Series 60 / Symbian-os

Can anyone explain the difference between series 60 and symbian-os in clear DETAIL plzzzzz???? im lost :( BTW Im aware one is a platform and the othera operating system.

Well SSYMBIAN is the Operating SYStem itself...... while Series 60 is the User Interface layed over it....... hmmmmmmm

I guess sort of like.... Windows laying over DOS in the early days. Makes it pretty :)
