Some interesting questions about the universe:
1) How big is the universe?
2) What happens when you get to the end of the universe?
3) What is nothing?
4) Is nothing something?

Everyone! Post away and discuss! :P

All those questions can be answered in this months issue of popular science. Also - some interesting facts about the universe can be read at CNN.

Good luck.

Answers:

1) Infinitve, never ending
2) Well you cant
3) It depends on what you define nothing as. If you refer to a Vaccum such as in space, where there is "nothing" then it is where no atoms are present. Sound cannot travel through a vaccum as it works by vibration and if its got nothing to vibrate then well you get no sound! Light though can travel through a vaccum as the wave is of transverse nature, and does not rely on pulses and rarefactions such as the longitudinal wave of sound. Yet if you define nothing as an empty bottle then you are wrong as it is not infact empty, but FULL of air, i.e contains molecules/atoms.
4) I wonder, it will be an interesting topic. :)

2) You die :(
3) Nothing = phile nullset i dont know how to put its symbol here
4) Yep it symbolises how much cash i have ;)

1)the universe is so big that you cannot use any measurement of distance to define it.
2)well, who knows? ;)
3)Nothing is a word :D
4)It is, because 'nothing' is something because its something!

Some people say the universe is expanding, and when it becomes too big, it'll collapse in on itself.

Another undiscovered thread by comme .... sad~~

My replies:

Yes, the universe is still expanding.
The universe did have a starting point, it does not already exists infinitely. WHY? If it does, all star's lights have already reached earth, and the night would be clearly as bright as day light.

e=mc2 is something like Energy=MassX(speed of light)2

The universe has it's ends. But that 'End' is an intertwined unimaginable twist of different dimensions, time and spacetime. The end of the universe or the border of the universe might be just next to earth sometimes, and in other times, its very far.
Imagine u have a straw, with very flexible textures, and u insert one end into another, then it starts to continue inserting itself, continously, unstoppable; given the unstopable assumption, this never stops. Therefore if u are someone who's very very very tiny travelling within the texture of that straw, you'll have an unlimited amount of spacetime to travel, therefore you see no end, because the end is on another dimension. The dimension where it is outside of the straw's texture. The universe seems to be expanding because the unstopable of the straw's inserting of its either ends makes more spacetime for you to travel within.

Therefore, provided we reached the intellectual level of understanding how and what is the texture of the universe's walls, do we have a chance to create or imagine something to go through it. Worm holes might suggest a possibility. :) But i dont think for the time being, anyone is capable of thinking thru it. The intellectual level i mentioned can be described as this:

Why do some people, cannot imagine the amount of 1,000,000 ? And why someone cannot even imagine or visualize 100,000? Yet some people can felt the presence of 1,000,000,000. My explanation is the different capacity of our brain's understanding or intellectual level. Try holding a red pen, turn it in circles with ur hand slowly, for instance, 3 circles per second, then 5. Ok, visualize this scenario with ur brain and create an imaginative scene of the pen actually doing circles. 3, 5 rounds then proceed adding the speed of the pen turning 10 circles in one second, that is about where we all normal people couldn't visualize the actual pen circling but we could only comfort ourselves with a streak of red color turning in circles. The more clever or powerful one's brain is, the higher number of circles he/she is able to visualize. That explains the limit or our brain's capacity to imagine the limit of our universe, and what is out there beyond the perveive walls of the universe. :)

Nothing. Refers to what you are refering at. If it were orange juice, empty the bottle and there's nothing. If it were air, vacumn the bottle and there's nothing. One thing couldn't be defined as nothing is space. Because even if u retracted all air within the bottle and it is currently vacumn, there's still space within it.

Yes, nothing's something. :)

wats the string theory. ??
Me physics? :D i failed physics and maths badly at school. But you'll wonder why when you get to know how schools over here in Malaysia taught physics or maths. They don't explain, they just say "This is the theory, memorize it for tests." This is how idiotic teachers taught students over here. They suck.

we complain to teachers when they do that. If we dont like the teacher we er...(get them sacked - or replaced)..do something bout it.

Buts only a few though. We got some really good ones who would come in over the holidays to teach you, give you tips on revision, do after school lessons etc...theyre normal teaching methods are excellent. the class dont move forward till we understand things.

we got some pretty good teachers, but w also got some pretty bad ones... the ones who are bad say that they listen to us students and to what we want, but then do it their own way, which usually suck.

we've only had 2 really bad ones which we complained about....

Other student problems non educational, eg food in canteen, state of common room are controlled by senior prefects (moi) and school council members (moi)

we've made loads of improvements in the school, but theres still a whooole load of other things to do.

in the ninth grade we got new teachers in a lot of subjects, since the old ones quit or got time off or something. our Swedish teacher was the teacher of history, religion geography and social sciences for another class (before high school those are parts of one subject). the other class hated her (so did we), so they stopped going to her classes. after a while the school changed their teacher.
avout food in our canteen: we get worse food then alot of other schools, because the one who rent the canteen is a big company, Sodexho. so naturally they're more intersted in getting profit, ergo our food sucks. it's probably not even that good for you. it's still free though, so no worries.

String theory is the theory that there's something smaller than atoms that makes up the universe. Now, there's even smaller strings that make up subatomic particles, and it's the way these strings vibrate is what determines what substance they make up. This theory was discovered in order to put together the theory of general relativity with quantum mechanics...basically combining laws of the big with the laws of the small. It can be proven mathematically, but it can't be provent through experimentation, and thus is sort of discredited as it can't be proven through the scientific method...

Everyone! Post away and discuss! :P

ive never actually answered this have i?

1. the universe is as big or as little as you make it.

2. there is no end to the universe, its just a loop and when you get to what you think its the end you're actually at the beginning (according to theory u cant get to the end of the universe, but its all theory - not fact)

3. nothing - is the answer to the question "what is more powerful than god, more evil than the devil, the rich need it, the poor have lots of it and if you eat it you die.

4. anything is anything in philosophical terms.
