View Full Version : Modifying the Pop-port connector for better sound

Right, I'd like to start this thread because I know it's a bit of a let-down that the 6230 (and other phones i.e. 3300 with MP3, and all the other DCT4s with radio) don't allow use of 'normal' headphones and I would like to consolidate all the information available on the Pop-port outputs and the HDS-2 headset (which is what is supplied and will end up being modified).
Basically the sound through these headphones isn't up to much and I'm sure the phone is capable of a lot more given the right equipment.
Anyway I've attached a pic of the bits I dismantled and the relevant information I managed to extract (I'll get the pinouts on the Pop-port when I get access to my voltmeter at home).
What bothers me is that the headphones have left and right channels (which is normal) but they don't share a common ground (but rather have separate positive and negative connections) and I don't want to short the phone/headset out (and destroy the phone) by wiring the left and right negatives to a common ground like it would be on a 3.5mm headphones. A 3.5mm jack appears to have 3 connectors, a common ground and left and right channels.
Any help and comments appreciated - I really want to use my Sony MDR-G63 headphones (which have a headband thing so they don't fall out). This will put the 6230 up there with the phone greats if we can get it to work (cos the N-Gage sounds amazing with it's adaptor and my own headphones).
EDIT - sorry, I had to rotate the picture 90 degrees to fit in with the 800 x 550 dimensions requirements, so either put your monitor on it's side or download the pic and rotate it back!

this is a thread that might help you, it's from Howardforums and is good... very much information about modding pop-port

Excellent, that's perfect! And it answers all my questions including the pin-outs of the Pop-port and the wiring.
Like I thought, there is a common ground pin on the Pop-port headset, so you wire the same common ground on the 3.5mm socket to the -ve on both L and R channels and then use the +ve rails to link to the left and right channels respectively. Well, at least I now know I won't short the thing out.
Cheers :D
EDIT - I would like to add that their threads started, like, last month only and it was first mentioned back in December 2003 when I got my friends some 3300s. It's a shame cos it would've been cool to be one of the first to do it, not that I had any compulsive need to back then (now I have a 6230 I do). But once again, many thanks for that link.

someone actually said that you could connect a normal earphone by chopping off the original nokia headset earphones and attaching, say, a sony earphones by soldering....

Yeah, I remember that one too but I want a 3.5mm jack so I don't damage my headphones, they were quite expensive.
Hold on.
What are we trying to do? Chop off the end of a 3.5mm jack and attach a pop-port connection? Is there anyway I can change my 6600's 2.5mm jack into a 3.5mm one. Or should I rather say a standard 3.5mm into a 2.5 jack that will fit into my 6600?

Yes, that is the plan and with luck, I'll have mine done and working tonight.
You can do this to a 6600 but to be fair, it's not worth it. The audio quality is appalling. Anyway you need a 4-pole 2.5mm jack (i.e. the same as the one on the HDD-1 stereo headset, i.e. the one supplied with the 8310). Just hook this up and you're sorted. The N-Gage dongle doesn't work, sound is routed through but the phone rejects it after about 10 seconds.

I think its no use connection a good headphone to the 6600 as the audio quality is lacking.

did anyone notice that if you try inserting stereo pop-port headset from phones sucha s 7250i and 6610 that it fails to work? 7610 warns me that the attachment is not compatible.
Oh
Thanks for all the help.
So its not worth forking out for a HDD-1 then! Good thing I saw this, as I was about to get one!!:D

But there is a mono dual-earpiece headset going around, I was unfortunate to get one (for my 6230) - wonder if that would work or not. I bet the sample rate on the 7610 is similar to the 6600 so it's probably not worth it anyway...

Ok, I'll say it. What about taking a risk on something like this? I've been wanting a stereo bluetooth headset since what seems like the late 70's. Has anyone heard about this company's product?

Looks like they aren't selling JUST the headphones at this point, but rather a whole set up... check it out, though... they could be very cool.
My big question.. is whether the Nokia 7610 (or any other phones) will work with this. Tech support states.. "The Audio Player can be used to stream audio if the mobile phone supports A2DP(advanced audio distribution profile). This should be checked from Nokia. "
Looks like the link for sample info is down... was working a few days ago...
Thoughts?

A2DP is not yet available to any nokia phone, not even sure if there is any BT phone that supports it... and ive heard that the "stereo sound profile" or whatever they will call to be used for the stereo BT headsets is not yet fully defined that was bout 2 mon. ago, not sure if it is available now... i say hold ur horses when it comes to stereo BT headsets, its just too early...

"does anyone know of any mod that will allow a dual-mono headset/headphones to be used with the N7610???"
Yes its technically possible you can but its not easy first you need a pop-port to 2.5mm then a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter then convert all your mp3s and films to mono and sound should reach you in both of your ears.
I havent tried all of this i have the pop port adapter and can confirm that this is compatable with the nokia 7610 but i cant fit the 2.5mm headset (it doesnt go in completely) into so im not sure if its correct  . Ill do an edit if i get it working

You simply have to pull the mono sound channel and route it to both channels, by connecting left and right on a 3.5mm jack to the 7610's output channel (mono).
This method you mention would work but is overly complex and if you can solder things then you could do it this way far simpler and cheaper.
