I just bought the Nokia 7610 and i realized there are Chat and Presence icons, what do those do? i know that Chat is for chating, but when i access it it asks me to enter server information and such, same for presence. Is it possible to enter MSN or AOL server info and access them through Chat?
and yes i have agile messneger :)
thanks!

Chat you know about, Presence is a new fandoo thing Nokia introduced with the 6220 onwards, Its like if you access the person's presence menu. It lists whats the best way he can be contacted. For example, If I am in a meeting I live set my presence to busy and also write in it leave me a sms and I will get back to you. This presence is a univeral platform and is the same for SE devices too. Too bad not many operators support it. More info can be found at http://www.nokia-asia.com click on 6220 and see its interactive demo. :D

i'm not sure what "chat" is... its weird, requires server set up and so on... (on 7610).
as for presence, i think its just like MSN how you can choose status and so on; and its an operator service (not supported in most, if not all places).

Presence is much like the status of a buddy you see when using MSN/AIM/Yahoo messenger. "Busy, lunch, away, etc."
When your network (T-Mobile, Orange, etc) supports the presence features, you will be able to have your contact list show the status of your mobile phone buddies. You could, for example, see that you friend John was "busy", so you would know not to call him. You might see that Frank was in a meeting. That kind of thing.
I don't know of any network that supports this stuff yet, though there are an awful lot of phones that do.

And the chat thing, if its the same kind they've been using since the 3310, is basicaly text messaging between 2 people (prolly more now) but with an IRC style layout, so once you've sent a message it will appear on the screen, then when the other person sends theirs it will appear underneath yours and so on, leaving a big long list of all the chat that has taken place. Good if you text to one person alot of the time (would be cheaper to call at that rate...), but other than that a majorly under-used feature.

michael gave a very clear idea of what a presence is.. but does the other person too needs to have presence feature for him to know whether i am busy, in a meeting, taking bath or whatever???

Yes, both people have to be using the same presence service. Though there are plans for making multiple presences servers on different networks work together, much as you can send a SMS to a friend on another network.
But I wouldn't expect this any time soon.

I'd find it handy, even tho I'm not a 'business user'. If i did'nt want my friends to call or text me, i'd change it to busy, if I WAS in the bath, i'd change it to that (well I dont take it in the bathroom with me for fear of the condensation wrecking the insides) for the time I'm in there because I dont want my phone playing 'Sweet Dreams' by the Eurthymics at full volume everytime someone rings me while I'm in the bath, deafening and annoying everyone else in the house lol

I think its a really good idea.... I would change my profiles more often if it was the case... even with the advanced profile systems in most nokias, i hardly bother with more than three...
I would espeically change it more often if i could program timed changes in my profiles as with some current phones... and have the voicemails, ringtones, and presense change accordingly. One of the coolest upcoming features in mobile phones I think.

It is a good idea.
For example, if I send an SMS to someone, and they don't reply, I get worried about if they got it blah blah blah.
Eventually they text back a few hours later, and explain the late reply because they were in a movie or something.
