i think IMEI is needed for the license?
... as a side note, no mention of 7610 support? can we still test if we only have 7610?
manav

Its not correct to give out IMEI, after getting the software we can do whatever. But IMEI is something which is better not disclosed. I just dont trust him.

DEAR MANEV (AND OTHER WORRIED SOULS)
WE ARE SURPRISED AND PUZZLED BY YOUR DECLARATION TO READERS NOT TO HAND OUT THEIR IMEI CODE.
I HAVE BEEN IN THIS BUSINESS FOR OVER TWO YEARS AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER HEARD ANYONE CRYING 'CAUTION!' OVER AN IMEI NUMBER.
WITHOUT THE HARDWARE OR THE PHONE NUMBER WHAT CONCEIVABLE BENEFIT CAN WE GAIN FROM KNOWING AN IMEI CODE?
THIS IS A GENUINE QUESTION. OBVIOUSLY, WE RESPECT YOUR SINCERITY IN THIS MATTER AND ASSUME THAT FOR YOU TO INTERVENE WITH A BIG BOLD WARNING TO NEW USERS YOU MUST HAVE SOME SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE IN THIS AREA.
SO TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR WARNING IS NOT IGNORANT SCAREMONGERING PLEASE SHARE THIS KNOWLEDGE WITH US.
WHILE WE AWAIT YOUR ANSWER I WOULD SAY TO ALL WHO READ THIS THAT OUR REQUEST HAS A SIMPLE AND GENUINE REASON -
OUR APPLICATION HAS COST US TENS OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS TO DEVELOP - AND LIKE OTHER SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS WE PROTECT IT WITH AN LICENCE CODE. THIS IS BASED ON THE IMEI NUMBER OF THE USERS PHONE.
THIS IS STANDARD PRACTICE. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY OF DOING IT.
FOR EVIDENCE OF THIS SIMPLY GO TO HANDANGO OR ESSELLERATE OR ANY OTHER DOWNLOAD SITE AND YOU WILL SEE THAT EVERY SERIOUS APP IS SOLD ONLY AFTER YOU GIVE THEM YOUR IMEI NUMBER.
AND TO SEE WHY GO TO ANY SYMBIAN USER GROUP ON YAHOO AND WITNESS THE NUMBER OF POSTS ASKING FOR CRACKED LICENCE KEYS OR CODE GENERATORS SO SOMEONE CAN USE AN APP WITHOUT PAYMENT.
THE FACT IS YOU HAVE A SIMPLE CHOICE - PROVIDE AN IMEI NUMBER OR DO WITHOUT APPLICATIONS FOR YOUR PHONE. BECAUSE SURPRISINGLY YOU'LL FIND THAT NO ONE WANTS TO SPEND TWO YEARS WORKING TO DEVELOP A NEW APP AND THEN HAND IT OUT FOR FREE.
IN OUR POST WE HAVE GIVEN OUR WEB SITE ADDRESS AND OUR COMPANY IS REGISTERED IN THE UK WITH INFORMATION ON SHAREHOLDERS AND DIRECTORS. MORE THAN THIS WE CANNOT DO TO ASSURE PEOPLE WE ARE REAL AND GENUINE.
I HOPE THE PEOPLE WHO TAKE YOUR ADVICE DO NOT REGRET IT WHEN OUR APP APPEARS ON HANDANGO FOR 30 EUROS AND THIS OFFER IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE - BUT PERHAPS YOUR ANSWER TO OUR FIRST QUESTION WILL MAKE THEM FEEL THEY DID THE RIGHT THING. WE WILL SEE WHEN YOU REPLY.

Pfft. Your post looks like a big bold warning ... typing out a letter to Manav in public, and all in capitals ...
I wouldn't give out IMEIs either. So Im standing alongside Manav.
And secondly, why no respect for the 7610?

