If anyone could help me out I would be most grateful

The Nokia 5140 is released in July and the recent handsets announced by Nokia feature Push To Talk (PTT)

I am wondering whether this is going to the next big thing so do I wait a few more months until phones have this feature or do i go out now and buy the Nokia 6230 or 7610?

It sounds like a useful advancement in technology but if not many current phones use it then it seems i should go and buy a phone without it and wait a year or more until all new phones have it built in.

I may have misunderstood the review Michael gave for the Nokia 6170 but he states

"Earlier this week, Nokia introduced a new clamshell Push-To-Talk (PTT) handset, the 6170. PTT offers "walkie-talkie" type functionality whereas the user presses a button to connect directly to the other party in a series of one-way voice communications back and forth. People in the US that have used Nextel's service will be quite familiar with the technology. This version of PTT is proprietary to Nokia and will not function with the other GPRS PTT standard pushed by Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and Siemens."

so I can't use PTT when contacting someone who does not have a nokia PTT?

Therefore it seems to me I should wait a while before getting a PTT phone.

Any help or suggestions would be of a great help as I am finally going to upgrade from my terrible Sony J70!

Thank you

If PTT is definitely needed then I would recommend you wait till the end of the year. The PTT standards have not yet been ratified and a PTT phone you buy today may not be compatible with a future version.

And no, you can't use PTT with someone whose phone doesn't have the PTT functionality.

Nor can you use a PTT phone with another PTT phone if the standards used arent compatible... as with Nokia developing their own standard - pana, samsung and others are using a single standard. And in the US. Nextel has their own.... so either way. you are better off waiting until the good word comes.

I find PTT useless to the average citizen. It's basically a long-range walkie-talkie type thing that you have to pay for. It's most useful to government people (police, for example) where they use walkie-talkie things the most.
But for people like us, normal calls are fine.

Alot of the Nextel plans in the US have PTT with a bundled 5000 minutes or 0.01 a click. Its not like SMS where you send tons out to people you know?.... good for quick voice messages for people in your PTT Group lists. Basically like a V-IM.

I suppose that is true.
Here in the Philippines a lot of people use their Nextels to communicate with their drivers to have them pick them up or whatever, or check in with their maids at home to see how dinner is coming along :)
My parents don't want it though- they feel that their beloved cellphones are good enough for that purpose!

I think PTT is going to come in a big way inspite of being a half duplex mode of voice communication....it might not have gained momentum as of yet but it sure will in the future...it might probably turn out to be more popular than text messages...and hey text messages too took time to be as popular as it is today....when it comes to such technologies the growth initially might be slow but if you look at statistics of sms then you'll get to know that the growth is exponential once the awareness sets in....anyways if you guys want to know more about PTT then click on the link Im providing below...
