View Full Version : Got my 7610 and here is my review

i had been waiting for the 7610 for a very long time
but i should say the first time i say the phone on nokia.com, i hated the phone for some unknown reason. i was like an anti-7610
but as time passed by i fell in love with phone
believe me, the 7610 is worth the wait
when i got my 7610 i felt like i was on top of the world. i got the black and brown 7610 and is quite good looking. i put in the sim card and there was the beautiful view of the 7610
1.the 7610 feels quite solid. the keypad does not shake as in the 6230 and there are no gaps between the keys
2.the keypad is a bit hard and sometimes you may have a problem pressing the left directional button as you may instead press the ok button as they are quite close. otherwise no keypad problem
3.the system is faster than my 6600. adding, deleting files does not take long.
4.camera : the camera is just too good. high quality pics take a little time to save (by little time i mean some 1 sec extra) . but after clicking if you move the camera, the pics dont move. the quality of the pics is just awesome. even when you zoom the pics, the pics are not pixelated.
5.the video camera captures videos at a viewable quality. the videos are not bad as in 6600 and 3660
6.when i transferred some pics from my 6230 and 6600 to my 7610, the pics looked much much better on screen.
7.the camera also works well in dim light
8.the mp3 player is ofcourse mono. but when mp3s are player through the loudspeaker of the phone, they are quite loud and can be easily heard
CONCLUSION :
PROS : 1.great camera
2.good video recording
3.great screen
4.fast OS system
CONS : 1.rs-mmc cards (as they are not yet available in the market)
2.mono mp3 player
OVERALL I WOULD GIVE THIS PHONE 4 OUT OF 5

How can you listen to MP3s? Through a 3.5mm headphone jack or does it HAVE to be through the pop port like the 6230?

i think its through the pop-port connector...

... interestingly enough, thats how i end up with most of the things i have. when 8310 first came out in magazines (not for sale yet) i said "pfft who would pay $700 for a phone with a radio", and when it launched, i got one (my uncle gave it to me 'coz i asked for it).. then i saw 3650 and said "what an ugly keypad.. who would want that piece of..." and then again i got that (off my uncle).. and yes i'm aware i never put my money where my mouth is; but i'm proud of the phones i have. and then xbox, i said 'why would i want a microsoft games console' and i have one now; and lastly.. i said 7250i looked crap and was just a normal phone with a camera (compared to the 3650) but thats my current phone.
... just thought i'd add that so ur not the only one who ends up liking stuff u initially hate.

Just wondering, seeing that the Nokia 7610 has a Pop Port ...
There is a Nokia HS-2R which is a Radio headset and connects through a Pop-Port. Can it connect through the 7610 Pop-Port?
I think it was designed for the Series 40 Pop-Port. Does it pose a difference?

I wanted to know if that "Nokia Radio Headset HS-2R" thing is compatible too...
I searched on google with that radio headset and in one of the websites it listed the 7610 being compatible with it...but im not so sure...
I'll probably stick with my sony md to play music...its small, light, and in stereo (depending on earpiece oc)
I cant wait till july...when all the exams are over and THE 7610 IS OUT!(IN CPW)http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-comingsoon-Main

Can MP3's be used as a standard ringtone?
Does it sound much better than the 6600 or is it on par?

There is no 2Gb memory card out at the moment, they haven't mastered the technology for 1Gb yet, I suspect you meant 2Gbit which is, of course, 256Mb.
The RS-MMCs have been released, I've been able to get hold of them for a little over a month now (from 32mb to 256mb), fortunately, they're not much more expensive than regular ones (10-20% more) and the Kingmax ones come with an adaptor too.
Not that I'm ever going to get a 7610 (I say ever, I mean in the next month or two ;) ), but where is the speaker vent on it? The 6600's speaker was a total joke and was quiet. The 6230 has a acoustic vent like the N-Gage and is loud and clear. I'm also wondering, is the sound 44.1kHz or 16kHz like all the other non-hardware MP3 Symbian phones? The only real way to find out is to plug some headphones in, then you can clearly hear what the quality is. 6230 sounds great anyway, and I know you can't compare it and yes, I do miss Symbian a lot.

I heard that the 850 band version of the 7610 isnt going to be available in America until somewhere around late July or early August.

He was probably talking about MMC and not RS-MMC, the largest MMC is now 4 GB.

Hi rohan,
thanx for the review. From where did u buy the 7610 and at what price? Also, you mentioned that the mp3's are played in mono output, but if I am not mistaken, a pop-port connector gives stereo output if one uses pop-port headsets.

No, this would be the first one to have mono output, Pop-port is nothing to do with it, there was extensive talk of the mono/stereo capabilities of the 7610.
There are no 4Gb MMCs out, 1Gb I think is the most commercially available, and it's very expensive and very rare. 4Gb is only a technical launch - no-one actually has one or can buy one.

yes it is much faster than the 6600 when starting the cam and new message. may be the same speed as the 7650 . i wont say as fast as 6230 as series 60 phones are slower than s40 phones
Good to hear, but obviously its no GX20/30 right? In terms of picutre quality
picture quality is not as great as gx30. but it is between good and great.
When playing them back, can you acutually hear what is being said and not muffled like how it was on the 6600?
sound during video recording can be heard. i dont say that it can be heard very clearly but it is understandable what is being said.
it is surely better than 6600

WTF??!!!
If you put it in the "Sounds>Digital Sounds" folder, does it work? As you would with a wav file for the 6600? Or can you only use wav files/amr/mid files for the ringtones?
Thanks for this, i appreciate it alot, i want all the information i can get about this phone so i can decide whether to get it or not when it comes out here in australia.
Geez nokia au suck! Nobody has a release date at all for this phone gRRRRRRR

No! You know it doesn't work, if it did Nokia always announce it on their website and 'phone features' section. And the reason? Because the phone has no dedicated MP3 decoder (hence no stereo as well), so it can't handle MP3 ringtones (I suspect the phone's CPU is under a lot of pressure when phone calls come in, decrypting MP3 is hardly its top priority).
It just seems people aren't prepared to believe this simple fact, though that said, there's plenty of space on the phone - nothing to stop you using WAV files (but I'd put money on it the audio engine won't sample anything above 16kHz).

