The Nokia N-Gage is a convergence device, not unlike Web-TV, which was introduced in the late 90's. A convergence device is the marrying of two separate technologies – in this case: a gaming platform and a cell phone. For the first time, users can have a Symbian OS handset and a gaming device blended into one. Sure, there are cellular devices that can play games, but none purpose-built to do so. Where does it succeed? Where does it fail? I had a chance to use the N-Gage for a week and I will try to answer those questions in the following pages.

I hope Fox TV does not sue me for using their slogan..

Looking forward to an update of the review once all the features are up and running and more games are available for your test.

It could be.. I don't have another to test so I cannot say for sure. I wish I could retest with newer firmware! Mine was from the July timeframe. The BT might have been ironed out.

I have a question about the Real One player:
what kind of videoclips can you play with it? Can you only watch special (streaming) videos or can you load your own videoclips on your mmcard? If yes, do you have to recode the clips with PC suite?

I've downloaded Nokia Multimedia Converter and I recoded a 44mb Simpsons episode to a 11mb .3gp videoclip. The quality of the videoclip isn't very bad, but not very good either. But I don't have an N-gage to test wether the phone can play the movie or not.

Looks like this handset is going to die a quick death. They only sold 500 units (out of 6000 shops!) in the UK last week!
Sold 14,000 units of Gameboy in the same timeframe....with no promotions or game releases.....

yeah, just hold on to your current celphone, especially if it is a sony-ericsson, then just buy a gameboy advance sp for less than $100! ;)

I don't like it... I used it for a bit, and it seems really rushed.

It's just a mix between a couple different phones, the 3300 and 3650, with a video card (basically).

The overall design is just plain horrible.

I think something like the T-Mobile hip-top (or whatever it's called) with a d-pad and seperat action (A and B) buttons. I don't like how they are integrated into the dial pad. Also by having the display flip up (or rotate like the hip top) it would free up a lot of real estate on the face of the phone, thus allowing the better keypad layout and a larger display.
