View Full Version : Thieves?

Is it true that IF thieves stole my Nokia 5210 they could easily make it work again if I report it stolen and get it blocked, just because all DCT3 phones are easily unblocked simply using a cable and software?!
I've been told that if my Nokia 8310 was stolen it would be harder for them (hardware has to be changed), because it is a DCT4?
I'm quite WORRIED that if it's this easy, then maybe I should sell my Nokia 5210 and buy one of the latest Nokia colour phones.
I don't want to be an easy target. What do you guys think?
Dude, a 5210 is pretty cheap. Just be careful with your phone, use some commonsense, and you'll be fine.
But yes, I'm pretty sure they can do that.

whats the point of selling your 5210 which you wont get fook all for and spending at least £100 on a brand new phone, just so thieves cant use it ! why dont you just wait until it gets stolen first love!!

Thanks. I was more curious than worried actually, but I thought I'd maybe get a quicker response that way, and it seems I did! By the way, I found a way to upgrade my Nokia 3310 to 3315 (or 3310+), so I'd get features like Auto Keylock, etc.
I think I have to use a 'flasher' cable to do this, but I tried using my M/FBUS Data Cable anyway to see if I could use that, and it didn't work. Am I right in assuming I need to buy a seperate 'flasher/flashing' cable?
Thanks guys.

They may make only £5-£10 by selling a stolen phone, but they're more likely to steal it if they KNOW someone who can unblock it easily will pay money for it.

However, it's the messages/numbers that are saved on my phones that matter the most really. Maybe I'd put them off in one way, but attract the more desperate ones by getting a more expensive phone.
Thanks for the replies anywayz.

If a thief wants to steal my phone, I wanna make it as hard as I can for them to UNBLOCK my phone. I didn't wanna ask a complicated question, so I phrased it in a way people would understand.
ALL that I wanted to know was if it's harder to UNBLOCK a DCT4 phone.
Yes I think it is harder, so I'd rather have a DCT4, to make it harder for any ba*tard thief to UNBLOCK my phone if I was unfortunate enough to be mugged!
Now I probably sound like a nutter! But at least I've explained myself.
Thank you.

If your phone is stolen then phone up your operator with your IMEI number and it will be perminatly blocked in the UK on all networks.
This however doesn't stop the theif from either 1) illegally re-programming the IMEI, or 2) shipping the phone abroad.
But to most average theives it would stop them.
Visit the following website for more information.

^Huh?
It's Actually Possible to reprogram the IMEI???

Yes, it is possible to change an IMEI number.
Some phones are harder than others, but I *think* it is possible with all phones. I have heard that some of the new phones (possibly those offered by Nokia) have the IMEI coded into the ROM, therefore making it very very hard to change.
If you want to know some more about phone crime, check this site (http://www.immobilise.com). It is a UK specific phone crime site. (edited: just realised this site has already been posted) )
By the way, in the UK it is illegal to change an IMEI number. It is also illegal to steal someones phone........
IMHO, its only a piece of plastic. If some scum of the earth wants it, give it to them... its not worth being harmed, or worse, over.

I think this is what seven was getting at with DCT4 being harder to reprogram. DCT3 nokias hold the IMEI on EPROM which can be reprogrammed whereas some of the newer DCT4 use 'write once' chips meaning in order to change the IMEI you would physically have to replace the chip with a blank one and then reprogram it.
But at the end of the day if someone is gonna pinch your phone I don't think they are gonna ask whether its DCT3 or 4.

Especially when there is a huge overseas markets for mobile phones.
Once the UK system of blocking stolen phones to the rest of the world (which isn't going to happen for some time) then phone crime will reduce much more.

Yes, that's what I was trying to ask basically, thank you.

I think the Nokia 8310 (DCT4) and 3510/3510i (DCT3) are exceptions though. Am I right?
So a thief would know that she/he will find it easier/cheaper to UNBLOCK a 'black & white' phone.
Don't underestimate thieves. 'Scum', as Mpressive calls them, are not always dim. A good thief is a smart thief. Thanks for all the input guys. Appreciate it.

Yup, you're right. Like the Nokia Communicators which are actually closer to being DCT3, than DCT4.
