I'm pretty excited, too... the place I buy my phones from is overnighting mine to me today... normally I don't put much stock in posts saying "mine is on the way," but I've purchased more than a couple just-released phones from this retailer and they've never been a day late.

Andrew, who is this retailed, and PLEASE give us your thoughts when you get it.

I've had really good experiences ordering through no-air-time.com... (don't worry, this ain't an ad of any kind). It's a pretty small operation, and they aren't automated like many ordering systems... so I'll often call to check that it's going to ship (like I called this morning). But when I get them on the line, they're really good about expediting things.

I have no idea how they get things so quickly. I keep on top of who's selling what pretty much daily, and I can't figure out why the other places can't offer things until about a month later. It would be nice if they did - would give us a little price-war to help get us the best deal :)

Thanks, man. If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it?

I am selling my Moto V600, and would really like a high end phone that can do more than my SE T616, which is all I'm left with.

I've put off selling my last few phones, so I need to sell 3 or so :)

I paid $690. Expensive, surely, but competitive for right now. I typically move through phones too quickly to experience any price drop in the market value :)

Anyone know where the press release is for this?

My friend (in Aus) claims that one of his guys had the phone in end of March (in UK) but I saw it only just started shipping. Need the link to prove him wrong.

I put a pic of me and my phone at http://bravehound.com/Andy_phone.jpg - another example of the image quality.

I'll post my impressions on a new thread, in case people feel like reading the critique of a big nerd like me.

I was gonna say that would be amazingly fast. I'm definitely curious about the reception, BT implementation, stability, etc, etc. More than anything, how weird is it to use/dial on.

Take your time with the write up, but definitely post the link when you have it.

Well, I'm satisfied with the picture quality. It is much better than the 3650, both in terms of color and clarity. I can't wait for mine to arrive!

- how fast is the menu? is it just as slow as the 6600 or as responsive as the 6230, 7650?

- how's the sound for mp3s?

- is it possible to add .mid's to an mms or have they still implemented the DRM ?

AndrewSMcD

I've experienced the menu being faster than the 6600 - I can't speak about the other two... I'm guessing this is due to more onboard memory (default storage for most things appear to be MMC).

The sound for mp3's isn't great for the loudspeaker... but tolerable as a ring tone. My phone plays Pass the Dutch. :) I've ordered a pop-port stereo headset (10 bucks). Even if the mp3s aren't stereo... if they're loud and I can store 45 min of mp3s for the gym, that's all I've ever used my mp3 player for.

Doesn't look like I'm able to MMS midi files.

Much faster or just by a little?

Is it better than the 6600 though? (via the loudspeaker that is) You wouldn't happen to have heard an mp3 on a 6230 have u? If so, how does it compare?

I can't image really using any phone speaker to listen to MP3s. Anyhow, I'd mark the speaker playing back from an MP3 on the 7610 to be maybe a bit better than the .wav playback on the 6600... the mp3 playback on the 6600 (using 3rd party app) was a complete nightmare and I quickly discarded thinking of doing that.

I haven't heard the 6230 at all. But I'm sure it's a better choice as an mp3 player, that can't be contested. But to guage what I hear, I'd say the V600's playback of mp3s is tons better than the 7610 or any other nokia loudspeaker ... that I've heard.

I've noticed the menu being quite a bit faster... where I couldn't use a big skin on the 6600 without slowing it down, the 7610 doesn't seem to hesitate beyond what's I feel is normal. Faster than the 6600/3650/3660 for sure.

I'll write something up later next week, after I get to use it a bit in Florida :)

hi there, ....... um, just like to ask, does it have a modem? Have you tried connecting it to a PC and use it as a modem to connect to the net?

also, comparing to the 6600.... does the 7610 store pictures with larger file sizes than in a 6600? Could you maybe take a picture of the same subject, set at "high", then compare the file size?

thanks for any info.

I'd take a good guess and say that since the 7610 has a larger pixel count in the photos, its gonna have a larger file size :p As for the modem, take a look at http://forums.mobileburn.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3382&perpage=15&pagenumber=2

To quote ipodee from that thread "hmm the phone has a modem as stated in the comparison chart and online tutorial on nokia 7610's support page on nokia.com"

hey andrew, i heard that with the stereo pop-port you will only hear the left side, it might not be worth the 10 bucks, better opt for the mono headset...

Its wierd that Nokia produce a pop port stereo head set when as far as i know pop port dosn't support stereo at the minute.

Thanks for the info. That fact can be a good or bad thing - depending on how you look at it. If your purpose is to take better and larger photos - then it's good. But if your reason is to take photos then send them thru MMS - then it could become a problem especially if your gsm provider has a file size limitation on their MMS service.

There was one time I converted a BMP into a 125 x 125 wallpaper for my 7250. It was successful - but when I tried to send the same graphic tp another phone, a message popped up saying that it's "5KB over the maximum allowable file size that can be sent".

just my 2 cents.

I suppose it all depends if the 7610 uses the same compression method as the 6600 for sending MMS. The MMS image file size and resolution for both phones might be the page. It may be thats its only when you get up to high quality and use the 7610s full resolution that the file size will be larger that the 6600s high quality photos. I'm sure somebody here knows the official answer.

ummm..... in comparing the 7610 and 6600, the comparison chart only states that the 7610 is 3.2kb slower than the 6600. But I think that it refers to the phone's gprs speeds.

I take that to mean that the phone itself is the one accessing the net - and that is its speed.

It doesn't exactly say that the phone can be used a modem. (like when connected to a PC or PDA or Laptop).

.... but let's wait for a user review about this, I could be wrong here.
