ok, i wanna say this for along time already. What's up with the 7xxx, 6xxx, 8xxx, sometimes 5xxx, or 3xxxx. Whats up with it? last time we used to know that 8xxx are expensive classy ones. But i guess Nokia really left me (or themselves) clueless. It just doesn't make sense anymore. 8xxx used to be the highest end but then came the 7610. And if people (or Nokians) said that there is something similiar to those under the same series; then wats the 7200 and 7610 ??? And how out 6xxx series? i just felt that its a total messed up-random-naming thing. OK, something do make sense, 3xxx they're meant to be cheap and easy to use, almost featureless BUT suddenly there came along 3650......
Unlike Moto or SE, Z&V stands for flips or clamshells, C&T stands for candybars.... P for UIQs.... bla bla bla. Can someone answer my call??? And please, justify ur claim.

i really didnt bother thinking about it till you made this post, i mean come on man, do u actually bother to go "hey look that phone starts with a 7XXX which means high end phone category, so it must be good!" no you dont, you immediately look out for specs of the phone whatever model name it is.
frankly speaking i think they got numbers 1-9 on a dartboard and they throw 4 darts and see what they hit.

yea. i saw that thread, i dont bother with like rumours and stuff. i go more for like new specs or designs. reckon there should be a 8910i with a 1.3 mp camera and expandable slot. damn that would be nice. call it the 8999. hey, you never know, that could be the rumour ;)

i just liked the titanium design of the phone, but it lacked functionality, to compete with the moto razor nokia should make a similar phone.

7xxx is the fashion phone range isn't it? But you could easily take the 7610 innards out of that love-it-or-hate-it case and put it into something special like titanium and hey presto.. a new 8xxx series!
This is my take on the Nokia numbers:
1xxx - ultra cheap
2xxx - entry level
3xxx - fun phones
5xxx - tough phones
6xxx - business and general phones
7xxx - fashion phones
8xxx - expensive phones (not always very advanced though!)
9xxx - Communicator series
Most manufacturers do try to stick to a logical sequence, but it doesn't always work.
Siemens is odd - as far as I can tell if there's a "C" in it, it's usually a camera phone. Business phones tend to start with "S" unless it's the SL55/SL65. "A" series are the real cheapies. The number part seems to go up by 5 every six months, so you get the SL55/ST60/CF62/CX65/CX70 in that sort of release sequence.
Sony Ericsson is a bit baffling with all these new letters cropping up. Motorola is *almost* logical but then they break it with a few models. Samsung is fairly straightforward although to be honest half the phones look the same.

issit? all i know was this... the first 5 series is something like a 3 series today. (5110)
the first 6 series.... ok they were quite business. (sort of)
the first 7 series (7110) is a full blown business phone.... nothing fashionable bout it..
the first 8 series are fashion phones.... (hey no one will market one of their own series of products as "expensive phones".... dun u think so?~!..... :D
7XXX series phones are the "experimental" or "fringe" phones. They are basically released to test the market to see if similar concepts would work with more mainstream phones (eg. 3XXX and 6XXX series).

True? Izzit? ..... are u sure? ok, abit sense there. BUT TOTALLY DIDN'T CONVINCE ME. But seeing the examples 7610,7600, 7200, 7110 .... yupe they were all first of its kind.
Think of it like this: the 7700 was no fashion phone :D

Well, on the same principle that SUVs/4WDs are seen as fashionable cars, maybe the Nokia 7700 would have been a bit bling if it ever came out :)

yea, that really makes sense. the 7 series is a test phone. made sense especially when i thought of the 7650

Yup, makes sense. But how about the 7260? Why is that a test phone?

hahaha.... lol :D
like wat i said.... nokia's people are already confused by their namings....
oh ya, 7250 wasn't a test phone issit? it's a complete normal candybar with cam which needn't any tests to prove the market's acceptability cos the market already accepts this greatly when it's launched. GOTCHA SID !!

i believe 7250 was one of the first nokia camera phones that had a radio function. :D so they were testing the combination of camera + radio:D

I was thinking about this, then I realized something...
Does it really matter?
Will the model number deter you from buying a phone?
Nah. I say let them do their business.

Nope, they won't. Why? And why not bother? We're tooo into phones.
First S60 clamshell, and also because of the unconventional keypad layout. Most clamshell users prefer style over functionality.

I never thought in this way, even I thought that the 7xxx class was mainly the fashion catagory. (7610 experimental ?? )

I guess it's testing people if people care if the camera is megapixel or not. If the 7610 wasn't popular at all, then they'd know that they don't need to put megapixel cams anytime again soon. (I guess...). 7650 - I guess testing if one needs a camera, or the Symbian OS. 7210 - testing how the public will react with a not-so-expensive colour phone (I think?...). 7110 - seeing if people need the features like WAP. 7200 - experimenting whether flips are a good idea, or if they should stick with candy bar. 7250 - seeing if the public would buy a phone with a camera. 7700 - people need these sort of media features? 7600 - um, not too sure how this fits into it. Perhaps the keypad layout? (Although if it was, wouldn't they've made the 3650 a 7xxx model?). Maybe it's the WCDMA features? Then why isn't the 6650 a 7xxx model. Haha, i'm confused. Oh well...

hehe... Thats why i think me and shaheen were right. They simply just name them for gods sake. Although it's not a point to say they're not good. But it leaves people clueless.... :D

I think u mayb rite it started out like that, but then researcher 1 day stood up in a board meetin & sed 'HOLY CRAP WERE RUNNIN OUT OF MODEL NUMBERS! WE CANT HAV A 10xxx SERIES THATS JUS PANTYS!'
So after many late nights & takeaways & lots of nokia funding later 'I NO LETS JUS BUNG OUR FUTURE FONES IN TH RANDOM MODEL NUMBER SLOTS WE HAV LEFT, NO-ONE WILL EVA BE GEEKY ENUF 2 WONDER WOT THEY MEAN!' :)

Which makes sense, seeing as smartphones like the 6600, 6620, 6630, are combined with the not-so-smart phone 6610 and 6650.

easy. The 6800 was the first in the series. The 6810 is marginally better than the 6800. Same size and weight, less memory, EDGE. The 6820 is more expensive, smaller, lighter, has everything the 6810 has but got rid of the useless FM radio and added a close to useless camera. :)
The 6810 and 6820 were originally slated to be released around the same time. It just didn't happen as planned. They were announced at the same time though.
Luckily, they all have crappy screens and no external memory so at least they stayed consistant! (I really like my 6800 and 6820 though).

Someone mentioned the Siemens phone classes...
was anyone aware that they are (or used to be) based on the Mercedes classes for their cars?
A, C, S, SL, M
and they all seem to follow a sort of pattern too
A class being the "cheaper" family models
C being the more executive "cheaper" model
S class being the standard classy model
SL being the executive, sleek model
M being the tough off-roader type
Cool, huh?
But now they have the SK, SX, ST, CF, CX, CL, MC and U series...so they seem to be distancing themselves from that now.

6820 is more expensive.....bla bla .... got rid of the FM?? wats this? It sounded like P900 actually is a better unit than P910 but got rid of the useless keyboard?? wats this? it's for sure 6810 is the successor of the 6820.... just that their namings dun suggests so....
