No one can surely tell you about price drops! I was wondering even though GSM is most popular CDMA/UTMS etc.. phones are also coming out at a steady pace.

Yes, but with CDMA phones you're unable to put a sim card in, hence it would be difficult to change phones because you'll have to change numbers, and all your contacts etc. (I think that's how it works. Never had it before...)

Many people take phones on contracts so they have to keep the same number throughout and the phones are locked anyway. So CDMA isn't a bad option.

Well I'm on contract, but I change my sim to a Philippine pre-paid when I go to the Philippines because it's MUCH MUCH cheaper, wouldn't be able to do that with CDMA! You'd have to spend for the sms and calls made overseas.

Are Philippine prepaid rates cheaper than Singaporean contract rates?

Not always locally, but I would have to pay LOADS if I were to send text, or make calls, overseas. They make it so it's SG$3 (p99) a minute for calls! Ack.

Pre-paid rates can never be lesser then contract rates. (In the same region mind it :D )

Do you mean roaming rates? Globe charges around P50-80, depending on where you go.

I see...um not too sure what roaming rates are. Does that mean you have to pay to get signal in another country? Don't need to do that on Singtel...

Not to get signal, to send/recieve calls/sms.

Oh, well yes I mean that... you mention receiving (spelt with an ei, not an ie, btw:D) sms' - do you have to pay to receive sms overseas?? That would suck...

I tend to useally take a card (prepaid) of the region where I am going, its much cheaper. But useless if you are not going to stay for long.

I just dont get why everyone accross the world doesnt use GSM on 900/1800/1900. Plus those american only phones are so damn ugly!

Im glad that here in africa we get the same stuff as asia and europe cause those brick looking things in the US are just disgusting.

Just have a look at nokia USA website if you dont beleive me.

I'm sure that you'd have to call your carrier to activate your roaming service...
What your carrier does is tell the carrier of the place you're going to roam to that you're going to roam in their coverage area, so that the carrier of the place you're roaing in knows that you're roaming there, therefore allowing you to use their network. (did that make sense?)

USA phones ugly? Wow...that's something I haven't heard before. I always thought they looked pretty good...the Moto V300 look good, and so do the V600. My 3650 looks great, and that new Siemens phone that we just got looks great too...

Hey. Yea, knew that. Um, I find that random, but I havn't reread this. Thanks for typing it up for me though! It's like when I go to the Philippines I get a text from Singtel saying: "Thank you for using Singtel Roaming. We hope you enjoy your stay in Manila. The temperature is....the currency difference is..." etc :). And then I get an SMS from Globe or Smart saying "welcome to the Philippines etc.". Then I delete the messages and curse them for taking up my memory, and then get my Philippine sim card and insert it! :D:D.

Ah... So your roaming service is automatic!
Gah, I envy you. :(

Globe doesn't have it... You need to call them 24 hours prior to your departure.
I discovered this on a recent trip to Beijing. I was at the Manila Airport, and remembered that I had to activate my roaming. So I called CS and asked to activate my roaming. Well, well...they said that I had to phone in 24 hours prior!!!! Gah...
So I was in Beijing WITHOUT any cellphone service. It was BAD. Very bad...

BTW, sorry for the randomness! :P I just pick out random posts in threads to read :P

Those arent USA only phones, everyone else gets those phones as well. Im referring to phones for the Americas only (850/1800/1900), they are so damn ugly, just check out manufactures websites for 850Mhz phones!
