I dunno, I was just thinking, if the S700 was made into a smartphone - it will definitely sell more, in fact, it will give the 6600 and 7610 a run for its money. Don't you think?

I wonder what's behind the logic of not making a p-series without a touchscreen?

and i think it is a multimedia phone which does all the things a smart phone does and does them better(except the third party applications which we do not buy)

It also means more royalties for Nokia doesn't it (I don't know how Symbian is controlled)? Which would make it cost more too.

I suppose the benefit is that maybe SE will be able to get their finger out and produce a better smartphone than Nokia's previous close-but-not-close-enough efforts, but then I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway, you can bet they'll be extremely pretentious and include a MS Duo slot on the thing, just to make alternative manufacturer users upgrade to another hideously overpriced memory format (in fact, MS Duo is currently THE most expensive format, especially it's been out so long).

But sometimes even SE won't get it perfect, like why did they only put a VGA camera on the K700 and slap 40mb of RAM in it (a very good amount) then say it's an MP3 player when 40mb will hold about 15 tracks maximum? Even I would've settled for an MS Duo slot, at least it would become a viable 6230 competitor then.

It would be nice if SE did produce a smartphone (non-UIQ) to press Nokia a bit, a bit like if Nokia made a UIQ one. Maybe I won't switch from what I'm used to, but if SE does make a stunner and at a decent price (none of this, P900 pricing nonsense) then I suspect Nokia will follow suit.

UI for Symbian is already split into 2 groups, UIQ by Symbian and Series 60/80/90 by Nokia.

SE may consider to follow Nokia's style and built another proprietary UI. However, this will split the variation of UI for Symbian even further, which is no good for Symbian, developers and consumers.

There is also a possible reason for SE not creating it's own UI. Sometime, I wonder why UIQ doesn't come with full supports for one-handed operation, isn't it a basic for smartphones? The only reason I can think of is Nokia, it disapproved so that it can control the market with it's proprietary UI. (PS: Nokia isn't the biggest share holder at that moment, but there are still some methods for Nokia to force Symbian to accept it's request, :)

Anyway, UIQ 3.0 will finally allows both pen-based and one-handed smartphones with a minimum of extra effort from the developers. (see http://www.uiq.com/uiq3)

That looks very promising indeed. I just hope.... that they'd price it cheaper than what they normally do.

i regard se's p900/p910 series as a much better smartphone than any of nokia's own series60 models. so what if it is operated with a stylus? it's one of the things that makes it a smartphone (which, by definition is a hybrid device that brings out the best functionality of both a PDA and a mobile phone).

Yeah, stylus-able phones can be a good thing of a bad thing. The bad point being it's not very easy to use with one hand...

stylus able phones, lol i don't use the stylus. my hands aren't small nore big, there normal and i can use my P800 with one hand without any problems. been using it this way for more then a year.

Good point. But i think the 'Smartphone' definition had changed very much since i heard of it. I first heard of it from Microsoft, they claim they're gonna venture into a whole new market where smartphones will rule, back then; the definition of smartphones are phones that plays music, video clips, emails, games etc. Thats when they trigger the birth of Symbian from the terrified major telcos.

But now, we regard smartphones as those with open OS'... those that allows us to customize the functions of our phones. Remember back then when we buy phones? we asked bout functions. If now we're going for smartphones, needn't worry bout functions i guess.

I'm really considering whether to get the full blown P910 or just reside on a S700 which can really do what i want most of the time. (P900 users, of all the extra 3rd party softwares, did u guys ever use it all the time?>) S700 takes decent pics, plays mp3, SYNCML<--- most important thing. i mean, it's already quite a smartphone....

Um, I find it very hard to use the P900 with just my fingers, and you get fingerprints all over the screen. :( I miss full-keypad phones...

Just today SE confirmed in an interview wirh Swedish magazine Mobil that during next year simpler and cheaper smartphones based on UIQ 3.0 will be presented by SE.
