Is it me or is Nokia dead as a company?
I mean nothing in their line up has me as excited as the Moto V3 or the P910i.

They used to have the best menu system, but I think the others have caught up now. They just seem to be lacking that killer phone.

Just my opnion.

but se and moto are doin it day by day
tell me of any nokia model which matches the p910 or the mpx

incidentally, no matter how the p800/900/910 series morphs, it still looks pretty blocky and big...

motorola spots one of the worst menu navigation, yesterday and today...

so in the end, each has its strength...nokia hasnt even fully released what they showed at the Showcase in May/Jun

Live and hope, I still don’t see anything on their website that makes me all ‘moist’ :)

Nokia are a classic case of resting on ones laurels. For so long they have been people’s automatic choice for a mobile phone, but I do believe that the other vendors have caught up.

It seems that if a company is on top for about 10 years they inevitably begin to decline after that.

Mobile phones have become more than just a communication device; they are a life style statement. Disagree with me if you will, but if I am wrong in my assessment, why are there so many websites around showcasing the latest and greatest? I mean the technology amongst the different vendors is pretty much the same, now the differentiator is design. The Razr V3 has all the features of a modern mobile phone, as do Nokia but the V3 is leagues ahead in design.

true, that's nothing overly sensational with nokia's upcoming offerings... the only phone that maks me feel a little 'moist' the way u put it is SE S700 but the thought of it not being 3G and using memory sticks kinda put me off...

i guess the only thig that would make me sit up will be a 3G symbian phone with dual cam and at least 1.3 mp camera with flash...hope that's not too much to ask for

id like to agree nokias dead but ever think about how usually their phones announced or talked about always sound crap but when their out it just skyrockets in popularity? 2 such examples are 6230 and 7610. the next line up mostly sux but the once that are great are the 6260 and 6630. just somehow or the other they always manage to pull through. gota give them credit for that.

Ruler_70
08-27-2004, 01:25 AM
I agree with shaheen, i was very sceptical about nokia's new announcements but now ive grown to really like the 6630 and unless they announce anything else before its release il prob consider getting one.

cant seem to understand how would nokia be dead if they got the best and the most complete small candy-bar form factor phone at the moment that sells like hot cake, and it is even reported out of stock in some places??? to top it of, they got the most sold smart-phone, and they just acquired symbian??? how could they be dead??? and then what does sexy got to do with a dead co. or not a dead co??? i have always thought that sexy is refered to the phone it self... and as far as we can see, nokia was the 1 who started experimenting with fashion phones, well, i go to credit siemens as well... how could they be dead, when in 2 months time we will see the most complete communicator on the shelves, that none of the other companies has something to rival it, well at least for now???

was it last year, that wired magazine placed nokia among the top 5 cos. that everybody envies and leaders of their respective field???

in any case, i just cant figure out how could they be dead, if they keep on producing phone that always live up to what matters most on a phone-> good RF, good bat life, easy to use, and over all great performance??? which, if you look at it most people wil look for this 1st, then after that other functionalities.... anyway, just MHO

i think nokia will continue to be as they are - nokia phones will come one every once in a while (twice or thrice as fast as other phone manufacturers do) and try everything and anything to catch a good market... they're still the market leader, by the way...

shaheen
08-27-2004, 03:36 AM
i personally would like to see SE take over the throne or even moto but here is a coupla problems why they both never will

SE
1. always announce phones that have functions already in the market
2. always take too long to release phones
3. insane NEW phone price. really very absurd compared to others
4. value drops too fast.
5. not much class and style involved its more like their trying to build an already built phone

motorola: i think they might actually get 2nd spot soon. their new lineup is excellent
1. their phones are more concentrated on US market. not worldwide
2. they make too many different phones, like smartphone, ppc phone like the mpx etc so thus decreasing the quality factor and detail factor put into other phones as they got too many to release.
3. their phones are either too cheap so value drops like the E398 or too expensive like the v600(for its category), mpx, mpx220.
4. because of the above reasons value drops alot. their phones become practically nothing compared to other phones
5. alot of bugs and their OS is always criticised

