Anyone know how this works? Will there be extra charges for using this?

Its possible there will be a charge similar to texting, but who knows. Im sure that will be set forth by the carrier... have you tried to inquire about it with yours?

Also -
Even though it was desgiend to be future compatible with the emerging standard (because nokia wants to be the first out with PoC) It will only work with Nokia handsets till then.

Nokia is using a proprietary system that is not compatible with the system designed by Motorola, Siemens, and Sony Ericsson.

As to how it will be priced, who knows. Nobody has actually rolled this out comercially yet that I am aware of.

Telstra in Australia have just launched it at a cost of 1 cent (Australian obviously) per second. You can find out more by googling Telstra and PTT I guess

I remember reading an article about that at imobile.com.au

if you think about it logically.. at 1c per second, isnt it cheaper/easier to use normal vodafone 1c/second anyway?... and PTT requires them to have it enabled, and do they have to pay to receive? *shrugs*

I read things about PTT saying it would be like an walkie talkie... well in a w-t you don't have to pay anything, so if you must pay to use PTT I don't see why should anybody use this.. It's like having a phone with two phones in it...
With PTT you have to pay and hope that somebody else would have a PTT phone also, so you can have conversations like
- Hi there! over
- Great to hear you over

etc...

Can anybody please explain what's the usability of this? Shouldn't the be concerned about developing other areas of the phones?

I loathe PTT. Loathe it.

And I don't mean just using it. I can't stand when anybody is using it. Constant beeps, some strangers voice booming out, people standing there like idiots holding entire converations like that.

Just dial them, moron. Geesh. God help us if the rest of the world follows the US down that stupid path....

The only provider with good push to talk in America is Nextel . I like it because you can have a plan with unlimited push to talk and if all your friends have Nextel you can just use the Ptt rather then calling them . Its saves time also , just push the button and your talking to them right away . I think its a great feature .

Ps - You can also make it where ur convo isnt on speaker phone , so if you hate people always peeping you and you think its too loud then just turn the volume down .

I think the benefit of ptt is that theres no flagfall which many carriers (including vodafone i think?) have, others charge in 30 second blocks and you don't have to wait for the phone to dial and connect to the others phone.

In terms of its benefits over a walkie talkie, you aren't as constrained by distance and interference that you are with a wt, perhaps good for large construction sites with poor line of sight?

I wouldn't want my phone suddenly bursting out a message at school because of this PTT function. I could get my phone confiscated!

I think I'll wait until after university: then either 3G or PTT. Or maybe both? :D

I don't get why anyone would necessarily 'want' a PTT phone.. i mean wouldn't it be cheaper to just use cheapo walkie talkies (i dont' know what the professional/proper title for them are) but i know that they can go great distances, and are free to use!...

And yes I hate people who talk on speakerphone in public places.

The problem isn't me using a Nextel phone with the conversation coming out the speakerphone, it is every other idiot out there using it.