Well, I'm sorry about the text size, that was unintentional - and the result of my inexperience with posting - so I hope you will forgive that.
As to the substance of what was said -
my first impression is that there is still no answer on why an IMEI number is so valuable - or just how it's open to abuse. this is an honest question to which I would really like an answer.
the second point is on our unknown status in relation to Handango.
You are correct - and what you say is fair.
The only problem with it is that while Handango are reputable - they are not the people you give your IMEI code to. You give it to whowever has signed up with Handango - and they run no checks on who that party is. I know because we are registered with them and this will be one of our major sales sites when we launch.
As an observation - it would take you 15 minutes to register with Handango, put an app on their site (yours or a copy of someone elses with a different name - since they don't test them ) and they would begin immediately sending you the IMEI codes of everyone who bought it.
A second observation -
If IMEI codes were valuable in themselves then why don't people sell them? Why is there no illegal trade in them (as with credit card numbers)?
Have you ever seen, read about, heard about a scam where someone was trying to gain access to IMEI codes?
I have programmed IMEI codes into our code generator over the last month for people who have sent them in to us and who are testing our app in the EU, Singapore, Jordan, Egypt, Australia and other countries.
I can tell as a fact that the codes for, say, the 6600 are sequential in a very obvious way. Much, I suppose like car chassis numbers. They are 15 digits long and being predictable are not in any way secret.
The only thing they do is identify a piece of hardware. And so far as I know this is to keep track of manufacturing problems / or to link operator settings to a particular phone.
So, I honestly, genuinely, do not understand what it is that some fiendish scammer could hope to do with them. I would understand it more if we asked for the actual phone number as well. But we don't.
So I return to my first question - what is it that you all know about this that we don't - and please share it with us.
And let me add, I do not want this to become hostile - that is not the point; and I was unaware that my direct answer was in some way a problem, and if it is or was I apologise; I would just like to know if there really is a problem with this IMEI thing other than natural, quite healthy scepticism such as you all feel.

One of the reasons is ... thieves
Thieves steal a phone, and the phone gets barred. They need a new IMEI to use the phone, so they take out the UEM chip and replace it. Using a specific cable and software, they can write a new IMEI. They can either create a random IMEI or find one posted at a forum!!

OK this has gone far enough, I just got a mail from him. He seems ligit. All I did that was because of scammers who useally get out the information they need from newbies. So if our dearest mods are not here we have to protect the newbies. I think nk_au we can give him the imei and also ask for a permenant job as beta testers! ;) and get our names in the credit *evil*. Anyways I am downloading the program and will see what it does, but have to wait for the reg. code to arrive. After reading what all you wrote about handygo. I am writing them a email concerning what all you told us and the privacy of out information. Lets see what happens. Cheers! Manav

It's OK to be skeptical, and I think Manav was justified in what he said. What was not justified, however, was that long letter in all caps.
Eocdotcom should have sorted the issue out with Manav via PM.

Well I installed that app, but when I try to start it it gives a app closed. There are actually 2 icons in the main menu. Namely "call Flash" & "Call Moniter". We were not trying to scare him off, just being considerable and smart-ass. Like we always are :D

Exactly what is the software for?
Toocool
07-11-2004, 08:56 AM
i am not interested in the software now!! I wouldnt mind paying whatever charges and buying the app when its released instead of keeping the beta version (like lifeblog). And moreover this is India.. i get a CD with 1000 java games, 200 symbian games, 1000 polyphnic tones and loads of apps for just 100 rupees (2 usd) pirated of course!! but i dont mind buying it.. so much is available right now on www.bazee.com check it out i gues international delivery is also available. search for java games everything is available! 1 US $ = 50 Rupees!!!

based on my understanding the program is designed so that you can record a voice message and then at a specified time/date it'll ring/call them and playback that message.
.. and as for that IMEI discussion, people usually do give out IMEIs in order to get the codes to unlock software after paying for them.. what i don't get is how the networks know your not bluffing them when you tell them to block an IMEI..

The software is installed but I cannot seem to find the menu from where to record and send messages, the concept is cool. And if this thing can wish people on their birthday then its a really good thing because I'd love to set it @ 3 in the night and make their b'day wish really special and unique, and if I can also combine the audio streams with music that would also be really cool. Anyways hope to get it working soon. I am always openminded to help people out, and he seems to be a nice guy dont worry too much mundets, he just didnt know the forums. Will keep you posted. And have you noticed I am soon going to reach the 1000 mark, yippe!

Ya seriously, I wanna know about the app, not the IMEI hype goin on around here... so tell us about it. I dont get how its so revolutionary... you say you can leave voice messages... well... um I thought that was called voicemail. lol maybe im wrong tho?
And about the IMEI thing... the only harm that could be done is someone rewriting thier phone with your IMEI and registering it with the service provider... then if you ever wanted to it would be marked as stolen and you couldnt. Either way its not just a number you should hand out at anyone who wants it.

That software has nothing to do with voice mail, it was preety cool. I wasted my mate's nights yest. Anyways what you can do is record something in it. Like a birthday and schedule the software to call that person at what evert time/date. It calls them up and wishes them. Thats it. For me it holds much better value I set it to call my friends at 3 in the nights and say. "Baby, you have been had!"
