thinner. So when compared to those phones it is a step in the right direction.
But I wouldn't exactly say that is really all that pocketable. Technically it will fit, of course, but that is taking up a bit of room. I never found the 3650 to be practical for sticking in jeans pockets, for example, though I could deal with the 7650.

It would be interesting to see how it fits into the pocket.
True that it's width is so.. wide, but from the many live pictures I see (comparing it with the 7250) it shows it is slightly taller than the 7250, and it's not noticable to me. I agree that the width is far way wider than the 7250, but still as you said from the size of the phone, Nokia is going to the right direction so far :D

What comes to size of 6600, I'm sure there is a reason for that and I'm also sure, that Nokia could make this phone smaller, if that would be the key factor (not that I have any knowledge, what comes to making phones, this is just opinion).
I, like most of the writers here (I think), have only see pictures of 6600, so it's kind of a difficult to say, how does it feel for real, but first impressions to me is, that the keypad is big enough to be usable and the round (and maby "fat") design makes it also easy to use with one hand (and keep it in hand too).

Just visited that site and the estimated delivery time has changed to week 44 (27.-31.10).:(

I've called this post that because some dealers don't know etc..
The 6600 is already released in the UK - it hails from the north and works southwards - it's on sale £180 on contract or £239 PAYG in Newcastle at the moment - and is rumoured to be £40 contract and £329 PAYG - why we pay more in the south i don't know
I recently bid for one on E-bay and was ripped off - paid but never got my phone ( and not the only one it seems) so ai m getting one on the 28th from up north

Are you waiting till you get paid ;)
Or, do you know they will be cheaper somewhere?

Omega, did you pay the seller using a money order or a bank debit? If so, forget your money.
See my first post on this thread...encountered plenty of sellers who were helpfully shipping the phone "for free" but needed western union or bank debit ONLY. Now, that has fraudulent written ALL over it. Moment I talked about escrow, they never replied.
FRom now on, make it a rule...any transaction that involves more than 100$(or GBP), pay using your credit card via paypal(not bank account). That way, you can charge it back. If you pay using ur bank account, you have to depend upon paypal getting the funds back, which isn't exactly a feasible solution!

ANYWAY.
look, you people stop deluding yourselves. the nokia 660 aint a looker or pocket-friendly. this is NOT a degradation of the phone itself as it is a pretty cool fully-featured mobile and does loads of cool stuff, with plenty of expansion capabilities (through mem card and also software-wise), net-browser, mp3, etc etc.
there was even a time when i wanted to buy it myself.
but stop all this nonsense about how the device could not have looked any other way, or the features call for it to be bulky, or it looks great! please.
it was either mike, sid or sean that wrote somewhere in these forums that nokia have the intention of making mobiles that you'd have to hold [some of] their phones in your hand and show the world their mobiles, rather than keep them descretely hidden in your pockets. sounds about right. and it looks like the case here as well.

He chose Arsenal. And why?The very same season he joined Arsenal, he won the double-something he had NEVER won despite playing at Totteringham since youth football, and he would not have won even the league cup there, leave alone a double.
Oh, he also won the charity shield, he retained the FA cup(first time in decades that that's been done), he plays European football, yada, yada, yada.
Looks like he made a wise choice....something Carr would like to emulate? bwahahahahahahahahaha ;)

I disagree, I think the phone looks great, and it's only marginally bigger than my current phone. It's smaller than the 7650 and about the same size as the SX1 but a bit deeper.
but stop all this nonsense about how the device could not have looked any other way, or the features call for it to be bulky, or it looks great! please.Looks are a personal issue so it isn't nonsense and I don't think it's bulky, I don't consider the larger 7650 to be too large, sure it's big, but fits in the pocket well enough.
Least we agree about football teams though. :)

I can't really tell you that the 6600 is a big step forward in comparison to the 3650, all though it does have several advantages. The latest symbian version (7.0 instead of 6.1) is much better in use (I tested the phone in August) then the 3650. Which accounts for the fact that I could not detect any bugs in the 6600 software (not even after a week of tests).
The colour screen is 64k instead of the standard 4K+, nice, but not really why you would buy the phone. It has a digital zoom camera and a Bigger Internal memory.
What size is concerned, It's just a bit to big for me, but the phone is smaller then the 3650. So in the end you get used to the "chunky" stile. I like the phone, although I would hold on just a little longer before buying a new Nokia phone, seeing that the new Communicator might be just around the corner ;-)

The 6600 is indeed a nice phone. But I am just curious why Nokia has not chosen to include EDGE technology into the phone. I know this is still a bit new, but if their target group is business users, wouldn't high speed data access be desirable? Is it still unstable technology or is it just to get the "power phone users" to buy a new phone next year?

Nowicom.com has it for 850 Euros. That translates to more than 1000 US$ for me. I would rather wait for 10 days and buy the p900 off expansys.us if i were thinking about buying 6600. They have the price up as 800 and a ETA of 10 days.it has more features than the 6600. But both 6600 and p900 are too big for me.
am interested in the z600.if only it had a speakerphone too......sigh
anyone use speakerphone then? in my experience it's neverworked well in any phone, the only use i have for it is for when i'm on hold with customer services or if i'm calling a mate from bed when i've just woken up....it certainly wouldn't put me off buying a nice phone!

Feitaboogie,
Format the 128mb card on N6600 first
Try opening your 32 mb card without PC suite just with card reader.
Go to your "System" root directory then the "app" one.
You will see the opera file.
Copy and paste to your desktop.
Put the 128 mb card in your reader now and go to the "system" root directory.
If there is a file called "app" put it in there.
If not, I would create a new folder called "app" in there to be sure and put the desktop "opera" in there.
I think this should work?
If not, then TAXI!!
:)