well thats the way i see it anyway. nokia basically kind of got the perfect plan, stay simple but hit the main vein of the phone market. they cater very well to everyones personal preference. (accept for touchscreen though). like for me for instance, i want a simple smartphone, that looks good, has a decent cam and is pretty wicked, badabing badaboom. 7610, and its fairly cheap as well. but go look at it for motorola you get the only thing close is the mpx220. but its got the windows OS and the not need super 200mhz processor which jacks up the price. uh uh, not my style, then from SE u see the S700, which is well... gona cost too much to even talk about. i really dont get SEs strategy of charging the most ridiculous price on release day then slowly dropping it. many people want to get it on release day but once they see the price theyll start considering other phones. like i paid 730 for my 6230. after soooooooooo long, since i got it on release day, now its at 650. which isnt too bad. only 80 bux difference. imagine if i got the k700 on release day at wat 898? now its at 635! 263bux difference! see what i mean?

the point im trying to make is is that nokia has all areas covered, catering for our needs, price, style, functions, somehow or the other nokia always pull through...

that still doesnt explain why i paid so much for my gx32 instead of getting a 7610 though :P

Shaheen, just one other thing you forgot to mention, Nokia has and probably will always have the most userfriendly and nice-to-look-at GUI.

shaheen
08-27-2004, 05:52 AM
oh yea, gd point, but GUI doesnt really bug me from using other brands, i mean its called adaptation, ive gone from nokia-SE-Siemens-nokia-nokia-sharp and ive not complained once... its easy to get use to it.

Nokia are suffering, how can you tell???

They are the FIRST to drop pricing on handsets that are barely a month old..why?? Because they have "alright" sales of new handsets initially, but then they just stop DEAD!!

Looking at the current market (here in NZ at least) I constantly see new more feature packed and better priced handsets coming out, the retailers see it and so do the consumers.. that and the competitions product is usually much better featured, and not as "samey" as the Nokia product.

As with everyone else this is my opinion but there is a lot of truth in it

:D

Sorry but i really have to disagree with you here.

When Nokia brings out a new phone the prices are usually pretty good as are their sales.
Then after a month or two the prices drop and unlike what you said, their sales rocket sky high!

This is very evident with phones like the 6230 and 6600.

Also the 7610 has had really good sales.

In my opinion i think Nokia will die soon in the Philippines because the majority is using Nokia instead of other brand and so the tendency is Nokia will be out of fashion it will became just an ordinary phone and they already reach its peak. People tend to be unique and different from the others unique but the best. but i dont know for some other country.

does anybody know why? i just watched an american teen movie and they all use Samsung flip phones...(surely, Samsung has sponsored the movie)

anyway, Charlies Angels used a Nokia phone in their 1st movie and SE in their second one. Lara Croft used an SE phone in her 1st movie. The Matrix and the Saint also used Nokia phones. the N7610 was featured in Catwoman. An upcoming movie...Cellular...also uses Nokia phones.

IMO, Nokia isn't doing a good job of it.
7200: The screen only takes up a small proportion of the top half. Could have been bigger.
6260: The screen is Symbian sized now, but the 6260 (closed) is nearly the same size as the 6600 (apparently)
2650: Looks like a toy. Toys and phones don't mix
6170: Again, the screen is a small proportion of the top half.
6255: External antenna? Hell no. External antenna was a thing of the past ...

Jose_R.A.M
09-04-2004, 07:14 AM
if nokia did make a roundy type flip phone, i bet everyone would complain and accuse it and say...hold on ur copying "blah blah"...

oh and the 6260 closed isnt that big, its about 5mm taller than panasonic gd87 and thats quite small.

gd87 Dimensions: 97.5 x 49.0 x 23.0mm.
6260 Dimensions: 102 x 49.0 x 23.0mm.

It would be nicer though if nokia did heed, and copy other manufacturers and make toilet shaped (samsung t100+others panasonic x700, vk etx) flips that everyone loves so much.

Thats all! it aint too big, and it doesnt need a mega pixel camera cos atm, like someones already said its kinda more of a gimmick thing than something useful.

Nokia prob make a nice flip in 2006, cos i think theyre still on the "lets make square phones" frame of mind. I think the reason people get anoyed with nokias design because we all know what theyre capable of but theyre not achieving their high design standars (eg the 8XXX series) No one would care if sagem made ugly phones cos...theyre not as big a company as nokia and they aint been doing it as long.