But in their article, it says 1Gb is the biggest one on the market to date, and I haven't even seen those yet. It's called a paper-launch, they may have samples but that's it. And that's not a photo, it's a CG-mockup.
It's the same in the computer market with the NVidia's GeForce 6 product line, they had samples they sent to reviewers but consumers can't get hold of them yet.

No, I understand your point, but it's going to be well-priced out of our league for sometime and it's going to be a while before they are commercially available.

I never said i wasn't prepared to believe this fact, yes i know that it doesn't have stereo sound and yes i know now it doesn't have mp3 ringtones, but i was asking rohan because he's got the phone already and the 7610 supports mp3's so i assumed that there would be some way of making them ringtones.
RS-MMC should be widely available soon as RS-MMC and MMC have identical pinouts and people who have 7610's have forced MMC's into the RS-MMC slot and it works...

Hi there, I'd just like to ask a few Q's.
1. How's the menu speed is also faster than the 66? Have you tried installing programs on it now? Im just wondering - maybe the phone is fast coz it's not yet full or near 60 percent full... maybe when there's apps, graphics, and other stuff on it already - maybe that's the time to see if the phone really is fast?

CONS : 1.rs-mmc cards (as they are not yet available in the market)

2. Is it true that you cannot send Midi files (ringtones) thru MMS?
3. Is it true that it doesn't have a modem? That you cannot use it, connected with a PDA/Laptop/PC, as a modem to access the net? You're on dial-up, right? Can you use your phone to dial up your ISP?
4. If mp3 ringtones are not supported, what about wav and amr files? Can they be used as ringtones?
Thanks for any info...

Can't you just convert MP3s to WAV? The only problem is the lower sample rate of WAVs on non-hardware MP3 phones but then again, it's only a ringtone, it's good enough.

I tend to convert any MP3 I have to Truetones (*.awb files) and set them as ringtones. You could do that as well, but WAV is better
I don't use MP3 as ringtones when I had the N-Gage. I still liked a few MIDIs that were my good favourites ...

its just the ease of transfering them. i just cant see why they cant put the remainding technology of the 6230 combine with the 6600 and it should = 7610. But it doesnt ahhhhh my head hurts no0w. crazy nokia.

Hi... I got my 7610 and I was able to use my mp3s as ringtone. I was playing them in the gallery and when I stopped the file and click options there was an option to set as ringtone. so i now have an mp3 as a ringtone.

yes got to put them in the right folders for mp3 to be used as ringtones, the digital folder for tones
then u will be able to see them with the list of tones available for selection when u set ringtones
my tots on the phone:
- great screen, almost like an LCD, brilliant color
- camera used as viewfinder, excellent, pics are of very good quality (nice depth, color, great nite mode etc) and nice on PC and phone screen
- keypad is not difficult to use at all, though the joystick is a bit stiff
- series 60 is stable, lag is much reduced over 6600 and 3650
- tones are very loud and crisp, mp3/aac files can be used as ringtones
- video recording is ok, just some slight dithering
- playback of aac/mp3 files through loudspeaker is amazing, no pitchy noise when volume raised unlike 7600
- mono playback through a 2-sided earpiece (6610/7250 type or 7600/7200 fashion headset) is, well, mono but actually wasnt as bad as i imagined it to be, just a lack of bass and hollowness... if u can live wif that, doesnt make a bad mp3/aac player though it makes more sense to make tis stereo and my best bet is nokia will come out with a stereo enhancement earpiece/device that will allow stereo output
ok, my 1st tots

hey you are right.... mp3s can be used as ringtones.
ipodee
the stereo headset cannot be connected to the 7610
when you cannot a stereo headset, the phone will say 'enhancement not supported'

i still don't get it when people say the phone hasn't got a modem.. didn't the previos s60 phones have it built in? and i thought its the drivers on the computer which matter (ie. u need the modem driver from nokia website usually)..? anyone able to shed light on the topic please?.. this is purely for interests sake, i wouldn't ever use my phone as a modem.. except maybe for my Palm but since there's no IR and my palm has no Bluetooth, i don't see it as a possibility anyhow.

I guess it does work :D

If you put it in the "Sounds>Digital Sounds" folder, does it work? As you would with a wav file for the 6600? Or can you only use wav files/amr/mid files for the ringtones?

Ok, point proven, I was wrong... :p
It was just the number of people who said it wasn't possible I figured it was about time someone listened to them (especially after people who actually have the phone said it wasn't possible). Well, I guess it's good news then.

If you put an MP3 on a 6600 in there it won't work...
My reasoning was that it never said MP3 ringtones on the Nokia website, which it almost always does (if it supports them).

Any1 can tell me the name of the series 60 program that allows you to designate any item to be included in the Go-To screen rather than being restricted to the few in the fone?
